‘Dream On’ outta here

michael.jpgLet that be a lesson to all you hot Australian men out there tempted to launch an asinine scarf trend on a national singing competition.

Seriously, though, I think it goes without saying that tonight’s elimination was totally insane. No, Michael Johns was not the most talented of the bunch. But he’s far more talented and appealing than about half the people who just outlasted him.

I never thought he’d get too far, what with his limited range and one-pony rock star act. But I at least thought he’d outlast the obvious offenders like KLC and Syesha.

Still, I didn’t think tonight was his night, and his premature ejection was odd for a lot of reasons.

Did it seem to anyone else that Ryan was PARTICULARLY pleased with Thursday’s surprise eviction? There was genuine glee in his voice as he informed poor MJ that even though they gave all the contestants a pass on last year’s “Idol Gives Back” week, he wouldn’t be afforded the same courtesy. Now get OUT, tall hot guy!

Also, how did Michael go from never being in the bottom three to being kicked out over much less talented competitors in just one week?

I know, I know. These things happen at this point in the competition. SOMEONE has to go, after all, but don’t we all know who those someones are? Until they’re gone, no more kicking off the good guys. Ya hear?

So what did you think? Why is Michael gone? Did he even care? And how awkward was it when Brooke accidentally admitted she was planning to stay past Saturday?

I was really shocked and saddened to see Michael Johns go. I really liked him because he was unique. Didnt sound karaoke-ish. He kinda went his own way and did his thing. Like you Denise, I didnt think he’d win it…but I didn’t expect him to go before some of the others. All I kept thinking was…this is most likely a blessing for his career. Now he won’t be saddled with the contract the winners get tied up with. He’ll be more able to pursue his own dreams and not the dreams of the “american Idol Machine” so to speak.

Well, due to lack of sleep last night waiting for the news that my great nephew was born hale and hearty, I napped this evening and didn’t watch the show. I am also shocked at Michael Johns. The only explanation I can think is people are now seriously voting for their very favorites and he is not a very favorite of most people. Still, that KLC and Syesha are still there amazes me. Someone noted the show was getting boring and really, Michael Johns was one of about 4 people I looked forward to seeing every week. Who was in the bottom three this week?

I am just floored at Michael’s ouster. His looks alone should have kept him in the competition for at least a couple more weeks, let alone his wonderful singing voice. I never did get a busy signal when I voted for him Tues. night, so I guess that was a sign. I thought he had talent, personality & style that most of the others don’t have. Hopefully he will get a contract anyway & go on to a great career. And yes, I thought it was rather mean of Ryan to point out that last year they didn’t eliminate anyone on Idol Gives Back week, but this year it was, “Johns, you’re outta here!”

MJ is gone and that is a true shame. Was he going to win it??? No, but that was all right because he is a nice piece of eye candy! But did he deserve to go before Syesha and KLC??? Absolutely not! How those 2 can still be around tells you that the world of AI is not perfect. I have NEVER been a fan of Seacrest but he is a rude SOB. I’ll take Simon over Ryan any day.

    I, too, am shocked at Michael Johns’ elimination. The only thing that makes sense is, because of a less than stellar performance by David Cook this week, more people were voting for him in order to ensure he stays in the competition. I truly doubt the ascot did MJ in. Personally, I think he looks hot no matter what he wears <:}

I agree with the other post-ers that Michael Johns was easy on the eyes and had a great voice. Sorry to see him go, but I honestly don’t know how much longer I can watch Ryan Seacrest. He nauseates me. Thank goodness for dvr…I’ll take Simon any day of the week!

It was definitely a shocker, Paula’s face was totally shocked. Does anyone wonder what Randy and Paula was chatting in his ear – was it assuring MJ that he will be picked up by a record producer. I hope so cause he was one of my favorites, unlike dread lock kid.

Shame, Shame,Shame! Shame on AI, Shame on Seacrest. Was Seacrest jealous of Michael Johns because MJ is far more hotter and better looking than him so he taunted him? I used to like Seacrest but no more. No more because he is such a jerk and is hiding his sexual orientation as he is so afraid that his image will be ruined. Look at Michael Johns. He is a real talent, stuck on his gun and did not hide the fact that he was married as it would cost him his popularity and losing fans. He is one of the most natural singer since Kelly Clarkson. He looks as good as a super star from the beginning without any stylist help and extra make up. His voice is better than Keith Urban. His emotion is raw and deep. He will definitely sell millions and millions of records more than any AI winners!

