I can almost feel the fingers across America stretching for the voting marathon. The first 10 minutes of the show has already given the die-hard fans many reasons to debate online on who they believe is the best so far.
Adam Lambert started the day off singing “Believe” by Cher. No – that was not a typo … and yes – he did actually pull it off. Although he was my favorite from his original audition city, he has fallen off my radar. His over-the-top emotional singing isn’t really my style but at least he is making the songs work for him. Also, he will have the pseudo-angst teen vote behind him – if any of them are watching.
Next Matt Giraud played a killer “Georgia On My Mind” on the piano. I really liked it. From his first audition, he has reminded me a bit of Chris Richardson.
Jamar Rogers put his own twist on the Plain White T’s “Hey There Delilah” while his friend and one of my favorites, Danny Gokey, did an amazing rendition of “I Hope You Dance.” America is going to enjoy the storyline of these two friends making it farther into the season together. I’m sure the producers think it would make great TV also. But be forewarned … if they both make it through, they will be in the bottom two at some point during the season together. But I have a suspicion that one of them may get cut tomorrow … We shall see.
During the evening there were many who chose to sing AI alum songs. This is my wife’s biggest pet peeve. The comparison with past Idols can never be good. It must not bother the judges too much because most made it through to the top 60.
Scott Macintyre, the blind piano “genius” has finally made it back in front of the camera. He sang Chris Daughtry’s “Home.” I was expecting better from him but, since he did make it through, hopefully we will see some more footage to redeem tonight’s clip.
Kendall Beard and Alex Grace sang Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats.” Kristen McNamara did a version of Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You” and Jasmine Murray sang Jordin Spark’s “Tattoo.” All of them made it through. None of them were as good.
A couple of people really have no business being in Hollywood let alone making it to the Top 60 …
Tatiana Del Toro … really?
Norman Gentle/Nick Mitchell sang a tongue-in-cheek version of “Georgia On My Mind” as Norman. I wonder if Simon is agreeing to keep him around to the point that he will get too far to ever audition again.
Nathaniel Marshall’s offstage antics have gotten way more attention then his music and I don’t think he can recover from that. If the producers are really going make all the Idols live together, maybe they will keep him around for the drama.
Hollywood week is brutal and pressure-filled. Making contestants memorize new lyrics is one way to weed out those who will not be able to handle the live performances. Or at least it used to be …
Joanna Pacitti, the former major label signee, forgot ALL her words. Casey Carlson forgot Jordin Spark’s “Tattoo.” Stephen Fowler forgot his lyrics twice on a song he said “isn’t hard to memorize,” during footage from the night before his performance. But the judges didn’t mind and they all made it through.
Actually most people we saw tonight did make it through, including Lil Rounds (no shock there) and Michael Sarver, the Texas oil rigger. 60 of the 80 kept the dream alive … for one more day.
However, Leneshe Young, the ex-homeless teenager, Michael Castro (Jason’s brother) and rapper India Morrison did not make it to the “chair” round.
Tomorrow we will know who America will actually get to vote for!
Until then, be safe.

Warning…mean things coming now. Tatiana del throw up. Enough said.
All women not impressive.
Adam Lambert (or as I called him Helmet Head guy) great voice. Limited sex appeal. He might as well have sung Garland. Not that there is anything wrong with that but women have to have some sort of oomph to vote and he doesn’t have it for us.
Danny and Jamar. Did well. Jamar showed a quirky side I liked. Danny…get a little down and dirty and away from emo songs. Prediction (based on spoilers) Danny stays and Jamar goes.
I agree with Phil’s wife. Quit doing idol songs. Everyone.
I like the Georgia On my mind piano guy. Had forgotten him.
Scott McIntyre. I think he is in the top 20 featured so far. Not too original but no one has been yet.
Normund/Nick. Hey he makes me laugh and thats a good thing.
Nathaniel…he’s going to crash and burn in a horrid way. He is like the guy last season who refused to use the orchestra and bombed out.
Happy to see more singing. Note to producers. We don’t like Tatiana and don’t want to see more of her than we have to see.
Person I really do not get at all? Jorge from Puerto Rico. Seems ok personally but so marginally talented.
Persons I sort of like. Oil field guy. And mean looking bald guy (he is not mean I do not think he just looks like he is).
Oh lordy lordy, what can I say….just when i thought we had gotten rid of the nastiness..we still have Tatiana! She is sooooo dramatic about eeeeeeeeeeeeevverything. Geez. She and her psycho-ness need to go home and torture someone else!
Matt somebody the piano guy who sang Georgia on My Mind. WOW! I think he’s the underdog to watch. I was very impressed last night…in a way I was reminded of Eliot!
I love Carrie Underwood and her rendition of Before He Cheats, but if i hear it one more time on this show in slow motion, I am going to rip my hair out. None of them were any good!!!!! Nobody can be Carrie so they should quit now while they still have their dignity!
My short list includes: Michael (oil rig guy), Danny, Matt (piano guy), Kristin McNamara (I see her potential), Lil Rounds (has some powerful lungs), Jamar and Scott(blind piano guy). No one else really made me want to stop and listen. Hopefully someone will stand out as the show progresses.
This has been an interesting season so far…still not sure what to think.
That Tatiana girl is like fingernails on a chalkboard. Only reason I tune in is to see her smacked down — but no.
Also, what’s with that drama queen guy, the one with the headband? Gives gay people a bad name.
Phil,
I totally agree with your wife…and that is a pet peeve of mine also. I am glad you pointed that out, now only if we could get through to the AI contestants…
Love your blog!!
Nancy
Dave you took the words right out of my mouth re:Tatiana and chalkboards. Her voice is really pretty good but what a wack-o. Nathaniel what’s-his-face is her male counterpart. They both need to go. Probably Gentle dude, too. Isn’t there a comedian contest he could enter?
Loved blind man on piano and “Home”. And of course Danny Gokey. Although I don’t think his friend Jamar will make it much further. And Matt on the piano with Georgia….he was fantastic! The women aren’t impressing me yet.
So far this season I haven’t moved to the edge of my seat with excitement. Don’t know if I will. But I’ll keep watching.
I have a question. How come so many of them are singing the same songs? Do they just have a short list to choose from? I love your blog but am in need of more inside scoop.
I’ve decided that if Tatiana makes it through tonight I’m creating a myspace, facebook, and twitter page against her. She SUCKS! I don’t use that word EVER, but it’s true, there is no way that girl deserves to be there at this point…I didn’t even think she should have made it to Hollywood in the first place. I was really mad last night when she made it and she better be gone tonight or the judges are definitely losing some credibility, if not already.
Tatiana and Nick/Norman – IN, Jamar – OUT. Can someone explain to me how Tatiana made it through but Jamar didn’t? Jamar wasn’t even considered for a “sing-off”. I totally disagree with some of the judges’ choices.
