Borges: “Not now”

Al Borges resigned as Auburn’s offensive coordinator earlier this week, meaning he won’t coach the Tigers in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl against Clemson.

While K-State doesn’t have an opening in that capacity, it is known Ron Prince is an admirer of Borges. Remember the news conference the week before the season opener against Auburn?

"They have two of the very best coordinators in college football in Al Borges and Will Muschamp," Prince said then. "These are guys that have extensive resumes and they’re absolutely terrific football minds."

Thing is, Borges is available. He’s looking to get back to work, too.

But when reached Wednesday, Borges - who has been a major conference coordinator since 1995, starting at Oregon and followed by stops at UCLA (1996-2000), California (2001), Indiana (2002-03) and Auburn (2004-2007) - said he has never had a conversation with Prince.

"I haven’t had any contact with him," Borges said. "Not now, not before, and not before our game. Not that I didn’t want to…"

He asked if there was an offensive coordinator opening at K-State. James Franklin currently occupies that role. Despite rumors, there hasn’t been any movement on Prince’s staff. That could change in the coming weeks, though, especially with the annual coaches’ convention - where a lot of hires are made - scheduled for Jan. 6-9 in Anaheim.

Way to go starting a rumor and putting the same rumor to rest in the same column!

Jeffrey, this is one of your more “WTF!?” blog entries. I hope to see more of the same in the future.

Wasn’t Auburn pretty mediocre all around this season, especially in Offense? What’s the best year they had with the offense under this guy?

There’s a method to my madness, so to speak. Despite Prince’s claims he doesn’t anticipate any coaching changes, I figured I’d start calling around - especially to people who are currently out of work and available to talk to anyone they please. Why not Borges? He said he hasn’t been contacted. Fair enough. Can’t hurt to ask, right?

Like said before, I’d much rather see Muschamp on the sidelines.

Huh? Bringing a veteran coordinator from a conference like the SEC to town…. that’s just stupid talk when your homie from 10 years back at App St needs a job. Bro’s before Joe’s. That’s what I always say.

Prince needs to do something before KSU slips any further into mediocrity. I wonder if they will figure out how to use Lamark Brown next year.

Lots of Red Sox on the Mitchell report. Not surprising.

Al Borges is a great offensive coordinator, look at what he did with jason campbell. He went from skittish to sharp in 2 years, and now starts in the NFL. Borges just lost waaay too much talent to make a go of it this year, and Brandon Cox didn’t do Borges any favors. I’d love to have him in Manhattan in some capacity… in fact, I was surprised we didn’t contact him about the HC position when LCBS retired.

Has anyone entertained the thought that this might be a well informed prediction?

Huh, way to go there Nostra-Martin (as in Nostradamus), did you have inside information or was it a lucky story posting it less than a month before an OC opening emerged in the Little Apple? With Franklin now on his way to Maryland, does Prince go knocking on Borges’ door?
