Florida added to K-State basketball schedule

For anyone that wanted Florida to take down BYU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season, you’re about to see what could have been.

Well, kind of, anyway.

Had the Gators defeated BYU in overtime at the Ford Center, they would have been the ones playing Kansas State in an entertaining second-round matchup instead of the Cougars. While nothing can be done to recreate that game, we will soon see the next best thing. The Wildcats have added Florida to two of its future nonconference schedules.

Fitzgerald, Banks sign free-agent contracts

Two former Kansas State football players signed free-agent contracts with NFL teams today.

Jeffrey Fitzgerald, a defensive lineman who led the Wildcats with seven sacks last season, signed with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Brandon Banks, a wide receiver/return specialist, landed with the Washington Redskins.

Both were standout players for the Wildcats, but neither heard their name called in last month’s NFL Draft. Nonetheless, they will each now have the chance to make a professional roster.

With history on their side, Bat Cats have little reason to fear No. 1 Texas

The Texas baseball team sure has a lot going for it right now. Let us count the ways:

The Longhorns are the No. 1 ranked squad in the country. They boast an overall record of 39-7. At 19-2 in Big 12 play, they stand one win away from locking up a regular season conference title. They have the best pitching staff in the nation. They are on a 21-game winning streak.

Whew, that’s a long list. Some might call it intimidating.

But Kansas State fans shouldn’t. Lately, some of their best memories have come while the Longhorns were at their best. Just think back to Jan. 18, which was the last time a Texas squad had so much going for it. On that day, the Texas basketball team took a 17-0 record and No. 1 ranking to Bramlage Coliseum.

Behind the (then) highly touted trio of Avery Bradley, Damion James and Dexter Pittman, Texas appeared rock solid. But the Wildcats handed it a 71-62 defeat on national TV. All of a sudden K-State had the nation’s respect, and it went on to make the Elite eight.

K-State goes old school with UTSA series

Bill Snyder wants Kansas State’s future nonconference schedules to look like its old ones.

Of this, he has made no secret.

He wants to play beatable (preferably very beatable) opponents, he wants to play them at home and he wants to parlay that combination into a bowl trip.

Such a strategy may no longer be possible for the Wildcats on a yearly basis — what with the price of guarantee games soaring higher than $1 million, and all — but K-State certainly turned back the clock on its football schedule today by announcing a future three-game series with Texas-San Antonio.
