A look at where K-State football ranks

Depending on the preseason college football magazine you prefer to read, you could find Kansas State picked to be one of the best teams in the nation this season or a team struggling to break into the Top 25.

No one, it seemed, could agree on how good the Wildcats are going to be coming off a 10-3 campaign that landed them in the Cotton Bowl.

Then both the major Top 25 polls were released, and everyone suddenly was in agreement. The coaches ranked K-State at No. 21. The media ranked K-State at No. 22.

Now that all the notable preseason polls have been released, let’s take a look back at where K-State landed.

Starting from lowest (best) to highest (worst):

6. Sporting News
10. Billingsley
16. Sports Illustrated
19. Massey
20. ESPN
21. USA Today/Coaches
22. Associated Press, Lindy’s
27. Athlon
37. Phil Steele

The two things that stick out to me in those rankings are (as you could probably guess) Sporting News and Phil Steele. The Sporting News ranked K-State sixth. That’s five spots better than anyone who votes in the AP poll ranked K-State. Phil Steele ranked K-State 37th. Only seven of the 60 voters in the AP poll left K-State outside of their top 25.

In other words, those are the two extremes.

Put all those rankings together, and here is K-State’s average: 20.
