This will get you ready for gameday

There is a definite chill in the air and people everywhere are talking about the return of football this Saturday.

If you’re having trouble waiting till then (like you should) give this sweet K-State football video a look. Pretty solid appetizer.

Snyder knows who his starting QB is

The rest of us will just have to wait until tomorrow to find out who he picked.

During the Big 12 coaches teleconference this morning, the Kansas State football coach said he has made his choice between Carson Coffman and Grant Gregory. He’s just waiting to spread the news.

“We have a decision,” Snyder said. “We’ll announce it tomorrow.”

Catching up with … AD John Currie

During my first tour of the Kansas State athletic offices yesterday, I got the chance to talk at length with the Wildcats’ new top dog John Currie.

We had a nice conversation and you can read about most of what he told me in today’s Eagle or Star. But there were some interesting notes I couldn’t squeeze into the print edition, like how long he expects Bill Snyder to coach this time around.

The answer: “He’ll be around as long as he wants to be.”

An interesting first week at the new job

Editor’s note: Kellis Robinett began covering Kansas State sports for The Eagle last Saturday.

By Kellis Robinett

Getting started on a newspaper sports beat usually means meeting many new people and getting immersed in an athletics program in a short amount of time.

This week, my first as The Eagle’s Kansas State beat writer, has been no different. I’ve met with a lot of K-State athletic officials and coaches as I get ready for the fall sports seasons.

And yet it has been different, mostly because of a blog I used to write for on occasion.

For a five-month period ending in May, I contributed to a blog called “The Jayhawk Lounge” because I thought it would be a good way to stay in touch with some old acquaintances and write about a common interest.

At the time, I was employed by the Idaho State Journal and spent my days covering Idaho State athletics, writing columns about the local sports scene and maintaining my own personal blog on the newspaper’s Web site.

My work for the Journal was well read and I enjoyed the experience, but few outside the region were interested in reading about Idaho sports. My roots are in the Midwest, and when a half-dozen people I knew from college asked me to help them write about Kansas, I figured why not?

I considered myself a fan and watched most of the Jayhawks games in my free time anyway, so occasionally writing about them as well didn’t sound too bad.

I can’t recall how many entries I made on the blog, but I did not make all of them. I created the site’s domain name, but other than that it was a group effort. In its lifespan, it received approximately 6,000 page views.

By the time May rolled around, I was living in Nebraska and writing for the Omaha World-Herald on a freelance basis. I had intended to keep writing for the blog and even linked to it in my farewell column at the Journal. But after the move I didn’t have time to do it anymore. So I stopped.

The other authors on the blog seemed to lose their passion for the project at about the same time and the site became dormant.

The blog remained online without updates through August and was taken down shortly after I was hired by The Eagle and The Star.

My editors repeatedly asked questions about the blog during the interview process. Could I stay objective while covering the Kansas State beat? Could I give up being a fan of the University of Kansas? Would I put in the extra effort to gain the trust of my new readers?

Yes, yes and yes.

My ties to KU and my brief time writing for a fan blog will have no effect on my coverage of Kansas State.

My goal is to cover the Wildcats to the best of my ability and do so fairly. It is what our readers deserve and it is what I will give them.

As you could expect, Michael Beasley is dominating the conversation in K-State circles today.

Yahoo! Sports first reported yesterday that the former Kansas State star checked into a rehab facility, and ever since columnists everywhere have speculated on whether he would have been better off staying in Manhattan past his freshman year.

Bob Lutz of the Wichita Eagle had this to say about it.

Yahoo! Sports: Beasley in rehab center

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, former Kansas State basketball star Michael Beasley has checked into a rehab center in Houston.

You can read the story here. He says several sources told him that Beasley, now with the Miami Heat, will stay in the facility “for a minimum of 30 days with little outside contact.”

In the Big 12, K-State is Quarterback U

Steve Grogan

The Altoona Mirror recently published an incredibly well researched story about what college programs have pumped out the most starting quarterbacks in the NFL, and according to that research Kansas State is tops in the Big 12.

Thanks to the professional play of Steve Grogan (pictured above with the Patriots), Lynn Dickey, Dennis Morrison and Dan Manucci, the Wildcats can easily claim the title of Quarterback U in their conference.

Combined, Kansas State alums have started nearly 250 games in the NFL. No other Big 12 team can say their past players started even 200.

That’s a pretty wide margin. And with Josh Freeman joining the Tampa Bay Bucs, that margin may grow wider.

Links for Lunch

A decent amount of media came out to Manhattan yesterday for Kansas State’s Fan Appreciation Day practice. That means there are a decent amount of links to devour for lunch today.

Hope you’re hungry …

Fan Appreciation Day Recap

I’m not going to pretend that I know everything there is to know about Kansas State’s football team after watching Saturday’s laid back Fan Appreciation Day practice. We talkin’ bout practice, after all.

But I did walk away with a few observations.

So let’s just jump into them. In no particular order …

– Brandon Banks is one of the best short wide receivers I’ve ever seen. Heck, he’s one of the best receivers I’ve ever seen. During an hour of boring practice time, he wowed spectators on several occasions. In passing drills he caught two surefire touchdown passes and he also took a kickoff return to the house. Not that it needs to be said (he’s been good for a long time now) but Banks is going to be fun to watch this year.

Links for lunch

Before too long, I’ll be heading over to Manhattan to check out the Kansas State football team at Fan Appreciation day.

Until then, why don’t I introduce you to a regular post of mine I call “Links for Lunch.” Every time there are interesting articles or blogs talking about Kansas State or the Wildcats’ upcoming opponents, I will link to them in this space.

On occassion, I may post them at odd times. So you could end up with Links for Breakfast or Links for Dinner. But for now, they’re Links for Lunch.

And on to the links …
