Arrowhead is where K-State wants to be

Kansas_City_Arrowhead_Stadium

Before the Kansas State football team traveled to Los Angeles to take on UCLA in the Rose Bowl, a hot topic of conversation was how excited the Wildcats were about playing in such a historic stadium.

Just about everyone on the roster admitted they were very much looking forward to the trip. But their words were nothing compared to what they had to say about playing in Arrowhead Stadium this week.

Everyone is thrilled about it.

“I’m very excited,” senior offensive lineman Nick Stringer said. “I’ve been to quite a few football games there growing up. I’ve always dreamed about playing in that stadium. To be able to play there with this team is something really special.”

Banks named Big 12 Player of the Week

Brandon Banks

After what he did against Tennessee Tech (taking two kickoff returns of more than 90 yards to the end zone and catching three passes for 90 yards) Brandon Banks seemed like the obvious choice for Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week.

And the obvious choice won.

Today, the Big 12 honored Banks with its top weekly award. It is the second time he has won the accolade.

Postgame: K-State 49, Tenn. Tech 7

When a win comes as easily as Kansas State’s 49-7 rampage over Tennessee Tech did on Saturday at Snyder Family Stadium, there are inevitably two ways to look at it.

You can walk away heavily impressed by the Wildcats’ big victory. Or you can walk away laughing at the poor play of the Golden Eagles.

But seeing as how Kansas State scored more points than it had all season in this game — and it did so with top playmakers Daniel Thomas, Brandon Banks and Carson Coffman watching from the bench for the final 25 minutes of the second half — the Wildcats did more than enough to deserve praise.

Gameday Preview: Tenn. Tech at K-State

Everybody needs that easy game. That one afternoon when every pass seems to be completed and each routine tackle looks like a colossal hit.

The Kansas State football team is hoping that game comes today against Tennessee Tech.

After dropping back-to-back road games and struggling on offense for three straight weeks, the Wildcats certainly need a pick-me up. This is their final nonconference game, and Iowa State (one of the Big 12’s most beatable teams) is up next. Going into that match up with lots of confidence would do wonders for K-State.

Will Kansas State overlook Tennessee Tech? Don’t make Bill Snyder laugh

Tennessee Tech is coming off a 17-7 loss to Eastern Kentucky and will be a heavy underdog this weekend when it travels to Manhattan to take on Kansas State.

With that in mind, K-State coach Bill Snyder was asked this week how he would keep his team motivated against the second Football Championship Subdivision team to come to town this season. You know, how will he get his players to take the next opponent seriously?

The question made Snyder laugh.

When he was done chuckling, here’s the complete text of what he said: “I asked our football team the other day, last night in fact, how could you possibly … what would make any of us believe that we’re in a position to take any game that we play for granted? What have we done to allow us to do that. In my mind that would be nonsensical.”

K-State grad named interim NCAA President

Until a permanent replacement can be found for the late Myles Brand, a Kansas State grad will be in charge of the NCAA.

James L. Isch, an Army veteran who earned his undergraduate degree from Kansas State and his master’s from Boston University, was named NCAA interim president on Tuesday. Isch also holds a doctor of philosophy from Kansas State.

Despite poor stats, Snyder likes O-Line

The Kansas State football team was the victim of six sacks against UCLA, but coach Bill Snyder is trying to ignore that number.

At least when discussing the play of his offensive line, anyway.

Even though six sacks looks really bad, and no team can win while consistently being sacked that often, he pointed out today that the Wildcats’ offensive line is improving.

Postgame: UCLA 23, K-State 9

PASADENA, Calif. — The shovel pass was working, the Wildcats were moving and for a while the Kansas State football team threw a real scare into UCLA at the Rose Bowl.

But even with K-State’s offense going up and down the field better than it had all season, and its defense playing fairly strong too, it wasn’t enough to grab a road victory.

Kansas State marched into UCLA territory all night long, but was able to capitalize on only two of those good situations. UCLA won 23-9, and thanks to a 51-yard touchdown stroll from Terrence Austin in the final 7 minutes the score didn’t end up looking all that close.

Live Blog: K-State 9, UCLA 23

UCLA 23, K-State 9; Final
PASADENA, Calif. — That will do it here from the Rose Bowl. UCLA just picked off a Coffman pass and is running out the clock.

Check back later for a postgame report.

UCLA 23, K-State 9; 1:30 4th
PASADENA, Calif. — Kansas State hung tough with UCLA for most of the game, but it looks like the Bruins are going to move to 3-0.

The Bruins have shut down the Wildcats’ offense ever since that nice 80-yard drive in the third quarter and have scored 10 points of their own.

Gameday Preview: K-State at UCLA

Rose Bowl

PASADENA, Calif. — For the first time this season, the Kansas State Wildcats are underdogs.

Going up against UCLA (a 2-0 team that just won at Tennessee) in the Rose Bowl (one of the most picturesque and famous stadiums in America) the Vegas odds makers are predicting K-State to lose by about two touchdowns.

I doubt that matters to anyone on the Wildcats’ roster. They were favorites last week at Louisiana-Lafayette and that didn’t work out so well for them. Their goal this week is to simply put that out of their minds, ignore a large baby-blue clad crowd and try to stay focused all the way through the game, which doesn’t start until 9:15 tonight.

That means they will likely be taking snaps after midnight, and that will be a new experience.
