K-State vs. Nebraska (02/06)

FINAL, KSU, 74-59

Thirty-five for Mike. Maric has 14. Balanced scoring for NU, but I’m convinced balanced scoring is for chumps. As I predicted, Mike and Bill went for 50, and the Wildcats are going to win. Cookie is tough. And the fans make for the exits with 43 seconds left. Mike leaves to a standing ovation with 38 seconds left. He finished with 35 points and 13 rebounds - as Bob Huggins might say, “That’s just Mike being Mike.” Jake breaks double figures, hitting a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left. Crowd favorite James Franklin is in and he grabs a rebound. It’s over.

Service Information for Vanessa Stewart

From the K-State sports information office:

Funeral services for Vanessa Stewart, mother of senior guard Clent Stewart, will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, in Norman, Okla., the family has announced.

Mrs. Stewart passed away Tuesday after a long and courageous battle with bone cancer. She is survived by her husband, Clenton St., and sister Phyllis Weaver, both of the home; daughter LaTori (Brian) Carter, Norman, Okla., son Clenton Jr., of Manhattan; grandson Jordan LeGrand Carter; her mother Evangelist Ernestine Weaver of Forrest City, Ark.; sisters Cheryl (Wendell) Starr; Jackie (James) Brown, brother Daryl Weaver, all of Kansas City, Kan.; sister Anika Anderson (Sven) Hack of St. Louis, Mo.; and sister-in-law Kathy Stewart of Forrest City, Ark.

Services will be held at the Crosspointe Church, 2601 SE 24th Avenue in Norman. Interment will follow at the Warren Cemetery in Norman. Services are under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman.

Memorial donations may be made to the Cancer Care Center of Norman. Condolences may be sent online here.

To honor the memory of Mrs. Stewart, the K-State men’s basketball team has elected to wear pink shooting shirts in warm-ups prior to Wednesday’s game against Nebraska and will wear a patch on their uniforms bearing her initials.

My take, Nebraska (02/06)

There won’t be a repeat of last Saturday, and besides, Kansas State plays terrific at home. Plus, with the emotion stemming from the passing of Clent Stewart’s mother, the atmosphere could be charged - even for a mid-week, non-rival game.

I have no sense one way or the other if Clent will play. That’s his decision, and this has to be a difficult time for Stew, who has always been class. He should be allowed to take as much time as needed, and that’s probably what Frank has told him.

Then again, don’t be surprised to see him playing tonight.

Nebraska is a defense-first basketball team, but the Cornhuskers don’t have the horses. It’s weird to be saying because think back to where K-State was a month ago - unsure of itself just days after that debacle in Cincinnati - but if the Wildcats treat every opponent as a worthy foe, they’re fine.

As talented as this team is, it’s still not good enough to simply show up and win games. There aren’t too many that can.

Missouri was another lesson learned. Frank talked about this team dealing with success, and that was a prime example of how NOT to deal with success. Expect a much more focused K-State team tonight. I think Mike and Bill combine for 50-plus points, which might be nearly enough alone to beat the Corn. Aleks Maric might get 20, but I think the Wildcats will stifle his teammates.
