Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim apparently isn’t a fan of Reggie Miller.
Miller, who works as a basketball commentator with TruTV, said something Boeheim didn’t like during the Orange’s win over UNC Asheville on Thursday. So as he sat down for a news conference today at the NCAA Tournament, he insulted Miller before taking any questions. Here is how it went down:
Boeheim: “I just wanted to tell Reggie that we do not play man-to-man defense, just in case you didn’t realize that.”
Miller: “I do know that.”
Boeheim: “It reminded me, if I never went to an NBA game, you missed your first two jumpers.”
Miller: “That would never happen.”
Boeheim: “But if it did, me saying, ‘Why didn’t that guy just drive?’ Oh, because he can’t.”
Miller, a former NBA all-star and one of the best three-point shooters to ever play the game, seemed to take Boeheim’s jab in good spirits. But it was a very odd exchange.
In order to prepare for Syracuse and its physical front line, Kansas State turned to Darren Kent for help.
The former Wildcats player and current graduate student manager threw on some shorts and participated in practice today.
Jamar Samuels was glad to go against him.
“Darrent Kent is one of the most physical guys I’ve ever met in my life,” Samuels said. “It’s crazy. He wasn’t like that my freshman year. But ever since he stopped playing basketball he has picked up a lot of weight and he is strong as hell.”
Kent played with K-State until 2009 and goes by the nickname “White Tiger.” He came back to K-State this season as a member of Frank Martin’s coaching staff. Kent was kind enough to talk about his current role with the Wildcats with us. Here are a few highlights of the conversation.
How did you end up back at K-State?
I just hounded Frank Martin. I called him a lot. I knew there was going to be an opening when Lamont (Evans) got hired. I knew I wanted to come back and be a part of it. I’m comfortable with all the coaches. They’re the same coaches who coached me. We run the same system I played in. I thought it would be the best fit for me to come back and get my start as a coach. Fortunately he had a spot. It’s worked out.

K-State’s win over Southern Mississippi yesterday wasn’t pretty, but it got the job done. We got to see two really physical teams slug it out and luckily for the Wildcats, they had the best player on the floor in Rodney McGruder, who went for 30 points and was nails on defense all day. Right after K-State’s win, the nation got to see one of the more controversial calls of the season when No. 1 seed Syracuse barely knocked off No. 16 UNC-Asheville. I had a great look at the play and I still can’t believe Ed Corbitt missed the call as bad as he did – I never think it’s OK for the press to go after refs, but in this case the national chief of officials said it was the wrong call. So there you go.
We’ve got media availability later this afternoon with Syracuse and K-State and the teams have closed practices at the CONSOL Energy Center here in Pittsburgh. Saturday’s game is an 11:15 a.m. start and will be televised on CBS.
Kellis Robinett, Jaime Green and myself were grinding again yesterday:
