You calling bubba a thug? Show me someone saying he has a sorted past. GRADES are the topic of discussion here. And not that I was even trying to make a point about criminals in the game, but since you brought it up; Patton is just an 19 year old kid busted for theft. I’m not talking about rapist and murderers… Hows he going to learn from his mistake if he has no future to look forward to. Make him run some stairs and start the best player. Besides, Who the hell is going to remember anything like that in 5 years? How many players were arrested in 1998? I’m a football fan, and I can’t tell you. Face it, Winning is important to everyone; And you’re not going to win games with “hard working, smart, under-the-radar local kid” because they rarely exist.

jah – Look at it this way, if we have several players go to jail, or prison, I would suspect that you job interviewer wouldn’t bring up football, because he might think you would be embarassed of your school. He might even be biased against you if the school you graduated from recruits players like that simply to win football games.

No offense, but keep your suggestions to yourself. Not saying that anyone not get an education. But if it were truly important to any athletic administration in any program, coach’s salaries would include graduation rate bonuses that were in the same league of bonuses for winning a division championship. I’m not going to lie to myself and believe our administration doesn’t believe that the only way to put our college in the national spotlight is have a successful athletics program. We’re not an Ivy League school. But every job interview I had, when I mentioned the degree I got from Kansas State University; The first response I got every time was: “You a football fan?” The success of an athletics program by winning percentage will steal the spotlight over the “prestige” of the educational standards in just about every situation. You really can’t disagree with me unless you’re an Ivy League grad. Like it or not, Football is the face of our program. When we’re successful, the university flourishes. When we’re not… we stall. Look at what’s happened to our alma mater just in the short 20 years since Bill Snyder took over.

That’s sad jah. I don’t think it’s too much to ask of a student athlete to at least get decent grades. Hell, anybody can get decent grades at KSU if they put in just a little bit of effort…I’m living proof of that.

As far as football being their ‘career path’…yeah, I’m certain that a lot of athletes see it that way. The smart ones realize that it’s a longshot though…and even if they’re good enough for the NFL, they’re always one injury away from needing a backup plan. If that backup plan is working for their daddy who owns a business or picking up my trash…and they can live with it, fine. If not, they’d better get that piece of paper.

I think you might be better off as a fan of Florida State, Miami, or Oklahoma. Just a suggestion…

That’s ridiculous! I personally don’t want my school full of idiots who are only there to play football and disregard their responsibility as a student because they can score touchdowns. There is no reason you can’t fill your roster with players who can, if not excel, at least perform in the classroom as well. I played ball at the JUCO level and it was absolutely ridiculous when your starting DB can’t even read! Besides that, they tarnish our image with constant mentions in police reports, and also frustrate the student body by not giving a damn in class.

Leave winning at any cost to Florida State and KU.

But honestly, if you want to look at Football like a career; which I guarantee many players only go to college for that reason. What do grades matter? Isn’t college just a stepping stone towards his career? Don’t give me this student before athlete bull. I don’t see colleges pulling in near the same revenue from Rhodes scholars as they do football players… but an academic scholarship only has to keep up their grades… an athlete has to keep up their grades and excel on the football field? Look; these guys are given scholarships because they can play; not because of their gpa. If they decide to take advantage of the incredible situation of getting an education and playing football… good for them. But as long as their taking care of business on the field, who cares. It might make me feel differently if Colleges didn’t take the college athletics revenue in such a business like manor. Not saying it’s wrong… It’s just I don’t believe there is any care for grades beyond keeping up an image. Drop the charade already.

I’m just saying that we’ll be fine with or without ‘Bubba’. If his grades aren’t good enough to get into KSU, then good riddance. That’s not putting myself on a pedestal…it’s just being a KSU fan instead of a KU fan. See, a KU fan would start calling up boosters to get them to talk to the school district that Bubba comes from. A week or so later his grades would be more than good enough!

I don’t think that I was demanding kids with 4.0 GPA’s…just kids who can get the grades to get into college. Or should Bubba get into school just because of his athletic talent??

What are your priorities when it comes to rooting for KSU?

Right… because “hard working, smart, under-the-radar kids are easy to find, abundant, and always work out to be superstars. I suppose you believe KSU should never provide a stepping stone for someone that could better themselves. Let’s just label everyone with any kind of question marks as trash and never lend a helping hand. And on top of that, we’ll win tons of football games because we won’t tolerate kids that don’t have 4.00 GPA’s and a spotless police records because they’ll be more dedicated to “Football” than someone that feels their best shot at a successful career is football. Come off your pedestal.
