Idol Hits a Sour Note

Coming into tonight, there were only a few contestants I really remembered from the audition and Hollywood Rounds. And of course, I was anxious to see what Norman Gentle would do. I expected Matt Giraud to do very well and thought Adam Lambert would pull something out. There seems to be some tight competition amongst the guys this year. On the other hand, I was still waiting for a girl to come out and really shock us with something brilliant.

At the end of the day, I’m a little disappointed as an Idol fan. I know it is against the rules for anyone from the show to help with song selection, but tonight I wish they had. The song choices were terrible for the most part. It’s sad really because I know there is some real talent in this group.

My first comment is about Norman Gentle. Yes, he is entertaining. But his performance of “And I Am Telling You” was more interesting the first AND second time we saw it. Can he not do “Norman Gentle” on another song?

My second is about Adam Lambert. This dude has a sick range. However, it still seems a bit theatrical to me. But he’s good. He was one of the only redeeming factors about tonight’s show.

Predictions for tonight are difficult for me because it was not a very good night for anyone. My guesses would be Adam Lambert, Mishavonna Henson and Allison Iraheta. The field is wide open for some surprises. Nick Mitchell could offer an upset and I would actually like to see more from Matt Giraud.

What do you think? I’d like to hear your thoughts on tonight’s show.

I think group 2 got lucky that some of the people from group 1 wasn’t in their group!!

There were at least 2 people from group 1 that would have walked away with the votes tonight!

Nobody really stood out tonight. It was actually kind of boring… and that Norman guy is getting old… fast!!

Oh my, I was just thinking tonight was one of the best episodes I have ever seen. I am pretty surprised that you panned tonight’s performances, Phil.

What a great night. For the guys I could see Norman, Kris, Matt, Kai, and Adam all make it through. Really entertaining performances by each of them.

For the girls, Allison was fabulous as was Megan and Jesse.

I was very impressed woth the performances tonight. Maybe I am in the minority though.

Nobody truely impressed me tonight. I do like Adam Lambert and I agree with Scot in that its too bad some of the people from group one weren’t in this group. I really didn’t get much from the girls either. The pretty blonde girl sang ok but what was with her freaky jerky dancing? T was very uncomfortable watching it because it seemed so “practiced” or “forced”…sorta like a nerd trying to figure out how to dance and sing at the same time. Even Ryan mentioned it afterward. I really thought the judges were going to rag on how unnatural her stage presence was. Nope…all they could see was how pretty she was and how she had the “complete package”..or whatever it was they said about her. Oh yea…and as much as “Norman” annoys me…at least he made me laugh out loud when he went down and carressed the Idol sign. Send him home though…its way past time. Overall, I was pretty disappointed in tonights show.

This night was scary bad. Honestly if every show was like this one, I believe we could brace ourselves for the sudden demise of American Idol.

It is past time to say adios to Norman/Nick whoever. Oh please send him to Last Comic Standing or something. Let him run for Senator in the state of Minnesota or something. Anything. Just not Idol.

I’m not sure any of them should go on. None of the voices were as good as a lot of the group from last week. So three will go through and maybe only one comes close to being decent enough to. Maybe Adam.

I know you cannot actually say it Phil, but let’s do a paraphrase of Henry VI and say * First, lets kill the Producers*. They puhe ot through total dreck this year to be cannon fodder for the top 36 format. Thus, we were stuck with one hour of bad singers but really nice people who it breaks our heart will see go home. I don’t like that at all.

The only person tonite who should be in the top 24 is Allison. I like Megan and Jesse in the auditions and my only thought tonite is that they were the best of the worst. I seriously was thinking of speed dialing for Norman just to mess the producers up for being such tools on this whole season.

As for Adam Lambert. I appreciate that he want to do a tribute to his mom’s favorite band. I know that Mick Jagger has an androgynous vibe. But Adam camped it up to mockery. Frankly, there was little difference between Nick/Normand’s interpretation and Adam’s interpretation.

