So many Idol Thoughts are running through my mind, I really don’t know where to begin.
I still can’t stop thinking about that hot new stage and wondering if Ricky and the band are ticked that they’ve been elevated to a perch so high above the action that no one should notice the background singers outdoing the contestants 49.9 percent of the time.
A slight confession before we begin. I’m not a Beatles fan. I know I’m supposed to be. I know it’s un-American not to be. But they just don’t excite me, and I know I was hearing some of these songs from the all-holy “Lennon/McCartney Songbook” for the first time ever tonight. SAW-EEE!
As for the performances, let’s divide tonight’s into four categories, and we’ll start with:
SO SURPRISING!
1. Chikezie: OMG that was awesome! You know an “Idol” performance is good when you find yourself involuntarily grinning from ear-to-ear before it’s even half over. Not sure where that energetic, crazy original version of “She’s A Woman” came from. Also not sure why Chikezie didn’t do that sorta thing sooner. Maybe it takes a moment of truth like waiting for your death sentence hand-in-hand with Danny Noriega to make a man wake up and smell the Argyle. Whatever happened there, I liked it, and I hope we see more.
2. Amanda Overmyer: Despite the many, many, many criticisms of Amanda I have made this season, I do not go into her performances expecting to hate her. She and I and that crazy dye job start fresh every week. And I actually thought this week’s was decent. I might even have heard a bit of a singing voice hiding one layer beneath all that garbling in her “You Can’t Do That.” I still don’t think she can compare, talent-wise, to most of the rest, but I won’t be so angry this week when she doesn’t leave. And we all know she won’t.
NOT REMOTELY SURPRISING
1. The judges continued to heap praise on Carly “What’s the Name of That Irish Girl?” Smithson, who I can admit is a vocal talent but who just isn’t all that exciting to me. She did look the best she’s ever looked tonight, but I have to wonder why the judges are so dead-set on keeping her.
2. Syesha Mercado continued her streak of performances that can best be described as… reliable. She’s safe this week, but YAWN, I do not enjoy watching her.
3. Jason Castro continued to exude charm and charisma, even though his performance of “If I Fell” was a tad lackluster. His interview skills, however, have improved ten-fold. Go Aggies.
4. Michael Johns continued to look 20,000 times better than he sounds. And I’m not complaining. At all.
5. Brooke White continued to cement her spot as my absolute favorite contestant. Although I sure hope we can dig up SOME sort of scandal in her snow white past (cutting a tag off a mattress, perhaps??) she sings with conviction and passion and maturity and sounds pretty fabulous doing so. Loved her take on “Let It Be,” and take it from someone who flubbed up many a grade school piano recital, hitting every key correctly is no small feat.
6. David Hernandez continued to ooog me out. Sorry man. We’re done. (He sang “I Saw Her Standing There,” in case you weren’t wondering.)
KINDA SURPRISING, IN A NOT-SO-SURPRISING KIND OF WAY
1. David Cook is starting to look like the David to beat. Last week’s rocking “Hello” could have been just a fluke. But apparently not, considering he rocked “Eleanor Rigby” just as hard. And it CAN’T be easy to rock a song called “Eleanor Rigby.” Can it??
2. Poor David Archuleta. His lyric-forgetting, cringeworthy performance of “We Can Work it Out” was just bad, bad, bad. But it was bound to happen. How much pressure can a kid that young really endure? I’m sure he’ll bounce back. At least I hope so. Not sure I could stand listening to mean old Simon rip into that innocent young boy. Child abuse!
BUH-BYE
1. It’s got to be Kristy Lee Cook going home on Wednesday. Her countrified “Eight Days A Week” was as bold as it was bad.
2. But if it isn’t, I’ve got to think Ramiele Malubay will get the boot. Everyone of her performances has been soulless and robotic, and even though her voice is good, she’s squandering her opportunity. I’m not sure she has any true star potential. (And JUST when I’d learned to spell her name.)
Decisions! Decisions! Can’t we still lose two???
So what do you think? Do you , like me, wish Simon and Ryan would just GET A ROOM already? Would Dolly Parton on helium even be audible to the human ear? And will Kristy Lee or Ramiele go home on Wednesday?

Kudos! Finally, someone who agrees with me!! (well, mostly)
I didn’t like David Cook tonite. Ick.
I still don’t like Amanda, however I will concede a better performance tonite. I just wish I could understand her.
As for Michael Johns (he is cute isn’t he?!), I do like the way he sounds. He reminds me of Michael Hutchins (I know this has been said by the judges, but not before I said it in the privacy of my living room!), and ohhhh how I adored him.
I felt really bad for Archu-cutie, loved Chikezie for the first time this season, and couldn’t stand Kristy Lee’s performance. David Hernandez wasn’t any good either. Syesha and Ramiele were just kinda boring, as per usual. I don’t like Carly and I don’t know why. Something about her, like she expects to win… hmmm.
My favorites are Brooke and Jason Castro. You hit the nail on the head when describing Brooke, but I have to disagree with your opinion of Jason’s performance tonite. I’m with Paula… I could feel the emotion!
*whew* Glad I got that outta my system. Thx!
Well Denise, I can forgive you for being tired of Oprah (you said what many of us have been thinking for years…good for you) but you are not a Beatles fan? The shame! lol Well you’re still young.
