After tonight’s Idol, who will be “Staying Alive”? Two Idols will be axed due to Matt Giraud’s save last week so being left to sing “I Will Survive” is even a harder feat. Enough with the disco puns …
LiL Rounds started off with a performance of Chaka Kahn’s “I’m Every Woman” that the judges did not like. I think they are finished with her and nothing she does will make them like her again. I personally thought they were pretty hard on her but after 7½ seasons, I’m not surprised she has been dubbed the whipping girl.
Each week Kris Allen impresses me more and more and this week is no exception. His version of “She Works Hard for the Money” was great. He is quickly gaining momentum and is definitely the dark horse of this season.
Danny Gokey did an amazing rendition of “September.” He brought back the Michael McDonald quality that I love about his voice. His energy and vocals were amazing. I hate to say it, but I agree with Simon to a point – Danny started on top so he is going to have to do something to keep himself exciting enough to root for. I loved it and have never been shy about my support of Danny.
Allison strutted her “Hot Stuff” tonight and gave another solid showing. Because of Lil’s fall from grace, as the only female left in the competition she will definitely be in the Top 3 … and she deserves to be there.
Adam Lambert crooned “If I Can’t Have You” from the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack. Again, it was great, and the judges couldn’t find enough synonyms for the word great. Guess I couldn’t either.
Matt Giraud uses his second chance to sing “Staying Alive” for America. He is working hard to earn votes and it was a fun high energetic arrangement, just not one I could hear on the radio. Only time will tell if it was enough to outlast tomorrow’s double kill.
Anoop Desai’s “Dim All the Nights” is missing the smoothness he usually gives us when singing ballads. Simon said it was one of his worst performances, taking away all the praise the other three judges gave him. I think he will be in the bottom three once again, but he wasn’t nearly as bad as Simon led on.
Results night should be a repeat of last week with Lil Rounds, Matt Giraud and Anoop in the bottom. It is tough to make it through a double elimination … Chris Richardson and I are the ones to ask!

hmmm… i would have bet money that lil would have sung “i love the night life” by donna summer. i wish she had. i think she will go bye-bye tomorrow night.
adam was fa-bu-lous once again. what else can i say???
i still am not as crazy about danny as everyone else is. and matt left me cold again. anoop is gone. allison is a winner, but won’t make it over adam. chris was really, really good tonight. and, much as i hate to admit it, i was in agreement with simon all night long.
i hope it is allison, chris, and adam in the final three.
I thought Kris’s performance was mediocre at best. I hated the folk song take on a disco number. It all sounds like whiny white boy music to me. Allison was ok but it is all too nasal and the note she tried to hit at the end of her song just reminded us that she does not have the vocal abilities that Adam Lambert has. Danny sang the same song he did last week and the week before…ok maybe the words were different but it sounded just the same… All gravel all the time.
posted comments under wrong thread.
Rather than repeat what’s been said, I will discuss Allison’s outfit. Her look struck me as a mix of disco ball and dominatrix. She’s only 16–it made me uncomfortable. I guess I know I’m getting old after saying, “If I was her mother, I’d be mortified.” My husband disagreed, but a sexy 16-yr-old isn’t a turnoff to some, I guess? Those heels and torture tights…
My favorite performance tonight was Kris Allen. Yea, he took disco and made it his own but his vocals were great. Adam took disco and made it his own too but I did not enjoy the screaming and felt like it was unnecessary but just there “because he can wail”. Plus the whole time he was singing in my head I was trying to hurry him up because I was hearing the original version which is much more uptempo. I realize Kris’s song was slowed way down too but I didnt feel that way watching him. I promise you all, I am not picking on Adam. I have liked him from the beginning but maybe he’s getting too predictable. Allison was good too but alls I could think about watching her was “she’s gonna fall off them shoes!!” And yea, she was a bit screamy too. Anooop didnt excite me but I didn’t hate it. Kinda thought he had that “terrorist look” going on with the scruffy facial hair though…I wasn’t as moved with that as our dear half wit Paula was. I’m afraid we’ve seen the last of Lil. She looked great but didnt have it going on vocally. Danny was pretty good. Good enough to earn a spot for another week anyway. Matt, I really like him at the piano singing his “soul” out but not the stuff he’s been trying to do lately. Tonight was no exception. The whole thing looked like he was trying to hard and I got the feeling the judges were going to nail him but then most of them didnt. Was that to save face and prove to America that they were right in saving him last week? Ahh…and the “office politics” go on. Why don’t they just give Adam the win and save us all alot of misery….you know they want to.
