Yes, “forgo” is better. “Failed to qualify for..” is better yet. “Abandon” has a Chernobyl ring to it. I mean, this are perfectly good scholarships, right?

I’d say guys who had a scholarship lined up but couldn’t get qualified constitutes abandoning a scholarship. Would you prefer “forgo”?

Which of those guys “abandoned” their scholarships? What is that exactly? Was their scholarship on fire? Was it taking on water? Or, are you saying they left their scholarship on Valentine’s door with a little note in the middle of the night? TIA.
