Recruiting update (03/27)

Good stuff from gopowercat.com Thursday on Buchi Awaji (BOO-che uh-WAJ-ee) – I give props where it’s due. I spoke with his coach at Citrus College, Rick Croy, on Thursday and he said Awaji is a priority for K-State. “They need someone to come in and score,” he said. “The way they recruited him has been real professional… Real consistent.” Usually, Croy said, the recruitment has been handled by Matt Figger and Brad Underwood, but yesterday, it was Frank Martin. “I know they feel confident he can help them,” Croy said. He called Awaji “a great scorer with really, really good character.” The other schools in the mix are Georgia Tech, Nebraska and Iowa State.

Right now, it doesn’t look good with Tyree Evans. Not saying K-State isn’t interested, but the Motlow State guard said Thursday he hasn’t been contacted by the Wildcats since the season has ended. Maybe Awaji is more of a priority – I don’t know. He said he hasn’t heard from “anyone,” and he’s trying to get his grades in order.

Wesley Witherspoon can’t make up his mind. I spoke with his mother, Carol, on Thursday, dubbed “The Gatekeeper” by Wes’ father, Will, because she has taken such an active role in his recruitment. Anyway, “The Gatekeeper” said she spoke with Dalonte Hill this week, and she spoke with him last week as well. Only problem, it seems, is the lack of attention that showered on Witherspoon during the season. “The communication wasn’t there,” Carol said, adding she didn’t think her son would take one of his two remaining official visits to K-State; he has already gone to LSU, Texas and Virginia. But, because her son’s mind changes like the weather, she wasn’t willing to rule anything out. He is playing in the Jordan Classic in Madison Square Garden on April 19, and he might make a decision the first week of May. Interesting tidbit – former K-State assistant Charles Baker recruited Witherspoon’s older brother, Wynton, to Manhattan. Baker is now an assistant at Colorado, which is also recruiting Witherspoon.

K-State is going to be the second official visit for Cowley County’s Montrell McDonald. The former George Washington guard is scheduled to be in Manhattan tomorrow. Frank Martin and Brad Underwood were in touch immediately after the season ended. “There are no negatives about the school,” McDonald said. “As for the positives, it has to be the coaches. They’re good guys. I don’t really know any of the guys.” His first official visit was Oregon back in the fall, and McDonald said there was a possibility he might take his remaining three trips.

Much ado…?

My boss called a little while ago and e-mailed me this story from the Associated Press wire:

Michael Beasley is still grappling with a decision, but his coach expects the Kansas State star freshman to head into the NBA draft.

Frank Martin said in an interview with The Associated Press and the Manhattan Mercury on Tuesday he believes the 6-foot-10 power forward, even though he loves college life, will probably opt to turn pro.

“I think he’s going to go, and I think it’s the right thing to do, because he’s going to be the top pick in the draft,” Martin said.

Nice job by Doug Tucker and Mark Janssen. But, with no disrespect to my colleagues, I’m not sure anything new was uncovered in their Tuesday chat with Frank.

Post-mortem, ‘07-’08

OK, so this isn’t a typical “Post-mortem.” In fact, it has nothing to do with the Wisconsin game; I love what Bo Ryan extracts from his players, though. This “essay” is more about the immediate future of the program, and it was written off the top of my head, after listening to some concerned fans and reading what some critics have to say…

In any relationship, there has to be trust.

Do you trust Frank Martin?

Mama Sayz (03/24)

It’s about time, isn’t it? And it looks like she has enlisted a ghostwriter — her daughter, Mychaela, begins this week’s entry. You’ve been waiting to hear what “Mama Sayz,” and here it is. Don’t forget to read until the end, though. And I’ll do an end-of-the-season “Post Mortem” later this afternoon…

Hey, its Mychaela! Unfortunately you wont be hearing from my mother since somehow she got me to write the blog this week. Had a bit of a writer’s block but I guess I’ll start from here…

No. 11 K-State vs. No. 3 Wisconsin

My take, No. 3 Wisconsin

I believe Kansas State is going to be good today. I believe the Wildcats have regained their edge, and I believe the reason can be found here.

That said, Wisconsin is pretty solid. Nothing earth-shattering there, but it had to be said. I think K-State, with its athleticism, can disrupt what the Badgers try to run, even though they’re very proficient under Bo Ryan.

I know Frank will want to push pace, and I think that’s vital. When it comes down to it, though, when in doubt, I’m always more apt to lean towards the team with sheer difference-makers, and K-State has at least one of those. Not sure I see too many on Wisconsin’s roster.

Ate dinner last night at some joint where I saw Brian Butch posing for pictures and Jacob Pullen stopped by to hello to his parents. The Pullens are fantastic people, just like Ms. Smith, and they were all sitting together, catching up. Good stuff.  Expect something a little more in-depth on Jake if the Wildcats advance to the Sweet 16…

Stuff (03/21)

Not much stuff, but I spent some time with Dalonte today:

- He said the guys have just as much energy as Thursday night – “People talking, and we’re going hard, not settling for half-ass effort” – and he said Jacob Pullen was exceptional Friday at practice. File that away…

- Here was his take on Wisconsin’s Joe Krabbenhoft, a 6-foot-7 junior forward: “Their 3-man is a 6-foot-7 kid who competes, plays hard, brings a lot of energy, always attacking – he’s their glue guy. We’re trying to tell our guys there might be a chance you get caught up on him because they run a lot of that swing-motion action, and you might get caught on a switch, and you have to be ready to face, box and just keep him, deny him from going to the glass.”

- They’re a loose, loose bunch.

Post-mortem, No. 6 USC (03/21)

I called it. Yep, I’m that guy. Seriously, I told some of the veteran writers gathered here in Omaha that I thought K-State would win by double figures. Did I think that would happen? Nah. But I knew they’d practiced hard and they were believing in themselves and their ability to win a couple of games – at the least – in this tournament.

Best performance I’ve seen by the Cats. And while I don’t think they need to duplicate that tomorrow against No. 3 Wisconsin, they need to play with the same energy and effort to be successful… and I think they will.

Odds and ends

- I asked Bill how many times he’s been asked about O.J., including my latest query, and he replied, “Probably 20.” I asked if he ever got sick of talking about Mayo, and he said, “Nah, that’s my man, 100 Grand.” 100 Grand is his nickname for Mayo, because of his smile. Now you know…

- Ran into Mike, who looked relieved to be no longer answering questions. Asked him how he was doing, and he said, “Uhhhh…” Not sure if that was good or bad, but that was his response. But he said it was a bemused look on his face.
