Gotta be honest. I’m feeling a little conflicted, and pretty chagrined, at the moment.
Yes, I’ve enjoyed poking fun at David Hernandez over the past few weeks. Ha ha. He’s a lap dancer. Every lyric he sings can be applied to his past as a hot male stripper in a gay club. Ha ha ha ha.
But I guess I never thought he’d be VOTED OUT. Not this soon. The guy was a good singer and a decent entertainer — and way better at both than either of the other two members of the bottom three who were spared tonight, Kristy Lee Cook and Syesha Mercado.
I’m truly surprised he’s gone, despite his less-than-stellar performance on Tuesday. And now I’ve got this uneasy feeling that his possible orientation played a part in evicting him. OH, I so would not want to have been a part of that.
Who knows? Maybe it wasn’t that. Maybe it’s just that he doesn’t have the giddy “pink cell phone” contingent (as one of this blog’s commentators so aptly put it) backing him. Maybe he lost the votes Kristy Lee and Syesha got just for being hot chicks. Maybe in the end, lap dancer or not, he just wasn’t that compelling of a contestant.
Still, I’m feeling kind of icky.
At any rate, the triumvirate of Davids has been disassembled, and if things don’t change fast, the next two weeks are going to be pretty anticlimactic. Buh-bye Kristy Lee. See ya Syesha. Then we’ll resume the real competition.
On a much brighter note, I have an announcement to make. I’ll be on vacation next week, but I’ve found an exceptional temporary replacement. The poster known as “Monica” on this blog, who has been faithfully and funnily posting her thoughts in the comments section since I started this thing, has graciously agreed to fill in while I’m gone. Please be kind, but not too kind. I don’t want her to become my permanent replacement.
I’ll see you back on Tuesday, March 25.

Don’t feel bad Denise. Maybe his perceived orientation had something to do with it but its more likely that he doesn’t really have a style that attracts much of a following. He’s not a rocker, he’s not emo, he’ not a child prodigy, he’s not country, and he is a little too old for the pink cell phone callers. So he was sort of forgotten by the voters. Still, its a shame because he had least gave two good performances and I cannot recall a single good performance by Kristy Lee. I really hope that she was the 2nd from the bottom because we may only have to hear her two more times. I’m sure she is a lovely person but she is just outclassed. Maybe people felt sorry for her because she is so terrible. Or maybe the country fans have no one else to vote for. It is truly a mystery to me.
And thank you for your invitation to guest host the blog next week. ACK the pressure!
You have to consider who the David Hernandez fans were voting for this week. Unfortunately, his fans are also likely to be David Archuleta fans. When they saw how bad Archuleta did they voted to save him not realizing that they were putting Hernandez in jeopardy. This is another one of those voting peculiarities that has nothing to do with how the public would rank the finalists.
So I’m not at all disappointed that Mr. Hernandez has left the building. But I am surprised. Kristy Lee had her bags packed already. And really she kept her emotions under control quite admirably for being the perceived loser of the night. My hope is that she will come back strong and show us a new and improved Kristy next week, because I do think she can sing pretty well. Ditto Syesha. Maybe the humiliation of the bottom three will actually have a positive effect on Syesha. But who am I kidding, one of those two will surely hit the road next week. And it should be Kristy. Honestly, though, I am enjoying this year’s crop better than last years.
I dunno, I think Hernandez was kicked cuz he didn’t have anything left to give. Last nite was very karaoke.
I was shocked it wasn’t Kristy leaving, tho. I do think maybe the country listeners are pulling for her and praying she figures it out before next week. That’s a large fan base that doesn’t have any other real options this season.
I’ve realized something I don’t like about Amanda. She looks like her singing is painful. Like it really requires alot to get those lyrics out. I swear I can see the pressure building behind her eyes… I sincerely hope she doesn’t pull or burst something next week.
IMHO, this season’s crop of hopefuls are pretty good. The viewing public lacks a Sanjaya to mock (well, I’ve been mocking Kristy Lee’s “dance moves”) or an obvious final three. This week was probably the best first-week-on-the-big-stage week, minus David A.’s forgotten lyrics and a few so-so, but better than average performances. It will become, barring major flub ups, difficult to let one go each week.
But please, please, someone put Kristy Lee out of her misery next week.
