Peace Fatima and family. Last time I saw (Lil) Mike he was about one month old, wrapped in a blanket, (cant remember the color) laying on his back on my mothers couch in Ft. Washington Maryland. B.C had brought him over the house to show me his new son. I held Lil Mike and was thinking ” This is wild. ” Because we (me and bc) were still quite young ourselves and I remember thinking ” this is wild “… that he(mike sr.) had a little son. This is, Im guessing, somewhere around February 89. Me and BC didnt hang out much after 89-90. So I havent seen Bc since way back then.
Fast Forward To : April 2nd, 2008.
Im sitting in a library working my laptop. A brother sits down at the computer in front of me. His face looks familiar. [Mind you I am not a sports fan , ironic however im a professional boxer from the area...] so this brother sits down. I pay no mind, continue working. Im working, and an hour goes by. The brother at the computer tries to fix something or look for an input or output on the computer so he stands up, and I glanced up, and the face looked real familiar, so I go back to working. Then I stop and start thinking “Dam I know that guy from somewhere.” Then I thought that looks exactly like Jerome H. A dude who went to school with us in Largo, but I second guessed that because the last time I saw Jerome was about 95 or 96 and I remember Jerome had dreads and I looked back over at the dude and didnt see any dreads so I said thats not him. So I get back to work. Another hour passes and the guy in front gets up and walks away from the pc and I seee dreads and I said “Jerome Hawkins” he immediately acknowledged and turned around and recognized me. We greeted each other with the usually bearhuggs and then sat back down and started reminisensing(<—spelled incorrectly). Jerome starts throwing out names from way back, and Im responding to each one saying whether Ive seen them or not or the last time I spoke with them etc etc etc etc…Renee S., Mark B., Gino E., Mike B.(big mike) and I said “nah I havent seen bc in a minute. its been a while, mark said he seen him about a year ago, and i mentioned its funny because i remember when lil mike was born and everytime bc’s name comes up i try and calculate how old that little baby that was wrapped in the blanket that was laying on the couch in front of my pitbull. so i said to Jerome “yeah lil mike she be out of high school right?” trying to calculate the age of lil mike. Jerome says “LiL Mike is Number One Draft Pick.” I dont know much about sports; football, basketball, but Ive heard that term used before so I asked “What like in Prop basketball;

this is the first time i have ever seen your blog and its great, i love it!!! michael is such a great athlete watching that game last night he was amazing. so how did michaels love for ipods and spongebob start? the videos on youtube are hilarious. well good luck to michael and the rest of the team. god bless GO STATE!!!!!!

Hi there! I’m new to your blog & I wanted to tell you how much I enjoy reading about your family. Being a K-State student I’ve always enjoyed football season but your son has made me a HUGE basketball fan! It’s always great to see you & your family supporting Mike at the games too. But I was wondering….what kind of camera do you have? I’m looking for a new one & yours takes great pictures. Thanks! GO STATE!

Mama, thanks for the answer about Mike’s shoe size. It was a serious question, as my son, my wife and I were discussing and debating it during one of the games. I swear it looks like about a size 24 on my big screen TV!

Anyway, thanks for blogging for all of us this basketball season. If we don’t get another installment of MamaSayz, I want to wish you and your family good luck in the future. Thanks for joining the Wildcat family, even if you’re only around for one year.

PS – If Mike does decide to leave early for the NBA, make sure he gets that degree…sometime!

Dear Mama,
I have enjoyed reading and seeing all your pictures in the Mama Sayz column. You seem to be a wonderful mother and great inspiration to mothers everywhere to keep your children so grounded, especially Michael. I have enjoyed watching your son play ball but more importantly my son Zac has had the best year at KSU watching Michael and the rest of the Wildcats. He hasn’t been home since the 3rd of January because he didn’t want to miss a game!
Even if Michael, you and your family decide to move on to the NBA next year, know that this has been a magical year for the entire Wildcat Nation. Whether we were watching from the game, tv, internet, or listening to the radio! I can only thank you for allowing Michael to bring us this excitment!
May God bless your whole family in the decisions that you make and know that KSU will always be grateful for the opportunity that you gave us in sharing your talented son with us! Let’s go Cats! Let’s win a Big 12 championship!

Shaquille O’Neal was once told by legendary basketball coach John Wooden that “The true definition of a great player is how you make the players around you play.” To your knowledge, has that – creating shots for teammates, rallying them in times of adversity, dunking it home when the crowd needs a lift, and leading by example with hustle and a lack of outward frustration, among other things – ever been discussed with Michael? Or do you possibly see strides in those areas yourself? He has all the potential in the world and it’d seem that if he could rise up as a bona fide leader on and off the court like we see with so many of the “greats”, we could be singing his praises with the likes of even the NBA’s elite a few years down the road.

Mama,
Thanks so much for delivering the SpongeBob card to Lil Mike for my daughter Cooper, aka Lil Red. She was so excited to see she made your blog. She was even more excited to know it made Michael smile. Kids have a funny sense of what they can accomplish. Sharing all of your families experiences here in the Little Apple has really been special.
While you’re here, if you should need any taste of the East Coast let me know, I’ve got the hook up on Blue Crabs. Seriously, Old Bay and all! Take care and best of luck.