You know, I’m starting to feel like Simon now: As he’s so fond of saying, all the performances seem utterly forgettable. So do the songs. An hour later, the only one I remember is that Norman guy, but this show is not about comedy acts. I think maybe I’ll quit watching until we’re down to the top 10.

To quote Randy, “What? What? What?” I see Randy’s 3 Adam-Lambert-whats and I raise it to 4. Personally, my faves were Allison Redhead, Mishavonna and Adam. I really was surprised by the judges’ comments for Mishavonna. I LOVED her–hers was the first performance I watched all the way through (thank you DVR gods), then I backed up and watched it again! Seriously–I was riveted. Don’t understand how they could say it wasn’t loose or young enough. Huh? She was great! Concerning Adam, at first I was embarrassed for him and even covered my face with a blanket, but as soon as the quasi Elvis impression ended, I decided I heart him and his eye liner self. Crossing fingers for Mishavexpialadotious and Adam.

I like the 16 yr old girl with bright red hair and I like the last guy of the evening….Adam I think. Other than that i was not impressed what so ever. Between the bad dancing, singing, begging, pleading and the judging, I was just plain dissappointed.

Was I the only one who thought Kris’s cover of MJ’s Man in the Mirror was pretty good? Allison and Adam shone too. Yes, Adam is theatrical, but noone else can do what he does. I didn’t like him at first because of his look, but the dude is a crazy good singer. I predict he and Danny Gokey to be the final 2.

I have to agree with Mel; I thought Mishavonna’s performance was one of the best up to that point in last night’s show and only one of two that I even watched all the way through (and ditto on the thanks to the DVR gods!). I was so-o-o-o disappointed in Matt Giraud’s performance and Kai’s. I predict the three advancing from tonight’s group will be Mishavonna, Adam, and the young redhead.

Not quite sure what’s going on this season with the song choices, but they are terrible and those that sing them are awful – a few may be exempted. If this were a drama contest – Norman would win hands down…..but it’s not. He’s gotta go.

My typos were pretty bad in my second sentence. What I meant to say is that with 36 people in the top group as opposed to what I think was 24 under the old format, we are going to get some who are not so good. In fact, some of them are just plain awful. But we start to like them personally and it makes me sad to see them get their *big break* and have it end so quickly. In fact, I suspect the producers intentionally put through some who were not so good (cannon fodder) to make sure that the ones they have pre-selected in their minds make it through. Norman for example. He is funny, he is a nice guy, but there is no way he expected to make it this far.

So far I have not enjoyed the new format. There were several from group one that are a 100 times better than what we saw last night. My call from last night will be Adam, Megan and Norman. Adam will get the #1 guy vote because he is good. Megan will get the #1 girl vote because she is pretty and has a different kind of voice. Norman will get the vote for the worst. He is kinda funny, but at this point he needs to show his vocal skills.

I thought Adam was definitely over the top with his singing but he does have the talent. Allison (she is the bright red hair teenager, Isn’t she?) her performance was pretty darn good. The blond that everyone says was the complete package?? Only if you view her from the face up! How uncomfortable was that to watch with her jerky movements? She has got to get a heck of a lot more comfortable on stage if she wants to continue. I like Mishavonna and also hope she will get a wildcard because I don’t think she probably generated enough votes to be “safe”.

The rest of the singers, Kai is a cutie and I think he can sing but with the judges panning his song, he’s probably gone. The others were in Simon’s words “unforgettable” and I truly don’t even remember what they sang, but then again I am on cold tablets!

I absolutely LOVED Mishavonna and thought she was the best of the night. I thought she was cute, young, relevant, and SANG GOOD…..2nd was Kris and 3rd was probably Allison (I love anyone who can pull off Nancy Wilson!). Everyone else, well…zzzzzzzzz I also agree it is time for Norman to be gone. If he can’t be serious, it’s time to go.

Dial Idol (for what it is worth) is predicting Adam (no surprise); Allison (no surprise) and either Jesse (Bette Davis Eyes) or Matt the piano guy in 3rd place.

Jesse is a surprise to me. Matt not so much as he has talent (except in picking songs).

We will see if they are right this week.

I found the judges comments on Mishavonna puzzling. She was fantastic.
