Student tickets for OU available

From the Kansas State sports information department:

Approximately 500 tickets unclaimed from the student allotment will be released Friday morning to the public for Kansas State’s men’s basketball game against No. 6 Oklahoma on Saturday.

Tickets are priced at $20 each and will go on sale beginning at 9 a.m., Friday at the Athletics Ticket Office in Bramlage Coliseum.  Orders will also be accepted by phone at 1-800-221-CATS or locally 532-7606.  The tickets are for general admission seating in Sections 21-25 of the arena.

All other tickets for the game have been sold.  Tipoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

As a reminder, tickets still remain for the women’s Big 12 opener against arch-rival Kansas, which is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday.  There is a Wildcat Weekend game-day special, which permits the purchase of a general admission ticket for $3 with proof of a men’s basketball ticket.  Advance tickets are available for chairback seats priced at $12, reserved bench at $9 and general admission at $8.

Bryce Brown update

Looks like Saturday at Kansas State just got a little more interesting.

It’s the Big 12 opener against No. 6 Oklahoma for the men’s basketball team, and there will be a notable visitor in attendance at Bramlage Coliseum — East running back Bryce Brown.

Brown, who was recently named the U.S. Army Player of the Year and earned co-MVP honors in the 2009 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, will take an unofficial visit to Manhattan and meet with members of the K-State coaching staff, according to his adviser, Brian Butler.

Brown, who will be joined by father and Butler, has orally committed to Miami, but said last week in San Antonio that he was down to the Hurricanes and Oregon.

Now, Butler says a “few more schools” are involved, including K-State.

“It’s all business,” Butler said. “Things change. Why not take a look around? He’s the No. 1 player in the country. There’s no rush… Look at Terrelle Pryor last year with Ohio State.”

Asked if that meant Brown might not sign a letter of intent on Feb. 4 and take his time with a decision, Butler said, “That’s a possibility.”

Scheelhaase: “Rock solid” to Illinois

Now that Josh Freeman is gone, Kansas State coach Bill Snyder is looking for a quarterback — his quarterback — to guide the Wildcats’ offense.

Based on history, we know Snyder is fond of athletic and mobile quarterbacks.

And if he’d been the K-State coach maybe a year earlier, Rockhurst High’s Nathan Scheelhaase might have been a possible solution. Instead, the Kansas City standout remains committed to Illinois, to which he pledged during the summer.

“I’m rock solid,” he said Wednesday.

Scheelhaase’s father, Nate Creer, was the the defensive MVP at Iowa in 1985 — when Snyder was the Hawkeyes’ offensive coordinator.

“I haven’t talked to them at all,” Scheelhaase said. “I know (Snyder) talked to my father, and I think they were trying to get me up there for a visit.”

HEAT CHECK: Wally, Rodney and Nick

NOTE: This will be a recurring item that will feature an update on how Kansas State prospects are currently doing.

Based on attendance figures, it seems some K-State fans must believe the men’s basketball team won’t be worth following until next year. While I usually don’t like to reward such negligence, I decided to check in anyway with Arlington Country Day’s Rex Morgan, who coaches two of the jewels in K-State’s recruiting class, Wally Judge and Rodney McGruder, and Arlington (Texas) Grace Prep’s Ray Forsett, who coaches Nick Russell.

ACD is 13-5, finishing with a 5-4 record in two national tournaments. McGruder, whom Morgan said is a legit 6-foot-6 with shoes on, is averaging 22 points and eight rebounds. The four-star recruit has struggled a little lately with his three-point shot, but McGruder spent some extra time in the gym Tuesday. He took 300 threes, and Morgan said he made 71 percent — someone is going to have to do the math on that.

Viewed by some as a shooter, Morgan said McGruder is a scorer.

“From 18 feet in, he’s outstanding,” Morgan said. “He has a little floater… Great intermediate game.”

Here we go again…

Happy New Year, all.

The goal this year, in addition to providing nuggets of news and the like, is to offer more analysis and opinion. Now, there is a chance I might offend some of you, but you’re always welcome to type your displeasure down below.

I brainstormed during my extensive holiday break – Vermont was fine, thanks – and solicited the advice of a Kansas State fan or two I respect very much. The result is a slew of new features that may or may not stick, and we’ll be rolling those out in the coming days/weeks.

Until then, some quick thoughts followed by a few links will have to do:
