I haven’t read any message boards or really talked to anyone about this game. I do know that several of the beat writers, myself included, can’t remember seeing a game like this, where two guys get 75 points but it’s not enough to win.

HALFTIME, KSU, 44-38
I’ve just been alerted that Mike already has his season average. Aaron Bruce missed a pair of free throws? Consider me shocked. Frank is floored by the sequence he just witnessed – an awful series where it seemed neither team wanted the ball. The Mayor missed a free throw after being fouled on a dunk. Dan Beebe, Tim Weiser’s new boss, is in the house. Howard Richman, sitting to my right, said, “Tim Weiser could be the next commissioner of the Big 12.” Thoughts? Mike just picked up a tacky one before the half. He’s got the Big 12 record for points in a half. I told H.R. he’d get 44. I think I shot low.

You’ve heard the noise:
Gotta have it. Can’t come away with anything less than a ‘W’. Must-win.
Blah, blah, blah.
You know what? Forget all of that. How about playing together and playing hard for 40 minutes? Pretend there aren’t two NBA draft picks on the floor – well, let’s not get too carried away; they need to get the ball – and just play a team game where the sum is absolutely greater than the parts.
That’s what Kansas State needs to do today against Baylor.
Can it happen? I’m skeptical. The Wildcats have yet to win on the road this month, but then again, they usually bounce back after a loss. I’ll say this – a win today sets up the next two games much better than a loss would.
I’m also skeptical Baylor’s guards go for 75 against K-State – as they did against KU a few weeks back. I’d dare the Bears’ bigs to go nuts, and there’s no way they can match what Mike and Bill will provide.
But with the Wildcats, especially on the road, you never know.
PREDICTION: K-State 82, Baylor 78
It’s not going to get any easier, folks.
Baylor is going to be desperate – and the Bears will be at home Saturday. Two days later, Texas – which might be the best team in the Big 12 right now – comes to Manhattan. And then it’s KU a few days after that.

FINAL, NU, 71-64
Great board by Mike – one-armed, falling to the ground. Fatima is in the stands, looking nervous. This is kind of nerve-wracking, even though it was also so utterly predictable. Dribble penetration for Jake, who extended too early on the attempt, apparently bracing for contact. No good, and “The Thunder from Down Under” grabs the rebound. He’s fouled, and Maric hits both free throws. Man, this is tragic. Frank is clapping his hands, trying to pick up Jake, which is nice to see – especially after we’ve seen him berate the freshman guard so often. Everything about Jake’s drive was nice but the finish. And speaking of finishes, it looks like the Wildcats are just that. Mike had a clean look at a 3 that sailed long, and Ryan Anderson was fouled on the rebound. He hits the first, and the Huskers are up 5. He misses the second, but Fred Brown can’t save the ball from going out of bounds. Frank stands and stares with his arms crossed. Not good. This feels so familiar.

I don’t see what Nebraska can do differently against Kansas State that is going to make a difference. That said, the road factor for the Wildcats can’t be overlooked. It’s very real, and it’s something this team is going to have to conquer.
Is this the week? With what happened to Baylor last night, you’d have to think the timing couldn’t be better. Take care of business tonight and move on to Saturday.

SOUNDS like Abdul Herrera is Kansas State’s to lose.
Because of an existing relationship between the 6-foot-10 sophomore center from Hutch Community College and Frank Martin — Herrera was briefly a Bearcat when the K-State coach was an assistant at Cincinnati and he also attended Miami Senior High, where Martin coached — Herrera aims to be a Wildcat.

If you’re an NFL Draft junkie like I am, you need to get a subscription to nfldraftscout.com ASAP. It’s so worth the $25 a year, if only for this and the next two months alone.
Here’s what I know – Jordy Nelson, punter Tim Reyer and cornerback Justin McKinney are the only Kansas State football invited to next week’s NFL Combine. McKinney apparently turned heads with his catch-up speed at the Hula Bowl.

The headline says everything you need to know. The loss in Lubbock dropped Kansas State in both polls. Not surprising at all. Just putting it out there. Do with it what you will.
