Now, someone help me remember… When “Idol” gave back last year, didn’t they include an elimination at the end, causing for some terribly uncomfortable moments??
I can’t recall exactly, but I think they did, and if I’m right, thank goodness the producers wised up. Hollywood Excess and starving children are already an awkward enough combo. I’d hate to add a weeping-cuz-she’s-in-the-bottom-three Brooke White to the mix.
At any rate, I watched the show… sort of. I actually watched it with my finger firmly pressed on the fast-forward button, stopping only when I saw a star who interested me. For the record, I stopped:
*For part of Miley Cyrus and for a few seconds of her “banter” with Billy Crystal.
*For most of Fergie (at least long enough to watch her excellent Ann Wilson impersonation AND her amazing double front-walkover trick.
*For two seconds of the finalists’ “Rent” ditty.
*For all of Teri Hatcher and her all-star backup band. Hilarious.
*For all of Jimmy Kimmel and my personal heroine, Sarah Silverman. Though, sorry, I thought she was really trying to crack a joke about malaria. Normally, you see, she would.
*For all of Brad Pitt. Duh.
Okay, that’s about it. I’m truly glad that “Idol” is giving back, but I’ll be glad when they get back to kicking people off.
See you tomorrow.

If I remember correctly, last year they played it up like there was going to be an elimination but then right at the last minute they ended up saying they “didnt want to eliminate anyone tonight”, or something to that effect. It was all hyped like it usually is and they kept narrowing it down to fewer and fewer contestants then at the end they ended up letting both people stay. Anyway, thats how I remember it.
That’s right. They played it up and then let them all through to the next week. The week after “Gives Back” Phil Stacey and Justin Timberwannabe were both eliminated in the same week.
Ok, one thing to clear up before my idol diatribe begins, I have no qualms about raising money for children. Everything mentioned last night was a good cause, but it almost felt like they were exploited….hum…And how many times did we have to hear that stupid phone number?
But anyway, here are my “observations” and comments.
1. Why the heck is Mariah Carey allowed to do anything anymore?
2. Was this Miley Cyrus night or what? I thought the show was “Idol Gives Back”…can we give her back?
3. Eliminate those dreaded group songs….didn’t everyone look uncomfortable? And what the heck is up with the white outfits? Never never never….there are no words to discribe that!
4. Robin Williams….how does someone even respond to that? Obvious filler??? And he grabbed Simon’s butt…what the heck!?!? That guy is not ok.
5. Daughtry…I was sad that their performance wasn’t live….but I love them anyway.
6. If every star that was on there gave a million dollars, the show would have been over before it even began! Please spare us from this whole ordeal next year!!! Show them the money!
7. Is Brad Pitt ok? Something was off about him, but boy did he sure look good!
8. Band From TV….they weren’t great by any means….but I liked them! They had more personality and entheusiasm than the whole show….James Denton…Bachelor Bob….Terri Hatcher…some guys from House….intreging! Scary yet lovable.
9. Fergie and Carrie Underwood…actually were ok…kinda blah though.
10. Last but not least….one more comment about Simon’s “man boobs” and I was going to scream.
Its sad to say that beyond that, I don’t really remember much of the show. It just seemed like a big ratings grabber and money maker. Thank goodness tonight we can get back to our normal routine and be done.
I found it interesting that the UK gave $200 million dollars, but our government does nothing, except bomb people. So many of the people being helped by this fund drive, are in the USA, but they don’t care. Just like when Reagan buried his head in the sand on the whole HIV/AIDS issue, so much of this problem might have been adverted if only he had paid attention. Britain is looking better and better all the time.
I loved Robin Williams’ skit - that’s what makes him who he is. Love him.
It is pretty audacious for people who make millions upon millions of dollars a year to ask the rest of the US who averages 48k a year to donate as much as they can.
If each one of them lived like the average person does and donated the rest there would be no poverty in the US or possibly the world.
What liberal b.s. Chris! There is nothing wrong with acquiring wealth, and how do you know people who make millions upon millions don’t give back? It’s our ability to acquire wealth, that allows us to give back. It’s a win-win situation. You don’t allow people to acquire wealth, there is no chance they can give back.
If you don’t have money, how can you give money?
I have to kind of laugh. I was home all evening, but knowing how it would be I just taped the show and watched it when it was over, I think I got through what I wanted to see in 30 minutes (actually, most of what I actually watched is on Denise’s list!!!). My favorite thing was Heart with a bit of Fergie thrown in. Second favorite was the Teri Hatcher thing….tooo funny!!! Most of the rest of it, including Miley Cyrus, I could have done without.
Bring on the elimination show and let’s get back to business.
i completely agree with mr.likesidol.
sounds like chris is more into communism than democracy.
The point I’m trying to get across is - all of these celebrities that pull in loads of money get on TV and advocate sending our hard-earned money to a different country when they’re wasting their money on gold teeth and thousands of dollars worth of jewelry for their little dogs. I am hardly a communist, I actually lean quite right. I just have a problem with people who make more money in a year then I will ever make in my life tell me how to spend what little discretionary funds I have. Especially when gas and food prices are skyrocketing. People are free to be as rich as they want, congrats, they earned it, just don’t tell me how to spend what I make. If they find the situation so appauling, they can far better afford to fix it than I can.
Didn’t watch it this year. In fact, I’m not watching any elimination nights this year. I just tune in on competition night and look around to see who’s no longer there, kind of like the tribe that doesn’t go to tribal council the previous night.
If Idol really wants to give back, let them give back their money.
