It’s down to Kansas State and Texas Tech for Montrell McDonald’s services. For now.
The Cowley Community College wing enjoyed his visit a couple of weekends ago to Manhattan, saying K-State “was pretty cool.” He hung out with David Hoskins and Michael Beasley, and he seems to have had a good time.
But…
“I’m not going to sign anytime soon,” said McDonald, who began his collegiate career at George Washington. “Right now, people will be calling out of the blue in the next couple of weeks. Anything can happen.”
The first day of the regular (or late, depending on your point of view) signing period is tomorrow, April 16. McDonald said his hesitance is nothing against the Wildcats, nor the Red Raiders, for that matter.
It’s just reality, he said.
Part of Tech’s appeal is location. McDonald is a Fort Worth native, and Lubbock is only five hours from home – it’s about seven hours or so from Manhattan.
Plus, he can see the role he’d be playing for the Red Raiders.
“They’re losing (Martin) Zeno, and they’ll need a wing to come in and play,” McDonald said.
He’s not down on K-State, even saying at one point Tuesday he “loved” the school. But it sounds as if a decision might be a while coming.
“Not soon,” McDonald said. “I’m going to play out my options. With only two years left, I have to be sure.”

Okay, this is probably an optimistic assumption; but could it be that the wait for McDonald is mutual? It could be that as of now we don’t have the scholarship for him, but we might before the late signing period is over pending decisions by Hoskins/Walker or finding out our APR information and if we really have lost a scholarship b/c of Bennett. If that’s the case, it would be wise of McDonald to have a back-up plan. Of course it could be that Tech convinces him to come anyway, but it would appear that there is at least a bit of willingness to wait. He could’ve easily said I’ll visit Tech and decide after that b/c its not real likely he gets another team starts recruiting him this late in the game unless he is on someone else’s radar. According to rivals, it looks like Tech is and will be putting a lot of pressure on him to sign as soon as possible.
How about a 5 on it with Mike.
Ask him how he feels now that the stress of deciding is over.
Is he having “buyers” remorse?
What is the first thing his siblings want him to buy?
How many days a week will be continue to wear purple?
Who does he think will be the leader of the team next year?
He said he didn’t expect to do this much this fast in college. What are his expectations for the NBA?