There was a power outage at my house last night so I didn’t get to watch the results show. Apparently there was also a phone outage in America that caused voters to not be able to vote for Michael Johns. I just could not believe that Syesha and Carly made it through another week, especially with Carly’s horrid performance last week.

Shocked is not the right word… Dare I say, “Daughtreyed?” That’s what happened to MJ and me. I’m getting bored. Simon is the most entertaining person on the show at the moment, because he makes me laugh. Ryan is pond scum. Never have liked him much. Best of luck to Michael. He’s very talented and should get a record deal with out AI strings attatched.

I thought Ryan said those things because the contestants were frozen in place and the crowd sounded as if it would take the stage in revolt. I quit watching the year they voted Daughtry off too early. While I’m surprised this time, I’ll hang in there for a while yet —unless they vote off Brook & Jason before S & K.

Sorry, I have to disagree. Johns did not have a better voice than any of the others still on the show. He was a one trick pony, getting by on his looks and charm and ‘Dream On’ was stretching his genre of “operatic rock ballads that sound great with an Australian accent”. KLC has actually done very well the last couple weeks, in case some of you are FFing through her performances out of habit. She was one of my “most likely to be Tivo-skipped” performers early in the season, but has been at least mid-pack recently. Thanks in large part to being able to select actual country songs and not being forced to convert Beatles songs. An experiment that I think we can all agree was a dismal failure. But it is that time in the season where the elimination bus starts to catch up with the good-not-great singers in a seemingly random order, so expect KLC and Syesha to follow Johns over the next couple of weeks.

    As for the others:
Brooke is starting to show the strain of being in the spotlight. She doesn’t appear to be the type that enjoys attention and it might be starting to beat her up a little.

Jason did an amazing version of ‘over the rainbow’ and gave credit to the original arrangement. Certainly the most unique performer that is left but will probably not win because of his niche appeal.

David C. mailed it in this week and knew it. I expect him to come back next week with a strong performance after looking a little scared during eliminations.

David A. continues to use the same song each week, what? They aren’t the same song? Could have fooled me, they sound the same.

Carly just has something about her that seems to turn people off. She has a great voice, but it seems like she can’t quite get in a groove and you have to wonder how much of that is trying too hard.

Love the blog Denise, and never miss your column.

I believe it had more to do with the dreaded “I have to sing first” curse than anything else. That first spot is a virtual lock for bottom 3. I honestly thought the version he sang AFTER being voted off was his best performance of the year. Had a nice “up-yours” attitude with it.

Brooke needs to quit playing not to lose (kinda like Kansas vs. Memphis with 9 minutes left).

The whole tattoo obsession with Carly (not just her arm but her husband) is why we are so weirded out and her days are numbered IMHO.

Right now I see Cook v Archuleta in the finals.

    All the best!

I am sickened to loose Michael, he was one of the true performers on the show this year. He should have been in the final 2 with David C. I don’t know if I will watch anymore after this, especially with Syesha and David A, still in there. I just can’t stand to watch them. I truly hope Michael does a Daughtry, as he certainly can pull it off. I guess America just wants a teenybopper contest, but it is really bad, when that is what it has become.

He shouldn’t be gone yet, even though I don’t think he would take #1 or #2, but this can be a very good thing for him as he won’t be stuck with the Idol contract and can quite possibly get something better. Go Michael!!!

I really am considering not watching AI anymore. This is absolutely ludicrous. Brooke’s BORING “You’ve Got a Friend” and Syesha’s wannabe Fantasia “I Believe” wins out over Michael Johns? Whatever. Whatever happened to talent? This has become a popularity contest or a case of too many people voting for the worst, like Sanjaya last year.

  21. Posted April 11, 2008 at 10:29 am | Permalink

Denise, in your opening comments you talk about contestants with no talent. ALL of these contestants are extremely talented. Maybe not talented enough to sing in your church choir, or wherever you perform that makes you such an expert. You come across to me like a person who gets bored and dissatisfied with anything after a while.

Micheal Johns had limited range? Wrong again. If you want to talk about no range, try Brooke. I believe your dislike for Syesha is a personality issue, because she has been good the last 2 weeks. The competition is at a point where somebody very good is going to be ousted every week now. Better get on your phone if you don’t want it to be your favorite.

I’m totally bummed that MJ is gone… not even sure I’ll watch anymore. Denise.. I completely agree with you that this eilimination was “odd”. I couldn’t quit pinpoint it but when you mentioned Ryan’s glee, I thought… bingo! I wouldn’t be at all surprised to hear about something controversial coming out of this elimination.

