DeMarcus Cousins

The 6-foot-10 power forward from LeFlore High in Mobile, Ala., is the No. 2 ranked prospect in the Class of 2009. He’d been committed to Mike Davis at UAB for a while, but when he refused to sign his letter of intent because the school refused to guarantee Cousins that Davis would be his coach, he decided to re-open his recruitment.

Recently, he told Rivals.com that he planned to take visits to Memphis, N.C. State and Kansas State.

We caught up with his coach, Otis Hughley, Wednesday morning.

“He has some interest (in K-State),” Hughley said.

A visit?

“I’m not sure if we’ve gotten that far yet,” Hughley added. “He may have said that and he may have meant that. Not sure if it will flesh out just yet.

“I’d rather undersell it than oversell.”

A K-State source confirmed no visit has been arranged yet.

Cousins, easily the best unsigned available player in the country, is “open.” Hughley said he’s looking at a bunch of schools.

“Washington, N.C. State, there could be others,” he said. “LSU, Missouri…

It seems it’s going to be difficult to beat out Memphis, however. This was from the Commercial Appeal:

“Before I committed to UAB, Memphis was high on the list as well,” Cousins said Thursday night after dominating a nationally televised high school game at UAB’s Bartow Arena. “We already had a relationship, me and Coach Cal. When I opened (my recruitment) back up, he was the first one to call me, and he’s leading right now.”

Now, Hughley said nothing of the sort Wednesday, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true, either.

Seems the LeFlore coach has a relationship already with Matt Figger, who is from “down here,” Hughley said. Figger is the man recruiting Cousins, not Dalonte Hill, as Rivals has listed on the prospect’s bio. Actually, according to Hughley, it’s Figger and Frank Martin.
