It was incredible to be home in Wichita this past weekend. Thanks to everyone who came out to Westlink Christian Church to see me! Now on to American Idol …
Idols rocked the house! For the first time ever, the four remaining contestants paired up and sang duets. We also got to see the judges’ first reaction to the Idol performances. Many viewers don’t know that the judges are able to watch the dress rehearsal while getting ready in their dressing rooms but due to a mishap before the show … no dress rehearsal.
Adam started the show off and no one caught up the rest of the night. I think the fact that Allison now uses Adam’s hair lady and that Danny is screaming at the end of his song shows the contestants aren’t even denying Adam’s winning it all.
Adam’s voice fit perfect with Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lot of Love.” I’ve always thought Adam could be this millennium’s Freddie Mercury. Glam rock has been waiting for the right artist to make a comeback, and Adam is the guy.
Allison Iraheta sang Janis Joplin’s “Cry Baby.” She did a great job, but I get the feeling that the judges have picked her as the next to go and she knows it. This is really a hard place to be in as a contestant because everything done is from a defense mode, with every move overthought. Overthinking on Idol is never a good thing.
Kris and Danny’s “Renegade.” I wasn’t crazy about these vocals. I thought it was interesting that the two non-rockers were put together. I would have liked to see them do a “rock” song performed with a twist, maybe acoustically with real tight harmonies. I got the impression that they were quite annoyed with the whole process …
The Beatles’ “Come Together” was a perfect song choice for Kris Allen but the delivery was a bit dull. It really fit his laid-back feel-good vibe and added a rock edge. But for some reason, I just felt it was lacking. I think that he can make it through to next week but it will be a close call.
Danny Gokey sang the first half of Aerosmith’s “Dream On” in a great gravelly voice. I wasn’t a fan of the scream at the end. It actually felt like someone trying to imitate Adam. Not every Idol fits every genre. I still am a huge Danny fan and am not worried about him making it through tomorrow night.
Adam and Allison rocked out to “Slow Ride” … spandex, leather and fingerless gloves! I’ve missed you ’80s glam rock!
So who is getting the boot tomorrow? I think it is between Allison and Kris. Do you agree with Simon and think Adam and Allison’s duet will save her? Do you love glam rock as much as I do? I love reading your comments (as does my mom). Have a great week and Happy Mom’s Day.

voting with right hand, dialing with the other for adam.
tonight showed how bad it can get & how good iy can be ..9canjt type & call… more latr ….
Double A finale: Adam and Allison.
Adam was phenomenal but not obviously *original* (not that I think he should have been..some things you don’t mess with). Allison once again was listening to my psychic channeling and sang Joplin. And I beg to differ that she sang it like Joplin. She changed up the timing on the *Cry Baby* notes…she had some trills that were almost Garlandesque…which is darn hard to do in a Joplin song. I thought she was brilliant. And while I didn’t bawl tonight I did get tears in my eyes listening to her and watching her sing her heart out.
And I loved that she talked back. Simon says: You should have sung the Queen song and she says *there wasn’t a Queen song*.
Hawkmama you are right that Adam is a plant. He evidently did the music for one of Randy’s projects. Go to votefortheworst.com for the details. I actually am not adverse to plants as long as they don’t get special treatment like Joanna Pancitti.
Hard Rock is not Kris’s thing nor is it Danny’s. Kris wasnt great tonight but he was not awful either.
Which leads me to Danny. His performance 2 weeks ago which was reminiscent of Robert Wuhl’s Volare performance in *Hollywood Knights* turned out to be merely a preamble. Last week he needed cleaners for the cake flour and eggs on the floor. This week, I think they needed to hire cleaners for the ultimate result of Volare performance. He sucked on the low notes and sucked on the high notes and then just left it all there for Adam and Allison to clean up with their duet.
Which was and Idol moment. I don’t like Adam’s fans. They are absolutely insane. But, I like Adam and Allison.
Kris will go home but Danny should be going home.
Enjoyed your article/blog page, Phil – thanks! Absolutely, rock night was perfect for Adam. He is already a superstar – unique, stylish, unconventional and unpredictable – consistently great and exciting to watch. Stellar vocals! He could be destined to be this decade’s Freddie Mercury/Steven Tyler/Madonna all rolled into one.
By the way – it’s funny that Monica says she doesn’t like Adam’s fans – that they’re crazy. My husband and I are about as far from crazy or what you’d expect for “Adam fans”. We’re in our late 30’s, parents, conservative, church members and neither of us have tattoos or piercings, but Adam is so clearly talented and exciting to watch/listen to that he is our favorite contestant in any season we’ve watched so far.
Dear Laura:
You obviously have a real life which involves watching Idol 2x a week and and have jobs and kids and food to put on the table. I, on the other hand, being old but still able to work the internet, have nothing to do but look at the American Idol Boards. I like Adam too. Honestly, he should win. But the Adam fans on those boards are writing to Coca Cola and Ford because last week Adam was *humiliated* by having to choose which bottom 3 he was in. Those are the fans I’m talking about. I absolutely loved Adam’s duet with Allison tonight. I have, all my life, prided myself on knowing a snow job when I see it. I don’t see it with Adam.
That is why I’m for an Adam/Allison finale. (I know a snow job when I see it is why I don’t want Gokey to win).
Phil, I love glam rock as much as you do!! I love the 80s glam, and I would adore it making a come back. I was too young to appreciate it in the 80s, but I would so appreciate it now!! Go ADAM!
yep, monica, snow is what it will be if hokey-gokey goes head to head with adam in the finale. geeezzz… am i the only wichitan who thinks gokey is a one-note-wonder? would you really listen to this guy on the radio or pay money to go see him? not this chickie!
adam, on the other hand, is so creative that i would ponie up some dough to buy a ticket and even drive to kc if necessary to see him perform live.
as soon as simon begins to see $$$ when he looks at allison, he will begin to talk differently. that magic moment might have happened when the dynamic duo sang their duet tonight. time will tell….
Allison and Adam were certainly in their comfort zone tonight. Love love loved their duet, which was made even more entertaining by their interactions with each other. Solo performance goes to Allison for me, mainly because of song choice. Thanks for the 411 on Adam, Monica. I hate the thought of a plant winning it all. It goes against the beauty of American Idol and undiscovered talent. But he is good.
And I still love Kris. He was obviously NOT in his comfort zone but he performed better in rock week than Adam did in country week. I honestly thought Kris’ performance was pretty decent. The judges were unfairly harsh with him.
I do not hate Danny, I do like his voice….but not tonight. He was simply wretched. He tried to be something he clearly is not with that song. Just the opposite of Kris, who played to his strengths and stayed true to his abilities.
I’d rather see Danny go home tomorrow night than Kris. But at this point in the season, regardless of the genre or performances, voters have their favorites. Sour notes, visible shaking from nerves, fainting, soiling their drawers….. it just doesn’t matter, they’ll get the votes from their loyal fan base. From that perspective, Danny (never in the bottom 3) will probably be safe. And Allison could be in danger. At this point…anyone could go or stay. Why even Plant Adam has been in the bottom three.
Loved Allison’s Joplin ‘Cry Baby’. Thought Kris did a superb job with a genre he obviously isn’t comfortable with. Adam was Adam and in his element. Danny to me was the weak link tonight. I have thought this before though so will have to wait and see.
So much talent in four performers hate to see anyone go.
I again absolutely loved Adam, he was in his true element last night. I wasn’t entirely crazy about Alison last night but she was definitely better than Danny. I had my back turned to the TV during the latter part of his song and honestly thought someone had turned the TV to a horror movie when he let out that scream! It was not a good note to end on and I enjoy Danny, so don’t be hating on me for saying that. I also enjoyed Kris again last night but as far as the people left battling for the title, I have to think that Danny and Kris will be in the bottom 2 and Kris will go home. I know many of us has said it numerous times on this site but I’ll restate it again.
This is absolutely the hardest year to choose my favorite contestant. These people are so freakin talented, next years Idol will definitely be hard to top!!! Everyone will have a terrific career, whether or not they get the title of American Idol.
I thought the duet with Allison/Adam was the highlight of the night, followed closely by Adam’s solo. He commanded the stage, was spot on with the vocals, and rocked the house.
I’ve always liked Kris, but there’s something strange about his mouth,(it looks crooked) that keeps me from enjoying watching his performances. He’s a strong, solid artist, but there’s nothing special about him or his sound. With the right song, he could have a hit, but it’ll be the song, and not a “signature” voice that’ll sell cd’s and downloads.