Bottom three-Same as last week. Lil going home. She really is not that good after listening to her the last couple of weeks. I’m in agreement with Pauleygirl-just give Adam the win. Have you notice that he screams his songs ALOT!!! Still my favorite is Danny. Kris Allen was very original tonight. Good job.
I am in agreement with everyone else regarding last nights performances. Lil, dear Lil, I hope you have your bags packed tonight because you really need to go after the last 3 weeks performances. Once again, I couldn’t hardly wait for her songs to be over with. She has a terrific voice, she proved that in auditions, but she has not progressed in the competition and needs to go home.
Matt will also be going home tonight, once again I wasn’t impressed by his song choice and I thought he was way off on quite a few of his notes.
Of course, we also know that Anoop will be in the bottom 3, but he won’t go home. I didn’t care for his singing either last night. He wasn’t the showman that he has been in the past.
Top 3 where Kris, Adam and Danny. I really loved both Kris and Adams versions and wanted to hear more. Danny was good (again) but as Simon pointed out, there wasn’t anything exciting about that performance.
Alison didn’t sing as well last night as she has in the previous weeks, but she is headed for the final 3. I was scared for her when I saw those heels! I would have opted to sit down the entire song if I would have been wearing those!!!!
Lil & Anoop, I think, for sure in the bottom three. I think Lil hit the road tonight. Adam, as usual, delivered a full package. Yes he screams but so did David Cook and tons of others. Adam will for sure be in the finale. So hard to say who will join him.
Lil and Anoop have to go. Anoop was one of my favorites, but he just does not stack up to the rest. Last night’s show was very entertaining. So that made it obvious who the two least talented were.
I am completely sold on Kris Allen. He totally morphed a disco number into his own acoustic style without making it cheesy. When I saw him holding his acoustic guitar on disco night I cringed. But the acoustic instrumentation was incredible! It wasn’t a remake of somebody else’s version, it was his and it was FABULOUS!! I could hear it on the radio. Adam tried the same with his number but I’m sorry….it did sound cheesy to me and not at all radio-worthy. Nothing Adam does is radio-worthy because of the screaming. Broadway worthy, yes.
Danny was very good. Allison was good, too. She is definitely an anomaly. Could we see her birth certificate please? How can that voice, that perfect voice, be coming from a 16 year old who looks and dresses like a woman in her twenties?
Matt tried really hard with his song. He might make it past Lil and Anoop but I doubt it. Lil; oh please let her go home. This is getting painful. Anoop has a lovely voice and a lovelier look (NOT terroristic for crying out loud) but his days are numbered on Idol.
The show was really fun. Disco frightened me and I almost didn’t watch. Glad I did, though.
Darn it, i missed it.
I haven’t really watched the show in a couple of weeks… but by what I have read… Anoop will probably be gone tonight. What I have seen of him the past couple of weeks, he’s not progressing. Neither is Lil Square. They were at the top of the list when it was Hollywood week… but they have stayed stagnent.
Anoop was my choice to go all the way… but he has failed me!!
I think Adam’s downfall is all of his screaming.
I can’t stand Adam. Thank goodness for my DVR…I pause it when he comes on and fast forward through it! YUK! I really hope he doesn’t make it to the top 3…I will never watch again if he does!!!!
Monica, you need to re-post that entry over here! Brilliant. The Gokey “Volare” reference is absolutely priceless, I busted a gut on that.
