How Frank Martin helped K-State baseball

As he searched for ways to explain how his team ended the season on a hot streak and played its way into the NCAA Tournament as a No. 3 seed today, Kansas State baseball coach Brad Hill told a story about Frank Martin.

Two weeks ago, he invited the Wildcats basketball coach to speak to his players. A must-win series with Kansas was coming up, and K-State was in need of some advice.

But the description he gave of Martin’s speech at the Big 12 Tournament in Oklahoma City wasn’t totally accurate. While it made for an entertaining story, he never asked Martin to use his trademark demeanor and stare to scare his team.

“That was actually a joke,” Hill said.

In reality, he was very mellow.

With history on their side, Bat Cats have little reason to fear No. 1 Texas

The Texas baseball team sure has a lot going for it right now. Let us count the ways:

The Longhorns are the No. 1 ranked squad in the country. They boast an overall record of 39-7. At 19-2 in Big 12 play, they stand one win away from locking up a regular season conference title. They have the best pitching staff in the nation. They are on a 21-game winning streak.

Whew, that’s a long list. Some might call it intimidating.

But Kansas State fans shouldn’t. Lately, some of their best memories have come while the Longhorns were at their best. Just think back to Jan. 18, which was the last time a Texas squad had so much going for it. On that day, the Texas basketball team took a 17-0 record and No. 1 ranking to Bramlage Coliseum.

Behind the (then) highly touted trio of Avery Bradley, Damion James and Dexter Pittman, Texas appeared rock solid. But the Wildcats handed it a 71-62 defeat on national TV. All of a sudden K-State had the nation’s respect, and it went on to make the Elite eight.

Samuels boosts twitter popularity at K-State

More and more Kansas State athletes are beginning to join twitter. Jamar Samuels (or as some of you know him @JamSam32) may be the reason why.

During his recent down time in between games, the Wildcats’ outspoken sixth man has set up a twitter account for teammate Jacob Pullen (@Jpullz0) and convinced freshman Nick Russell (@NickRussell12) to join the social networking site as well.

All three have been active with their tweets, and have given their followers including myself (@KellisRobinett), some entertaining moments.

From Pullen’s twitter this morning: “In class bored … How did anybody on ‘Saved by the Bell’ graduate but never had class?”

From Russell’s twitter: “Just finished my criminal justice exam, lil homie killed it! Now in study table … Get at me!”

From Samuel’s twitter: “Just woke up slept like a baby. Time to get ready for this game 2marow.”
