The Royal Sampler: Denton 2010, Foster commits, KSU volleyball, Links

Denton, 2010

Kansas State last played North Texas on Nov. 27, 2010 – the final game at Fouts Field in Denton before the Mean Green moved across the interstate to $78 million Apogee Stadium. Here’s Kellis Robinett’s article from the Wildcats’ 49-41 shootout victory, a game notable for Daniel Thomas running for 269 yards and two touchdowns.

Several current Wildcats played key roles in that game – safety Ty Zimmerman had one interception, wide receiver Chris Harper scored a touchdown on a 7-yard pass from Carson Coffman and Anthony Cantele handled all seven kickoffs for K-State. Collin Klein had five carries for 31 yards in the win, but Coffman got most of the snaps that day.

North Texas played that game under interim coach Mike Canales but also at the same time several media outlets began to report the Mean Green had hired then-Florida assistant Dan McCarney. The school introduced McCarney as the new coach three days later.

North Texas went 5-7 in 2011 and are 1-1 after a 41-14 season-opening loss to LSU and a 34-7 win over Texas Southern on Saturday.

Foster commits

Hirschi (Texas) High senior guard Marcus Foster committed to Kansas State on Tuesday via text message. I spoke with Foster later in the day and the first thing he said was that he “felt a lot of love” over his visit last weekend and decided to commit in Coach Bruce Weber’s office on Saturday night. Foster had a visit scheduled this weekend for Creighton. Foster has earned a reputation as a tough defender and when asked what K-State fans could expect when they finally see him in purple the first and only thing he mentioned was defense. That’s pretty impressive for a high-school kid.

KSU volleyball

The Kansas State volleyball team is off to its best start in school history at 9-0 – they don’t play again until Thursday at the Hurricane Invitational in Tulsa, where they’ll face Tulsa on Thursday, Minnesota on Friday and Dayton on Saturday. Junior Lilla Porubek leads the Wildcats with 100 kills.

-Former Kansas QB Brock Berglund may be their quarterback of the future at North Texas – here’s the Denton Record-Chronicle’s Brett Vito on the Mean Green’s QB situation.

-Klein was named Big 12 offensive player of the week after his performance in Saturday’s 52-13 win over Miami.

-ESPN’s David Ubben singled out K-State defensive end Adam Davis for his performance against Miami – he also singled them out for this Globetrotter-esque trick play that failed against Miami. The play was mocked considerably – I can’t get in that boat. Probably because I’ve seen a play similar to that work before, on my small-college beat.

-K-State’s game against Oklahoma on Sept. 22 will be nationally televised – 6:50 p.m. on Fox. To the delight of many K-State fans, Gus Johnson will be on the call.

-Thomas, who now plays for the Miami Dolphins, suffered a concussion in Sunday’s 30-10 loss to Houston.

-Finally, the newest video from The K-State Mask – “Miami Postgame Inspiration

“He runs…like it’s his last day on earth . He runs … like somebody stole his cookies. And he’s trying to get them back.”