Oh pooh another week of hard rock and an “attempt” to change songs into country. The little Asian gal needs to step it up alot – has good vocals, but too repititous same thing every week. We need to see another side of her.
I was sad to see David H. go. I think he is better than that. Kristy Lee should have been out this week – I just wonder what people were really thinking. I try to vote for who is my overall favorite, and think about all of their performances combined. I don’t think everything should rest on their one final performance.
On a bright note, I LOVE LOVE LOVE that they are having the finalists sing BEFORE we know who is gone. I think it is too gut wrenching for them to sing after they know they are voted off. Don’t know that I care for the phone calls though – they seemed somewhat contrived to me.
Was it not totally weird to see Sanjaya in the audience? If you ask me, Sanjaya is on stage this year as Overmeyer. This whole Idol/America votes thing is really wearing on me. I can see the trainwreck coming in that America will not vote for the best talent, just the prettiest face. I’m not sure if I was that talented that I would want to win American Idol – where are Taylor Hicks, Ruben Studdard, and Mr. Beat Box now?
David was kicked off because he wasn’t good. Kristy Lee does at least have a good voice, although she really hasn’t found her niche yet. Syesha just can’t sing, she has pitch problems on every song and is all over the place. Archuleta needs to go, I hate that whiny immature voice, and he really demonstrated his immaturity this week. Ramielle needs to go also. She has a bit of a voice, but is no performer. Your standout performers are, Michael, Carly, Amanda, David Cook, and Brooke. These are the voices that are reminesent of those who made rock n’ roll, and we need more of these true singers. They have tremendous voices, and I hope they continue to the finals. Of course, I don’t know which one I would vote for then.
No one has mentioned that the arrangement behind Kristi’s song was the real horror. The driving beat did not match what she was trying to do (country sound). A better arrangement would probably have resulted in a better performance.
That aside. GO MONICA!
I was glad to see David H. go. I can’t deal with the way he stands when he sings although he does have a good voice…he just isn’t original or as talented as some of the others. His performance on Tuesday was painful for me to watch.
Syesha can sing too but totally unorginal and boring.
I think the bottom three were absolutely the right one’s.
i was not surprised to see david go. similar to jason yeager, he seemed a little too smug in his abilities. his silent “wow” at the news he had been booted proved this to me. kristy is in over here head, as is sayesha. final 3….micheal, david a. and carly.
Eleanor Rigby rocked and Chikeeze was a total shock! Where did that come from??? Kristy Lee was terrible and I think she’ll get the golden microphone next week. I never really had any positive or negative thoughts about Hernandez. I’m just waiting to see Jason Castro, who I really like, he reminds me of Bright Eyes, when they have to do something really upbeat and non-acoustic. I’m afraid he won’t be able to do it. I really like little David but I think the top 2 will be David Cook and Brooke.
C’mon! David Hernandez getting the boot? It was about time. All he was capable of doing was preening for the girls/women. He couldn’t sing in key, had no stage magnetizm, and never should have gotten into the top 24. As a man who watches with my wife, we are in total agreement about David needing to go. (She found his cornball antics more sickening then I did) About all of the rubish spitting from this blog about Amanda Overmeyer. Anyone ever here of JANIS JOPLIN? Perhaps the best white blues singer ever, until now that Amanda has shown up. Simon, Paula and Randy are very good at choosing the best singers. At Simon’s request Amanda is staying away from all of Janis’s songs. Trying to prove that she is more then just a great blues singer. I have yet to hear any pitch problems from her. Amanda can flat ROCK THE HOUSE DOWN!!! She is going to be a force to be reckened with for quite a while yet.
Sorry, David Hernandez was kicked off because of bigotry. He was not deserving of the boot. He has done an excellent job singing and was worthy of a top 6 ranking.
Sherry you make a very good point about the arrangement of Kristy’s song. They could have countrified the song without murdering it.
Amanda proved her weakness when the group was singing “Help, I Need Somebody”! She has imitated Janis Joplin for so long that she doesn’t have a style of her own. She can’t sing ANYTHING BUT Janis Joplin songs. She needs to go. The Idol winner needs to be a vocalist with their own, unique style……not an imitator. That’s why the Brittany Spears imitator (I forgot her name) is gone.
THANK YOU AMERICA – so far you’re doing great….girly Danny got the boot and Amanda “DeVille” got to the boot.
