The Royal sampler: Snyder-McCarney, Jeff Carroll update, Predictions, Links

1983 Iowa coaching staff: -Back row: Bill Snyder, Del Miller, Kirk Ferentz, Hayden Fry, Carl Jackson, Don Patterson, Bell Dervrich Front row: Bernie Wyatt, Barry Alvarez, Bill Brashier, Dan McCarney, Bob Stoops

Here’s my story that’s at Kansas.com and in Friday’s Eagle on the 30-plus year relationship between Kansas State coach Bill Snyder and North Texas coach Dan McCarney, who first met as Iowa assistants in 1979. McCarney, in his second season with the Mean Green, brings his team to Manhattan on Saturday for a 6 p.m. kickoff – the game will be televised on FSN. The story link also has a full scouting report for the game.

There’s a lot of mutual respect there between Snyder and McCarney – fostered in the ultra-competitive environment that Hayden Fry established when he came from North Texas State.

Jeff Carroll recruiting update

I was in contact with Kansas State men’s basketball recruit Jeff Carroll on Friday morning. Carroll, a 6-foot-6 forward from Rowlett, Texas, took his official visit to K-State a couple of weeks ago and said he is going to pick a school in October. He told me he’s not on an official visit this weekend and that he was “very happy” for Dallas Mustangs AAU teammate Marcus Foster, who committed to the Wildcats on Tuesday. Carroll is also considering Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and TCU.

Predictions

Winners in bold

Louisiana-Lafayette at Oklahoma State: Oklahoma State Mike Gundy was upset with how his team played in a blowout loss at Arizona last week. Louisiana-Lafayette couldn’t have picked a worse time to visit Stillwater.

No. 16 TCU at Kansas: Horned Frogs get their first chance to make a statement in Big 12 and face a KU team coming off a disheartening loss to Rice. TCU will roll.

James Madison vs. No. 9 West Virginia: They get to play this one at FedEx Field but it’s a no-brainer pick. Will be surreal to see Big 12 teams in Morgantown this fall.

Sam Houston State at Baylor: Sam Houston State is one of the best teams in I-AA (yeah, I still call it that) but they’re gonna get smoked here.

New Mexico at Texas Tech: New Mexico is still smarting from a 49-0 beatdown from Texas last week.

Western Illinois at Iowa State: This doesn’t present much of a challenge for the Cyclones, who have been very impressive in their first two games.

No. 14 Texas at Mississippi: Time for the college-football world to get to know Ole Miss QB Bo Wallace.

North Texas at No. 15 Kansas State: If K-State’s passing game seems off early, the Cats won’t waste time trying to tinker with it and will switch to a steady diet of run plays for Collin Klein and John Hubert that the Mean Green have no answer for. An invigorated K-State front seven, fresh off a five-sack performance against Miami, will tee off on North Texas QB Thompson if he is indecisive in the pocket. KSU 50, UNT 14
