No more do-overs

images-2.jpegHow appropriate is it that when Brooke White launched into her final, tearful farewell performance on “American Idol,” she wanted to… start over?

Of course, this time, they didn’t let her. End-of-show time constraints and all. But she did try, which sort of sums up the last four “Idol” weeks for her.

Ya’ll know I love Brooke. She started out strong, had a unique, breathy voice and was a total knockout. But sadly, her confidence was knocked out somewhere around Beatles week, and we’ve been watching her self-destruct ever since.

For that reason, and that reason alone, I think she was the right choice to go. It was down to five, and someone had to.

That said, I really feel she’s more talented — and marketable — than either Syesha or David A, and I will miss her.

And now, if you’ll allow a brief David A. tangent, I’m happy to clarify my position on him for those who are miffed by my comments. Yes, of course the kid is talented. And yes, of course he’s only 17 and will get much better as he matures. But the people he’s up against are mature right now. Their performances have depth and nuance and genuine emotion. He, meanwhile, is a robotic belter, and he’s just not on their level. Should he be given special consideration for being young? And if he is, shouldn’t Brooke be given special consideration for being nervous by nature? Should Syesha be given special consideration for sorta preferring the Broadway thing? I think you see where I’m going with this.

So what do you think? Was Brooke the right one to cut? Is Syesha next? And what exactly are the rumors that got Paula so tearful and Ryan so defensive?

Ok, I usually don’t post comments on here, but I have to this one time. Denise, I just want to say I feel the same way you do about David A. The kid creeps me out! There’s just something about him that’s off. I’ve been telling my husband for so long that I think maybe that whole “I almost lost my voice due to some disease” might have been something his dad told him to make up so he’d get profiled during the auditions! Remember that??? And I remember falling for it & I actually kinda liked the kid in the beginning! I wonder if it’s even true…but anyway! I’m kinda over AI & I don’t know why I watch it anymore. Blake was my fave last season & he didn’t win. I really like David Cook & I hope he wins…he probably won’t. Overall, I’m just kinda bored w/ the whole show & all the filler. I really wouldn’t watch if it wasn’t for DVR & being able to fast-forward through all the crap. I’m glad I didn’t miss out on the Paula slip-up & all the awkwardness that followed. That was interesting. Ok, so enough rambling. I really enjoy reading your posts. Thanks for always saying what most of us are thinking. Don’t feel like you have to justify your feelings about David A.

*Sobs*!!! Well, I wish Syesha had sashayed out of there tonight (that girl is like Hillary Clinton…she never quite goes away and most of us want her to)but I had prepared myself to lose Brooke. Jason’s Dreadheads were doing double time last night to punish Paula for her mistake. At least next week I can relax and not worry about Brooke getting nervous.

David Archuleta did have a paralyzed vocal cord. However, if I remember what I read correctly, it happened while he was in the middle of competing in Star Search and his vocal coach helped him work out of it. So..I’m thinking it may not have been quite as serious as we were led to believe as the guy went on to win the competition despite his affliction.

There were two rumors on the boards today about Paula…one that she was drunk or stoned on meds, the other that she is on her way out as a judge. Don’t know which ones Ryan was referring to.

Normally I don’t enjoy the group number that night but Jason and/or Cookie really should have sung Cracklin Rosie last nite. They both gave me goose bumps!

Brooke was music in the purest form and a talent that brought fresh air to the competition this year. It was an incredible ride for her and I have to agree with Randy’s comments a few weeks ago; I could just envision Brooke sitting at her piano as a little girl dreaming of everything the last few months has brought into her life. To make the top 5 with her level of performance anxiety is pretty miraculous. She was never really going to win, but I for one am very pleased that we got to meet the talented girl named Brooke White.

Sorry folks, but I disagree with what happened tonight on the show. Vinnie Barbarino wannabe Jason Castro does not have the voice, talent or anything else to carry him beyond the Idol competition and it was a mistake not to send him packing tonight. He ruined the two Neil Diamond songs he picked, and tonight, he was just horrible with “Cracklin’ Rosie” opening the show. His voice is not the kind sells records, at least not the kind I buy, and I think his ‘dreadlocks’ are icky-looking and I keep wanting to put his head in a bucket and wash those things out, give him a haircut and a good hair-style and see what is left over.

Brooke White, nerves, start-overs, and all was still a better talent than Jason will ever be. And it is a shame that we couldn’t see what the next couple of weeks would have in store for her.

David Cook has this thing in the bag, provided he doesn’t do something really stupid in the couple of weeks. He will be in competition with Archuleta for the title, but I think he will get Idol championship because of his maturity and the fact that David A. is only seventeen and has a lot of years left ahead of him.

What is all the hatred for Neil Diamond about. Everywhere I read that he was the wrong choice for a mentor. Show me someone as good as Neil that has been in the business 45 plus years, and still sells out concerts around the world on a moments notice. He is a driving force today in music as much as he was 10, 20 or even 30 years ago. I thought he was the perfect choice for the final mentor and I hope they invite him back again soon.

I am a huge fan of David Archuleta. This competition is about talent accompanying popularity and personality. His heartfelt performances are not related to age. Just close your eyes and listen to his music, especially studio versions. Forget about his young looks. His silk smooth voice makes people cry because it transfers inner heart.

Some people say that he doesn’t have a personality or character. His genuiness, sincerity, honesty, not acting crazy, not showing off extreme, these are his personality, which many people love. Just who he is. No acting involved.

Like today’s elimination show, I kept following him at the end of show trying to see his reaction to Brook’s elimination. Because they were best friends among remaining contestants. I couldn’t see him well because he kept hiding himself behind people. The truth is that he didn’t want to show he was crying. That is David. He is sincerely sad when his friend leaves. Don’t hate him for who he is.

Of course, “the people he’s up against are mature (more like older)right now”, but the true outcomes of this competition show years later in a long term. People saw something from him to make money. I can say whole column about that, but you guess. Maybe he is not your type now, but he is getting older and his music will change too. I am so glad that I witness this young man and how his presence influences so many people regardless of age. I did a whole lot of reseach on him. Yes, he is too good to be true. And he is true.

Hi Joshua, I agree with you. Shoudn’t an american idol be one who will go on and impact lives with his music and his beliefs. I find it truly disturbing that people will call David creepy… especially adults and I am just wondering if Nicole has any kids. Cos I think fi you do, you would want him to grow up like David… pure and well mannered, everyone he meets will probably go… wow h’s parents relaly brought him up well…

Did you know the song he sang :You’re the Voice was chosen because he was flown in to sing after the columbine shootings and his view of gun control and the trauma the victijms faced were engraved so much in his heart that he felt since he had a platform that he should take it and use it for a message in gun control…

When his neighbour was so pregnant, that David in his younger years would volunteer to rake her leaves and wouldn’t take a dime. He went back 2-3 times after to keep raking and didn’t even ring her doorbell to trouble her

Now Brooke… he saw how the last time he cried during Alexandrea’s elimination, how the focus became him instead of her and tonight, he gestured to Syesha to cover him most likely becasue he did not want to take away her moment…

Yes.. David is immature and perhaps have a long way to go to persuade you to ever buy his CD… but frankly his core is the thing that makes him stand out so brightly and why alot of his fans are voting hard to keep him in despite some of his performances not being as good as the expecations get…

To me… he’s a fresh breath in the entertainment industry where big egos, vanity, sex, money, drugs rule. You have a choice what kind of children you want to bring into the world.. but since when being good becomes a BAD… in my opnion that is a very sad relaity of a decaying society

By the way I am somehwat in the industry… can I tell you how much I *rolled* my eyes when I had the opportunity with work with an ex idol who is simply revered in America now… guess what the self procliamed “family man”was - the biggest sleazebag and put it this way… has ” Octopus hands “and few regard for discretion.

How typical… could have used the platform to do alot of good… be a voice… but sadly like most people who join american idol.. is it for the love of singing or for the opportunity to be able to impact the world … nope… fame, fortune, drugs, sex, women…

And people ask me how could I be this devoted to seeing David Archuleta win this.. cos I beleive when it comes to making a difference and helping to make the world a better place… that he would at least TRY…

I really loved Brooke’s style, but though Sayesha would go before her. I think next week it will be Sayehsa & Jason in the botton two. Looks like David & David are heading for the finale.

I was hoping Syesha would go first. She does have a great voice, but I don’t like her. Brooke has a great voice and I think she is genuinely nice. So both things considered…

And on the David A thing. I think he is good. But every single songs sounds exactly the same, so I don’t put him in the same league as David Cook or even Syesha for that matter. If this was a contest on who’s nicest, Brooke would still be there too. I think that close-your-eyes-while-you-sing-heartfelt” thing is partly what makes him creepy. I was glad Andrew Lloyd Weber told him to open his eyes. Hes done that more and is less creepy to me.

I liked Brooke a lot, but when it’s down to 5, those “do-overs” had to come back and bite her. Jason will probably be next to go, although I like him, too.

Missy - just to clear up your Columbine statement. As a Columbine survivor myself, I can assure you that David Archuletta was not flown in to sing his song. He did sing for some anti-gun charity that, like most anti-gun groups, used the Columbine shootings as a platform to get their message out. Maybe he had adopted his anti-gun “platform” at age 7, but he never came to Littleton to sing about it.

It’s fascinating to me, by the way, how many people don’t like Cook because of his hair! Or because he looks dirty! Really? You like David A better because he puts on a polo shirt? And is clean? That’s weird.

All I can say is ARGGGHHHHHHH! I wish Sayesha would have gone before Brooke but we all know that neither one of them would have made it to the finals because of the strength of the male vocals this year. I still don’t know how Jason skirted the bottom 2 last night but the agony of each week is now over for Brooke and I have no doubt that she will find a life as a recording artist. I have said it before and will say it again. Most of the AI title winners with the exception of Kelly and Carrie are now no where to be heard (at least not on the radio). Not winning the title is probably a good thing.

    This cracked me up:

Memaw - maybe that’s why we haven’t seen the AI winners do anything … it’s the long-term. Gotcha. ;)

I’m done with AI! Carly was by far the best vocalist and because there are people out there voting for the worst idol, Jason will probably win. I’ve been saying he is Vinnie Barbarino for weeks now. He thinks he’s cute by acting stupid. David A has been trained on everything from how to look, how to sing, what movements to make. Nothing seems natural. In five or ten years, he will be great if he gets a mind of his own. If he’s anti gun, I’m anti David A. Brooke is great but her ego got the best of her. Syesha is great but for some reason, everyone hates her. David Cook sounds like every other alternative rocker. No Carly was the best but people go off of looks or their personal “struggles” or sappy life and not on talent.

Denise, I feel that Brooke and David A. should have both been gone a long time ago.

The judges used to tear into contestants when you flubbed the words and usually the contestant was G-O-N-E that same week. David A. did it the first week and Brooke did it not once, but TWICE.

So yes, I think she was the right choice.

I totally agree with your comments for once. You are finally getting it. David A, is terrible, as is Syesha. Neither one can sing on key for a whole song. We all knew Brooke’s time was coming, but her voice was so much better than either of them, and she can carry a tune. Syesha and David A, are the only 2 that can’t play an instrument, and do nothing but stand there and try to sing. David A is so creepy, that is why ALW told him to keep his eyes open. Michael, Carly and David C. are the true talents, and are the true performers, and it is a total shame that 2 of them are gone. David A is certainly not even in the same league as David C, and he needs to go home. Even Jason has a better voice than he does. I would buy a record by Jason, NEVER by David A. He is a total flake, and alot of it probably is from what that father has him doing. This little boy act he puts on every week, is getting very old, he certainly didn’t act like this before. America needs to wake up and see what he is, and what he is doing. If you let him snow you, then God help you in important matters.

Well said, Denise. David Arugula can indeed sing, but he’s a kid who thinks great singing is all about mimicking Stevie Wonder for every single song. He does not interpret songs in a convincing way because he lacks any sort of grown-up perspective.

Brooke wore her heart on her sleeve right to the end and I appreciated what appeared to be true emotion, flubs and all. She’ll be fine, although I don’t see her being a big star after this unless she turns out to be a gifted songwriter as well.

As for the rest, the exit order doesn’t seem very interesting now. Unless David Cook starts biting off chicken heads onstage or something, he’s the winner.

Is American Idol turning into an Up With People contest? Missy… while I’m sure David A. is very sweet and pure of heart… that has absolutely nothing to do with who should win this competition. The same can be said for those who are bothered by David C.’s scruffy looks… seriously, who cares? It SHOULD be about what each contestant does with the music they choose each week… which makes David C., hands down, the winner. But, I was/am a Michael fan, so what do I know?!

I believe that the young age limit for Idol should be raised to 19. It almost seems abusive to let a 17 year old junior in high school be subjected to the vile criticism that David A is being pounded by. Although really no one deserves to have their spirits crucified in the manner that some bloggers are doing.

Could I suggest that maybe SOME of you need to get a life? and a heart while you’re at it?

Jason is absolutely the worst. Looks terrible, needs a hair cut, needs talent.
Brooke was on her way out - too bad becasue she has talent but is insecure as all get-out.
David A. is being strung along to bolster the show’s ratings. He doesn’t “have it” despite what the judges say. Obviously it’s a show and its scripted as Paula’s “mistake” proves.
Syesha is really fun to watch perform, so what’s so bad about that? She sings well and has talent. I don’t see the negatives here.
David C. is the winner already regardless of much else that happens. He has the hollywood persona and will fit right in to the music world. Too bad really in a way because he may succumb to the sleazy side of the business as well. Time will tell, but somebody’s going to make a lot of money off his talent.

    hawkmama, I totally agree.

It does seem abusive to push your child into an industry that is notoriously harsh and subject him to the criticism that will inevitably come. And to think - he’s been doing this since he was 7!

Except, it wasn’t AI’s fault back then. Who else could we hold responsible for crucifying David’s spirit? (hint: the answer is not the commenters here)