I do get blown away by Allison, she has a great voice for certain songs, and has a confidence on stage that is remarkable for a 17 year old.
Danny was so out of his element last night that it was uncomfortable to watch for me. The slower parts of the song were OK, but him trying to blow it out of the water at the end just ended up blowing up in his face.
Danny should go home based on last night’s performance, but I really think it will be Kris, or Allison. I’m rooting for Allison to stay.
lol Karaoke Gokey. perfect name for him. I am a die hard Aerosmith fan and i literally threw something at the tv. They are calling it the note heard round the world. But the entire song sucked. I canNOT believe this guy has not landed in the bottom 3. I say vote both him AND Kara off tonight and be done with it!
I still think Kara needs to be voted off! She is soooo annoying to me. And Randy is really starting to get to me. What’s up with that?
Poor Kris, he got the shaft because he had to sing right after his duet, not fair. I noticed they gave Adam and Allison plenty of time to recoup, but dang they were good!! It is definitely anyone’s guess tonight!
Agree – Kara needs to go. Adam has it hands down.
You know, last week was horrible to me. I hate that kind of music. My wife and I have been discussing Adam for several weeks, we are 46 years young, and still rock out! We had predicted that Adam should blow everyone away by taking on “Dream On”! I kid you not!
Go figure, Danny tries to take it on??? As soon as they said it, I knew he was in for it. Way too big a song for him. If Adam would have sang that song, we would all be oohhhing and awwiiinnggg about how Adam was the best by far! Adam is heads and shoulders above the others, but I do love Allison. How in the heck did she become a rocker? She wasn’t even alive during the heyday in the 80’s. Her parents must have brought her up right!
What an interesting night! Danny just looked uncomfortable, during the duet and his solo, I’ve heard a slow, female arrangement of Dream On, and seriously Danny should have done that one and he would have sailed through, I think he should go home tonight, I enjoyed Kris far more. The Adam Alison duet was truly awesome, I have said from beginning it should be Adam & Alison in the finals even though…..I don’t really care all that much for Adam. He is very talented but as a Rock Fan (when was Zepplin considered Glam Rock??) I felt he didn’t really do it justice and I couldn’t wait for it to end. I get tired of his screaching/screaming. Sorry all you Adam fans. He should have kept to the lower range as Slash suggested to him. But he can do no wrong now, it’s those dollar signs in Simons eyes!!
Ah Yes, the Final Four of American Idol, and our soon to be winner Adam once again proves his power, performance, and talent for everyone. If you’re a long time AI fan like me, this was a great theme night we’ve long been waiting for. I give huge props to Simon and the AI team for bringing Slash to the big stage and showcasing some great rock music.
While Adam continues to amaze, I can hardly believe the falling that Allison has done. What was she thinking? This too should have been her night! Our “rocker girl” fell from grace with that terrible song choice last evening. With Slash at her side, why oh why not Joan Jett!? Or Pat Benatar!? Her Joplin song was not to her rocker edge and I felt her performance was okay at best. Clearly, she signed her papers home, right? right?
As for Kris and Danny, they are two great guys and good performers who tried their best despite their own styles different from tonight’s theme. I liked Kris on the guitar with the Beatles’ classic. I even liked the first part of Danny’s take on “Dream On”. Unfortunately, Danny couldn’t pull off the end of the song, albeit most anyone could not as well.
As a GNR fan, hair metal fan, and rock and roll fan, I loved this week’s theme. Your bottom three will include Kris, Danny, and Allison. Allison should be going home based on her poor song selection and performance last night, but perhaps Adam did save her in the duet – so Danny may be headed out the door.
Allison? Danny? I just can’t decide who will be singing “Home Sweet Home”. One more request AI!? Bring on Vince Neil and the Crue boys to perform their signature classic live this evening! Light those lighters and cell phones!
What impressed me the most last night was Adam’s performance in the duet. It would have been very easy for him to overpower or “upstage” Allison, and he didn’t. I felt he went out of his way to showcase her talents and encourage her. I thought it was an absolute class act, as it is when he goes out of his way to thank the band and the arrangers.
Now for some payback…
Seems to be a quiet week for all of you TONE DEAF IDIOTS that have gone on and on about Adam’s screaming, doesn’t it? OOOH I can’t stand his shrill shrieking! All he does is scream! Yuck! Poo Poo! Oh I love Danny!
