Kansas State basketball breaks into Top 25

Kansas State has climbed into the Top 25.

The Wildcats, who are on a nine-game winning streak after beating Oklahoma State 74-71 in their conference opener Saturday, are ranked No. 25 in the latest Associated Press poll, which was released on Monday.

K-State (11-3, 1-0) started the season slowly by losing three of its first five games to unranked opponents, including Northern Colorado and Charlotte, but it has been on a tear since December began. During its current winning streak it has knocked off Mississippi, Gonzaga, George Washington and Oklahoma State.

It first started picking up votes last week following an upset over Gonzaga in Wichita. Wins over George Washington (receiving votes) and Oklahoma State (now ranked 11th) was enough to push it into the national polls.

The Wildcats are one of five Big 12 teams in the AP poll. Baylor is No. 7, Iowa State is No. 9 and Kansas is No. 18. Wichita State is No. 6.

K-State hasn’t been ranked since the conclusion of the 2012-13 season. It will face TCU on the road Tuesday in its first game as a ranked team.