And for the record.. Michael was NOT a “one trick pony”… I would actually use that term to better describe Jason (always emo/alternative) and David A (always light pop ballads). Michael’s “genre” was not limited to “operatic rock ballads” By my count, he only sang two… Light my Fire and WATC! Plus… one of his best performances was a bluesy version of a COUNTRY song… “It’s all Wrong”! No one is arguing that he has the best voice, because he doesn’t… but his voice has depth and soul… intangibles that will help him become a star.

I didn’t really care for Michael Johns too much and I really didn’t like him doing Aerosmith. I think it was time, however, I don’t care for Carly and I thought she was worse than Michael Tuesday night.

    Posted April 11, 2008 at 11:14 am | Permalink

My face mirrored Paula’s when they announced that Syesha and Carly were safe. I was … dumbfounded … that Michael was eliminated. Although I really liked his performance better last night than Tuesday, I know he was following Aerosmith going into the high range at the end on Tuesday and honestly I think that might have done him in.

As for what’s left, I LOVE David Cook. I still don’t know if he will win it, but I predict we will be buying his records someday! Carly is a good singer, but I just can’t see her winning it. Brooke I like because she’s unique, but she’s really not consistant. David Archelleta … sorry (as Simon would say) … just don’t think he has “it”. Jason is charming and should be on a soap, but don’t know if he is an “Idol”, but look at other “idols” and guess he really couldn’t be worse than them! Syesha just has a quality … that “divaness” that I can’t stand. KLC really has been singing better, country is her genre, but what she needs to change is her attitude (even though it was better this week).

All I can say is GO DAVID C. By the way, part of the reason I think he didn’t seem to perform as well this week is that the song was (at least to me) not as familiar. When I went to the AI site and listened to it a few more times, I actually begin to kinda like his performance.

Go David C! Go David C! Go David C!

Even though I think he has more talent than others that remain, it doesn’t surprise me. Why? When he sang “Dream On”, at the end of the song, he started screaming. When he started that, I told my wife that he just burried himself.
Last night when he sang it again, he didn’t scream. I told my wife that if he would have sang that version, he wouldn’t be in the position he is in.

I am just trying to figure out how that Castro guy who sang “Over the Rainbow” wasn’t in the bottom 3. My dog was howling over that!!

Wow!…what a “mixed” bunch of comments and one sort of rude one (you know who you are).

Denise…always enjoy reading your column and blog.

Shocking is the only way to describe what happened last night. MJ might not be the best but he does have that certain “something” going for him although HOT does not a star make no matter who SHE or he is. But I think MJ had more going for him than that. I think Michael was totally flabbergasted by being outsted and SOME of the judges were too!

I have NEVER like Ryan Seacrest from the very beginning. I think he is an irritating, tantrum throwing, little snot. (how’s that for blunt?) I have wished since season one that he would be gone. I agree with whoever said Simon is way better than Seacrest.

Oh, by the way, congradulations Monica on the addition to the family.

I am now half afraid that David C. and one or two others may be voted out. I swore I would never watch AI again after the Taylor Hicks debacle…but I guess I am just too curious.

At least we have some “excitement” in wondering what will happen next I guess.

And the truth is…that the show isn’t going to make these people stars (although being on the show helps). Their fate is now in their own hands. Those who want it…need to go for it.

I too was shocked when I saw that MJ was in the bottom three. I thought, surely they have just wasted our time tonight and won’t eliminate anyone. After all, MJ in the bottom three??? Come on! Kristy Lee and Syesha should to long before him. As well as Carly. But, as many of you have said, it’s probably a blessing for him. Now he can go out and get a record contract and I’m sure he’ll do quite well on his own. I’d certainly buy his CD. We haven’t seen/heard the end of Michael Johns.

Perhaps KLC has made it so far because she’s the featured Idol on VoteForTheWorst.com, a website aimed at getting a pool of votes for what they call the most “entertaining” contestants. These are the ones who annoy the public and the judges and producers the most.

Up until this week I have thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone’s opinions. It has always been very civil and no one called anyone stupid or clueless or suggested they had no talent. We all have different musical tastes (I loved Amanda but I was in the minority of one on that point) but we have all been respectful of each others opinions. I hope that that does not change and I really resent people taking pot shots at our blog hostess. As one who as tried to do her job, let me tell you…its a lot harder and more creative to come up with something clever each and every week about these people than it is to call someone stupid or clueless. I mean even David Archuleta cannot come up with something original any week. Just give your opinion about the talent and leave the rest of us out of it, please.