Here’s what Simon should have said: Danny, it was horrific. It sounded like cats mating. I couldn’t wait for it to end. That last note was so excruciating I was praying for someone to end MY life to make it stop. By the way, is that vest mauve?
What really made it funny was Slash KNEW it was coming. He warned us about the last note and he was laughing his you-know-what off in the background. Priceless.
Who’s going home? Anybody but Adam.
jerry is right… i looked away from the screen when danny was singing – it was awful all the way through.
and adam’s style is right on target when he hits those fab high notes. that’s what rock is about – taking it to the limit and beyond. adam does this every single week.
I’ll will be the first to admit that I am not a rocker fan at all. I thought that Allison was really good last night. Her best so far, but what do I know. The only song that I even knew was the Beatles. I thought that Kris did an okay job with it. Poor Danny, was not his best last night. Agree with Jerry on the Slash comment about the last note. Saw it coming. Adam, Adam, Adam….I know he is talented but really. All the screaming and screaching. Just my thoughts!!
I think it will be Kris going home and Danny may make his 1st visit in the bottom.
First off… I don’t miss the 80’s! Why?? Because I never left the 80’s!! Ask anyone that knows me!! I am stuck there!! Miami Vice is still in fashion in my World!! Hairbands still rule!!
Anyway, onto the show!!
I think Kris will be going tonight. My 18 year old daughter is a huge Beetles fan, and I asked her what song he should sing. She was thinking Hey Jude. I told her, No!! Come Together, but if he does that song, he will have to have a gravelly voice, which he didn’t. Danny could have pulled that song off. Kris couldn’t and didn’t.
Allison WAS saved by her duet. Watching AI and Rockstar Supernova, I know that if someone sings Janis Joplin, they’re writing their ticket off of the show!
I’m telling ya, people….last night did not affect voters at all. They’re going to vote for their favorite no matter how bad/good they were last night. Adam haters will still be Adam haters and Danny lovers will still be Danny lovers, and so on. Matt voters from last week….probably won’t be Adam voters. But at any rate, in a few hours we shall know who will go.
I can’t stand Adam’s screeching either. Sheesh. I’ve been a big Danny fan, but I’m thinking last night might have done him in, it was not good. I’ll throw him in with the screeching Adam for last night’s show. Allison is proving to me to be a one trick pony. Can she do anything else besides her gravely grunts?? I’ve waffled around for several weeks, but I’m rooting for Kris after last night.
It seems that the sign collapse that happened before the show was an omen of what was to come. Just as the sign broke in half, so did the show. Adam and Allison were awesome and looked totally comfortable, but Danny and Kris…ouch! Did anyone else notice that it seemed like Danny and Kris hated each other and everything about their duet? Danny even seemed upset during his solo performance…of course, if you knew that note was coming, you might be upset too. I love Kris and I give him a lot of credit for playing and singing, but it seemed like both he and Danny were just disconnected from their performances. I truly am a fan of all 4 left on the show, but I feel like Danny is at his max. He doesn’t appear to have anything more to give (dying cats aside). Oh, and when did the judges start dressing to match the theme week? Kara was trying WAAAAAY too hard to be a rocker. I found her comment to Danny that he was trying too hard to be true, but just a little ironic!
Here ya go KsKitty:
Danny Gokey sings the “Best of Adam Lambert”. Love the body language as well near the end. Sophisticated, yet quite familiar.
Enjoy!

These performers will be millionaires within the next year. After all look at Kelly Pickler, Clay Aiken, Kimberly Caldwell, just to name a few. They are all instant winners.
I think Danny was going more for the Greg X Voltz cover of Dream on than the Aerosmith version but the last note was not good. Interesting how they really emphasized slash’s comment about needing to hit that last big note and it really just fell flat. I love rock….but it is frustrating that they pick the strength genre of their plant. They are all talented kids and will all do well. Their fans will support their projects and give them success
Am I the only one that thinks Adam is same stuff…different song? I cannot imagine buying a CD. Everything will sound the same. Reminds me of David A. last year. I know who I would like to win, and that is Kris. But, unfortunatly he probably won’t.
Angela I agree to a point about Adam. He is a treat to watch and I would go to see him in person. I wouldn’t however buy his CD. Too many scream notes for me. I like to enjoy my music and relax with it. Kris is my choice also.
