Odds and ends

- I asked Bill how many times he’s been asked about O.J., including my latest query, and he replied, “Probably 20.” I asked if he ever got sick of talking about Mayo, and he said, “Nah, that’s my man, 100 Grand.” 100 Grand is his nickname for Mayo, because of his smile. Now you know…

- Ran into Mike, who looked relieved to be no longer answering questions. Asked him how he was doing, and he said, “Uhhhh…” Not sure if that was good or bad, but that was his response. But he said it was a bemused look on his face.

The power of O.J.

The kid has juice. There is something undeniable about O.J. Mayo. Maybe it’s his magnetic smile. Maybe it’s his polish. Or maybe it’s simply his game. But Wednesday at the Qwest Center (I can drop the Omaha because this is a blog), he captivated those who’d never spent any time around the Southern California freshman guard.

Little kids, especially. They were yelling for his autograph – about an hour before his arrival. But one kid, clutching a basketball in Trojan colors, said, “If I don’t get O.J. Mayo, I don’t care as long as I get Michael Beasley.”

One more person for O.J. to win over.

Figured that’d get your attention. And really, it’s little more than a tease, just a way to tell you that the Eagle has launched a new blog for the NCAA Tournament called “Posting Up.” This weekend, Levi should be providing most of the content and it can be found here.

OK, I won’t leave you high and dry like that. I spoke with Mr. Evans, who was either at the hospital or on the way there to be with a friend. I know this because he told me that’s why he had to get off the phone for about five minutes. He did say he’d call me back, but we’ll see.
