Davey O’Brien isn’t feeling Josh Freeman

Maybe my source(s) need to talk to some more people.

The 2008 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award watch list was released today, and Kansas State’s Josh Freeman isn’t listed among the 31 names. Oh, the usual suspects are there, such as Missouri’s Chase Daniel, Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford and Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell. They threw Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing in there, but then they must have reached a cap or limit. Maybe they could only give the Big 12 five slots.

Whatever the logic, the last spot went to Texas’ Colt McCoy. Yikes.

I won’t even bother giving last year’s stats to compare Freeman to McCoy - it wasn’t even close. (EDIT - OK, I should have looked. My bad.)

There is the possibility Freeman could be added late to the watch list for the award, which will be distributed Dec. 11 during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN.

ALSO, I spoke with K-State athletic director Bob Krause about Ron Prince, specifically about the notion of the third-year coach receiving an extension and if Mark Mangino’s gigantic raise at Kansas puts any pressure on getting a deal done.

“Like any other contract signed anywhere else, it has no bearing on us,” Krause said. “It looks like a good deal for KU. You always like to see guys have success, particularly a guy who had success falling from your tree.”

Krause described the extension process as “constant,” a process that apparently began last July. He said there is no set timetable for reaching an agreement.

“When we get it done, we get it done,” Krause said.

He refused to comment on what the hold-up, if there is one, might be, or if Prince was negotiating on behalf of himself after dismissing his former agent last year.

PROPS to Ian Campbell, who has a legitimate chance to become a three-time All-Big 12 first team selection. Today, he was named preseason All-Big 12 , the only Wildcat selected on the team chosen by the media.

So he could be the first ever No. 1 overall choice as a QB not to be selected to the preseason Davey O’Brien watch list. Cool.

    Note to Krause:

Success falling from your tree is not good when it lands in your backyard.

FelixRex…might I slightly adjust your otherwise outstanding comment…

“Success falling from your tree is not good when it lands in your neighbor’s backyard.”

As if one backyard could contain that particular “success”

    Note to Krause:

Success isn’t achieved by abandoning your tree.

The real concern is the size of what’s falling from your tree into your neighbor’s back yard.

It’s ridiculous that Josh wasn’t named to the preseason list.