Phil, kudos to you. This blog has really became informative and insightful. The picture still desperately needs to go but thank you regardless.:)
I thought Lil did a very nice job last night. Don’t think it will save her, but I enjoyed it none-the-less. Much of the song choice/genre criticism needs to be focused Gokey’s way.
Nipplehead Matt was awful. Ditto to Anoop, Gokey and especially Allison. Her’s was repulsive on a couple of different levels.
Adam and Kris shined against their competition.
In closing, Paula Abdul is in need of some serious help. Everytime she opens her mouth it sounds like she’s confused 3 Hallmark cards and it has really crossed the line from “that’s Paula!” to “Who is she, why is she here and why won’t she shut up?” She’s really a huge drag on the entire episode.
I was warming to Adam a little there for a while, but I’m so over any thought I had that he might have something. He totally RUINED that song last night. That shows the difference in Adam and Kris for me. Kris took a song, remade it, and made it work. Adam did not. I’m still a Danny fan, and thought last night he was better than the last couple of weeks. And I’m also still a big Matt fan. He may not win Idol…but he will do very well and go very far (ala Chris Daughtry). Bye Bye to Lil and Anoop…..see ya in the funny pages.
hi phil
enojoy reading your blog. do you know who the musical celebrity was in the audience on last night’s show. he had long blonde hair.
thanks!
Vince Neil of Motley Crue was there last night.
thanks jerry!
Worshipper, ‘I love the night life’ was not a Donna Summer song. That was Alicia Bridges, I believe. Matt, Lil, and Anoop in the bottom 3. Lil and Matt, will go home.
I see that you all have it mixed up. The judges have been on Lil’s tail for 4 weeks and the new girl is happy because it takes the heat off of her inability to see talent. Paula always looks so stoned , wonder how she even knows what is being sang. I really like Simon because at least he is real… all of his comments are not fair but what is. Randy is just a actor that’s all.Adam , how in the world can anyone say what he does is singing… more like hollaring to me. He should have been axed a long time ago.
Lil, Matt and Anoop in the bottom three. Lil and Matt will go home tonight.
We’re about to find out…..one minute from now!!
OK..reposted here. Glad you got the reference Jerry. I watched Volare on Youtube again today. I think my assessment was spot on!

Glad to see that you agree with me that Lil can do no right as far as the judges were concerned. I’m not rooting for her to win but after she sang I put my fist up in the air and said *All Right!* and then listened to Randy and the rest of the judges read off their notes about how bad she is without ever pointing to any specific problem with her performance as if the producers had written their criticisms. She is the VFTW favorite for 2 weeks in a row and that has sealed her fate in terms of honest judgments.
I never understood how Kris got into the top 13 but after tonight I guess America knew better than me. I never thought an acoustic guitar and disco could work but it did.
Adam is genius.
Allison disappointing again. She seems to have lost her spark. Maybe the stress is getting to her. Still not the worst. Although I think the judges may be wishing they hadn’t wasted their save on Matt tomorrow.
Throw Matt back. Cheesy song. Completely frantic. He cannot take the pressure.
Anoop did well but he has no charisma despite his new facial hair. Ironically…he is just to *white bread* for people to see him as a star.
Danny gave a brilliant performance reminiscent of Robert Wuhl’s classic performance of *Volare* in the movie Hollywood Knights. At times I could almost sing along with Danny. I’m sure Robert will be proud at this homage to his genius.

Bottom: Lil, enough already. Bless her heart, she just can’t seem to get it right. Anoop, he has a decent voice, but I just don’t think he can go on much longer. Matt, I’m glad they saved him last week. I don’t think he will win, but I think he deserves to stay longer than Lil and Anoop. Danny, well, he’s Danny. He has a very good voice, but IMO he just isn’t really all that entertaining. My top 3 are Allison, Kris, and Adam. Allison and Kris, because they both have the voice and originality to go far. Adam because, well because he’s Adam and he’s freaking awesome.
thanks, larry. i stand corrected… alicia bridges it was! darn… i hate being wrong!!!
