Slants and screens (8/1)

NOTE: This feature will run frequently throughout the football season.

- JOHN Houlik was arrested early this morning. Read about it here. It’s the second K-State football arrest in the last 25 days. A trend? Hardly. But, on the eve of the 2008 season, it can’t be viewed as a good thing. And for Houlik, with the addition of so many linebackers, this can’t help his competitive situation.

- IT’S Fox Sports Net preview time! A 30-minute Kansas State extravaganza, if you will, featuring an interview with Ron Prince, a profile of Josh Freeman and much, much more will premiere Saturday, Aug. 2, at 4 p.m. If you miss the premiere, it airs again Aug. 4 at 8:30 p.m. (FSN Midwest only), Aug. 4 at 10:30 p.m. (FSN Kansas City only), Aug. 6 at 10:30 p.m. (FSN Kansas City only), Aug. 12 at 5:30 p.m. (FSN Kansas City only), Aug. 18 at 9 p.m., Aug. 25 at 9 p.m. (FSN Midwest only), Aug. 25 at 11:30 p.m. (FSN Kansas City only) and Aug. 30 at 12:30 p.m.

- NO love for the Wildcats in USA Today/Coaches’ Top 25 pre-season poll. Any poll at this time of the year is absurd, but nevertheless, a few interesting points can be gleaned. First, five Big 12 teams in the top 14 – No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 7 Missouri, No. 10 Texas, No. 13 Kansas and No. 14 Texas Tech – can’t be ignored. And neither can the fact that an additional four teams (Nebraska, Texas A&M, Colorado and Oklahoma State) received votes. And since 61 Division I-A coaches comprise the voting pool, it stands to reason that friendship – especially at this time of the year – played a large part. How else to explain A&M, with new coach Mike Sherman, receiving three votes? Or how about Colorado and Oklahoma State each “earning” a vote each? Everybody loves Dan Hawkins, so that explains that – but has anyone actually looked at CU’s schedule? Yikes. As for the Cowboys, well, they have talent. And Mike Gundy’s rant probably still resonates with some of his peers in the profession, which might explain OSU’s vote.

Guess my point is, do things look that bad in Manhattan? Hasn’t Ron Prince been talking up this team to anybody who’d listen? Doesn’t he have an abundance of friends in the coaching ranks? No one felt compelled to toss a vote, no matter how frivolous, his way?

How about, Dan Hawkins has a vote in the poll. That would explain where their one vote came from. As for OSU’s vote, I’ll guess Les Miles, former OSU coach.

We have to prove ourselves year in year out. At this point we don’t deserve any votes, but I’m hoping Prince and Co. will turn some heads this year and I think it can be done, getting into the top 25 that is. As for CU and OSU, the above poster mentioned Les Miles possibly voting for OSU. THis happens in a lot of places. Did Duke receive it’s vote? If so I’m betting it was from “The Ol’ Ball Coach” Spurrier as he usually does that.

Who really cares at this point. It’s more fun watching teams drop than rise. For instance, Texas a top 10 team? Why? How? Give me a break. Anybody want to wager that they finish out of the top 20 again?
