Was it just me or did this show go on…and on…and on? I am a Beatles fan, and will even admit I am old enough to remember watching their first appearance on Ed Sullivan. So I don’t much like the melodies being reworked. And I didn’t like much of what I saw tonight, including Simon in his too-tight muscle shirt. That may explain why he seemed grumpier than usual.
If I had to name a best performance, I would have to go with Carly Smithson. And as you all know she is not a favorite of mine, so you know how disappointed I was in the show tonight. For once she sang something but loud, at least at first, although she reverted to loud at the end. My second favorite was the hottie in disguise, David Cook. I didn’t get that voice box thing in the middle. I thought his microphone went out! But otherwise, I liked his version of Daytripper. My tie for third will go to Brooke and Jason. Both of them seemed too self-conscious of their performance for the first time, and to me that took away a lot of the charm and grace they had in earlier performances. Still, I was smiling all through both of their songs and not just waiting for them to end.
And no, I’m not forgetting David the golden boy. A sweet kid and he sings beautifully, but talk about a one trick pony. The minute he gets away from “really sensitive” songs, he has problems. His song had too many “oh oh oh” trill notes in it for me to call it, as Simon did, masterful. To me, he is as predictable as Amanda. I thought she did fine too, but not an earthshaking performance. It was interesting to see her show a bit more personality in interacting with the judges. And if Simon is as consistent as he has been this season, the minute she does sing a ballad, he will tell her to stick with what she does best.
The judges seemed taken by Syesha Mercado. With Randy and Simon, I suspect it was her decision to take advantage of her other gift, the cleavage. I can only think her low cut top was an effort to get more votes from men. She was fine singing Yesterday, but why did I think she was thinking as she sang: “Why did I have to blow my last performance so bad when the day before yesterday I was really hot stuff?” With that I finally realized why I don’t like her. She just thinks she is so hot!
I thought both Michael Johns’ and Chikezie’s arrangements were disjointed messes. I want Michael and Chikezie to do well but somehow (except for Chikezie last week) they always disappoint. I must agree though, that when Chikezie can get some energy into an arrangement he is at his best. Ramiele tried to liven it up for a change from last week. She was cute and hit some good strong notes, but I have to agree with Simon that her song choice was not good and it was a bit high school musical theater. I kept expecting her to have a cane in hand and bounce her little hat off of it.
And finally, will Kristy Lee Cook just hide her voice away? She kept her eye popping and nose scrunching to a minimum tonight, but once again that heavy, off key, twangy arrangement coupled with her rocking on one foot was just too painful to watch. Paula summed it up perfectly when she said, “You look gorgeous tonight”.
So I can only hope that Kristy will be sent home this week and that my favorites, David Cook, Brooke White and Jason Castro come back strong next week.
Denise, I hope you are having a great vacation, and thank you for letting me be your understudy this week.
Now I must get to my not pink cell phone and start voting!

Great job Monica! I agree with it all.
Love your comments, Monica. I remember the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, too. Wasn’t that excitement at its best???
Yeah, one night of the Beatles on Idol was enough. And I am a Beatles fan. For the most part tonight felt redundant and uncomfortable. Enough, already. I did love little David Archuleta’s Long and Winding Road. Almost makes me feel like last week was an attempt on his part to dumb down his performance and level the playing field, because this week he definitely rose above the competition. Really impressive stuff. And I love love loved David Cook’s Day Tripper. Don’t know why Simon didn’t but who can figure him out. Of the rest of the guys, Jason Castro was okay but not great. I still like Chikeze but didn’t love his performance all that much…. It was just a little weird. He should be banned from ever touching a harmonica again. Michael Johns was kind of boring. He wasn’t as bad as last week, although for the life of me I can’t remember either song.
The women…. What can I say? I can definitively without hesitation say that it is time for Amanda to go home. Now. Oh my gosh that was ugly. She’s done. It’s over. Don’t let the door hit her where the Good Lord split her. Puhleeze. Carly was a little better than I expected. I almost liked her. Ditto Syesha. I actually did like her Yesterday. She made it her own and looked quite comfortable doing it. Kristy Lee was forgettable but better than last week. Her voice is pretty nice and she did look good. What did she sing? Hmmmm. As much as I love Brooke, she was a sub-par tonight. Her voice was as beautiful as ever and she was gracious and sweet, but the song choice was wrong and then there was the…. Dancing? Was that dancing? Ramiele has a lovely voice but she just looked extremely uncomfortable and robotic to me. I don’t know, maybe I’m just in a mood or something. I was disappointed with most of the show. I can’t even predict who’ll be……. Oh wait a minute…. AMANDA. PUHLEEZE. Show her the door.
Amanda sounds the same week after week after week after week…oh, sorry I just got on the same word after word! Kristy Lee…the only good thing was as Paula said, she looked beautiful but this is a singing contest NOT a fashion contest. Kristy Lee SHOULD go home this week she is the consistently weakest contestant. I love David Cook (I’m not a young girl, I’m in my late 40’s)so don’t think I’m a little groupie. I think Brooke has became my favorite female singer but please, no more woooooo’s in the middle of the song. Brooke please go back to the guitar or piano so we don’t have to see you so awkward on stage.
I totally wasn’t getting Simon last night, and I usually have a tendency to agree with a lot of what he has to say. I haven’t been a big Carly fan, but I absolutely LOVED her version of Blackbird. I also thought David Cook was great as well. I sometimes wonder if what WE hear, is different from what THEY hear.
I agree Kristy should go. Chikezie needs to seriously lose the harmonica, and Brook, I have to agree should go back to playing an instrument while she sings. She is just obviously far too uncomfortable without one. I love her voice and singing style, but watching her was awkward last night.
Monica,
Good job! How appropro the title was! Maybe that was one of the worst nights ever?!?
Okay…yes Syesha did a good job on her song AND exposing her other assets. But she still does not have “star” quality…that goes for Ramiele (as cute as she is!).
I just don’t get Amanda…I am convinced she can do better. Her words are mumbled and her vocal techniques leave me cold.
David Archuleta…I think he connects and he does have a smooth voice…he sings on key and he has a sense of the words.
Guys, Carly has pipes and knows how to use them. Maybe people don’t like her songs…but she has a voice AND ability. I think she is a star.
I love Jason no matter what he does. Last night not his best. But even when he is “detached” from the song…there is something to some of his notes and the way he sings that is just plain unique.
David Cook caught me three performances ago and I am his hook, line and sinker. I did not like him at all in the beginning.
Okay…know I am reiterating what many have already said…but it’s good to talk to someone other than the TV.

Tho I really like the Beatles, it’s getting a bit old and some of the singers are really butchering the songs. Amanda never changes her style - always screaming and running around on stage….gotta go. Kristy needs to go too. Have a feeling it’s her nite to end her journey. Jason - the young Travolta - is soooooo good. My guess is Brooke & Carly in the top two.
I thought most of the girls were pretty forgetable. I too felt just plain uncomfortable watching Brooke sing. I did enjoy her last week but I agreed with the judges that she picked the wrong song. I did like Carly. The rest of the women pretty much bored me. I really love David Cook. He’s got his own sound. His voice doesn’t just sound like a nice male voice singing a nice song. He’s unique and seems to have just the right amount of “humility”. Not too arrogant. I like David Archuleta but am wondering about his ability to expand his “style”. I agree he seems to be mostly a ballad singer, which is fine…but would love to see him be able to “Rock out” now and then. Jason was not that great. I want to like him. He seems like a nice kid, but that song was just corny and he seemed just too darn goofy. (although as far as Simon was concerned, thats what “sold” the performance) I wasnt impressed with Chickeezie this week. I really liked what he did last week and it almost seemed like he was trying to do the same thing again…but failed miserably. I really can’t figure out why they went with Beatles songs again anyway. That was stupid. There are plenty of other “eras” or “Genres” they could have explored. Oh and Monica, I enjoyed your blog this week. You hit the nail right on the head with your comments! Good job!
Well, I am 42, certainly not a teeny bopper, but I guarantee I will buy a David Cook CD when it comesout … and I think it’s a given one WILL come out!
Why is two hours needed? With eleven contestants at 2 minutes, they have 22 minutes for singing and in an hour show that leaves 20 plus minutes for the judges comments, if you can get Paula to spit hers out and quit saying “You look gorgeous” when she doesn’t like the performance.
We just record it and FF through all the fluff.
