This week’s player to watch: Missouri senior wide receiver Danario Alexander

Danario Alexander

Missouri wide receiver Danario Alexander is putting up big numbers in his senior season — All-American type numbers.

The Marlin, Texas native comes into tomorrow’s game against Kansas State with 71 receptions and 1,038 yards to his name. Those statistics each rank fifth nationally.

Last time out, in a loss to Baylor, he caught 13 passes for an astounding 214 yards and a touchdown. He is Blaine Gabbert’s favorite target, and the Wildcats will need to figure out a way to slow him down.

Snyder enters Coach of the Year race

He’s been a strong candidate for Big 12 Coach of the Year all season, but now that Bill Snyder has Kansas State one win away from bowl eligibility and possibly a North division title, he’s beginning to be mentioned in the national race as well.

In his first season back, at the age of 70, he has led a K-State squad comprised of 12 first-year starters to a 5-2 record in its last seven games and a 4-2 mark in conference play. Compared to the beginning of the season, when the Wildcats struggled to beat UMass and lost to Louisiana-Lafayette, it is a remarkable turnaround.

There are lots of other wonderful candidates out there (we’ll get to them in a second) and climbing to the No. 1 spot in the country will be difficult. But he is in the conversation, and that is impressive.

Postgame: K-State 89, Pitt. State 53

Earlier in the week, Frank Martin said he didn’t consider Syracuse losing to Division II Le Moyne as a meaningless loss.

Even though it was labeled as an exhibition game, the Orange still sold tickets and tried to win. The loss may not have done anything to their record, but it was real and so was all the talk about it on ESPN the next day.

Maybe he brought that up to his players on Sunday. Maybe he didn’t. But Kansas State easily avoided the same outcome, and pounded Pittsburg State 89-53 in its exhibition opener at Bramlage Coliseum.

After the first media timeout, the game was horribly lopsided and Martin got to experiment with different lineups. The results were overall good.

Postgame: K-State 17, KU 10

Kansas State’s 17-10 victory over Kansas on Saturday goes to show just how far good coaching combined with a strong running game can take a team.

Daniel Thomas ran over, around and through the Jayhawks for 185 yards and a touchdown. K-State’s defense tightened up every time Kansas threatened to score and allowed 10 points. Grant Gregory made no major errors.

Just like that, the Governor’s Cup returned to Manhattan.

Live Blog: K-State 17, KU 10

FINAL
It’s a done deal. The fans are still in their seats SCREAMING the K-S-UUUUU Wildcats cheer.

Good win for the Wildcats. They run out the clock and win 17-10 to stay on top of the Big 12 North standings.

3:07 4th Quarter
Kansas is beginning to call timeouts in an attempt to save clock.

K-State can end the game with a series of good runs here.

5:20 4th Quarter
Kansas just made its first field goal of the game and has pulled to within 17-10.

The drive ate up all kinds of clock and ended with a 46-yard field goal.

Kansas State will get the ball back after the ensuing kickoff. A touchdown return from Brandon Banks would be perfect for the Wildcats right now. But a handful of first down runs by Daniel Thomas would do the trick too.

Gameday Preview: KU at K-State

The Sunflower Showdown is always a big game, but today’s battle between Kansas and Kansas State goes way beyond bragging rights.

If the Wildcats win they will further increase their lead atop the Big 12 North standings and be in terrific shape to go on and win the division.

If the Jayhawks win they will become bowl eligible and get back into the conversation for a North title.

Both teams have only a few games remaining, and anything is possible. But it will be awfully hard for either of these squads to get to where they want to be without first picking up a win in Manhattan.

For K-State, the number is 7

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about Kansas State’s bowl hopes this week. Here is one of them: Could K-State get a bowl bid with six wins?

The answer: No, at this point the Wildcats need seven wins to become bowl eligible.

This week’s player to watch: senior defensive end Jeffrey Fitzgerald

Jeffrey Fitzgerald

Ever since Jeffrey Fitzgerald accepted coach Bill Snyder’s mid-season challenge and became one of Kansas State’s vocal leaders, the Wildcats have looked completely different on the defensive line.

Up front, K-State is now able to rush the quarterback and force turnovers on a consistent basis. In its last two home games, K-State recorded 10 sacks and forced 10 turnovers.

Fitzgerald alone has five sacks against conference opponents this season and one interception return for a touchdown. Continuing that type of play will be key against Kansas.

Postgame: Oklahoma 42, K-State 30

Before Saturday’s game at Oklahoma, Kansas State coach Bill Snyder joked that he wanted to appeal the NCAA and start this contest in the second quarter.

Had he gone through with the plan and somehow had that idea approved, the Wildcats would have left Norman with an impressive victory.

Instead, they were outscored by 21 points in the first quarter and lost 42-30. The first-quarter onslaught was nothing new for Oklahoma. Coming into the day, the Sooners had outscored their opponents 58-0 in the first quarter.

Live Blog: OU 42, K-State 30

FINAL
Kansas State made things closer than many expected in Norman tonight, but couldn’t quite pull out the win.

The Wildcats fell to the Sooners 42-30, and can point to a 21-0 deficit at the end of the first quarter as the reason why. From that point on, K-State outplayed Oklahoma and looked like the better team.

Daniel Thomas played through a sore shoulder and 129 yards of total offense to go along with a rushing touchdown. Grant Gregory threw for 174 yards. Brandon Banks cuahg nine passes for 156 yards and also returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown.

Landry Jones, though, threw for 294 yards and four touchdowns. Three of them came in the first quarter. Check back later for a full report.