I was so looking forward to to tonite because I am a huge Beatles fan and actually knew almost all of those songs. Unfortunately, there were only about 4 performances that did them justice.
I agree about Chikesie…that is one song I am not familiar with and at first I thought oh no….but then it just got better and better and was so original and he was having such a good time out there. I always liked his personality, just thought his performances were trite. Not tonite. So grateful he got a chance to shine and we didn’t have to watch Danny Noriega tart up a legendary song.
The other three I thought did justice to the songs were Jason Castro, Brooke White, and the phenomenal David Cook. While I normally don’t agree with drunk Paula, she is right about Jason…he sings with his heart and while he was shaky on the high notes it seemed poignant and not cringing….not as good as last week but I love watching him perform. I was leery about Brooke doing Let It Be but she just does it without feathers and bows and bells and whistles and it always comes out good. I liked that she did it authentically….with the keyboard…like it was done originally. And David Cook…well…he looks like Casper Milquetoast in interviews and sort of nerdy and then he sings and all of a sudden he is a toe curler. I loved his Eleanor Rigby.
I agree with you about Carly. She has been wearing her diva crown a little heavy the past few weeks and tonite she seemed to enjoy herself for the first time but to me she sings one note….loud. She doesn’t thrill me. She is the Michael Johns of the ladies. She SHOULD be good but somehow she always disappoints.
Glad you are seeing some of Amanda’s good qualities. She is not my fav for over all winner but I want her to stay in awhile. She is also a conundrum because on interviews she doesn’t seem to shine much then she comes out and performs and whether you like her or not, she does her thing and you can tell she loves what she is doing.
Sayesha or saynoya was just the same as always. Sounds like a 3rd rate vegas lounge singer. Apparently David Archuletta’s mom was too busy having him accost strangers with *And I am telling YOUUUUU!* to give him an education in Lennon-McCartney so he does a cover of a Stevie Wonder cover. Poor kid probably knew none of the songs…too young to be there I think and the same for poor Ramielle who loved the song but had no idea what to do with it.
And, I guess David Hernandez’s career as a stripper has now been transformed into a pizza bistro guy which is appropriate as his performance was so cheesy, I’m seriously considering becoming lactose intolerant.
But nothing can compare to the darling Kristy Lee Cook’s performance. She is back to the nose scrunching, eye-winking, look i’m doing an elaine imitation of dance moves performance tricks coupled with a vocal that was a bad imitation of every country singer who ever sang a song. If we never hear another Beatle’s song on American Idol, she will be the reason. Even Paula was absolutely speechless in horror at that. So, I hope her fan base, which must be on sensory numbing agents to live through that performance, was too numbed to dial tonite and that she finally goes home to her horses.
i will still vote for ramielle. she’s got the whole package to be an american idol - talent, exotic looks and good attitude. if only she will show more confidence in her performance and choose the right songs, it will be great!
Boy, I guess I’m marching to a different drummer than most of the people posting comments here. I think Carly is GREAT. She is by far the best singer with David A., Michael Johns, & David Cook coming in behind her. Syesha is also very good. I can’t see for the life of me what other people are seeing in Jason Castro. I thought his performance tonight was off key, lackluster, and just plain boring. I can’t stand Amanda, but at least she’s not boring! I didn’t even recognize the new Chikezie tonight. He was much improved. I don’t care much for Brooke, although her hair looked great tonight. Couldn’t she have slipped on some shoes to come over to hear the judges’ comments? Thanks, Denise, for letting me vent.
You are spot on with every critique! This iz a singing competition…but it’s soo much more than that (simon!)
Picking the right song..arranging it to make it fresh…performing it in the most entertaining way possible…communicating the story to the audience.
AND! just because you can entertain doesn’t mean you can sell records..Taylor Hicks!
Nothing is worse than watching a kid sing a song about “makin love” and falling in and out of love..ick!
Amanda AKA Cruella DeVil has gotta ago - too much of a rocker - needs to tone it down a bit and show some other sides of her - IF she has any.
Carly & Brooke are my favorites thus far. Archuletta needs some chapstick - keeps licking his lips too much -he did not do that well last night and forgetting the lyrics - uh oh not good.
Buh bye Amanda DeVil.
It was really fun to see Chikezie finally do something worth remembering last night. All along I felt like he really has potential and it was nice to see it emerge. I couldn’t help but love his performance and found myself cheering for him halfway through that song. David Cook continues to impress me with his confidence and ability to perform. Jason Castro wasn’t as good last night and he really is looking one-dimensional in all his performances. Little David really struggled but I had to love his mature reaction to the judge’s critique. He knew he’d blown it. But he’s safe. Little pink cellphones on redial….need I say more. Of the girls, Brooke was the best even though what she does is so dang simple. She doesn’t need to skunk up her hair or hop all over the stage in some sexed up outfit. She is what she is and I think she is music in the purest form. Carly… why can’t I like her? She can sing. She seems nice enough. Sorry, I just am not able to like her performances. And Amanda? I must say she had better stage presence last night. Hmmmm, anything else positive? Guess not. There will come a night when growling and screeching won’t work and she’ll be forced to actually sing. Until then she’s safe. Did anyone else sing last night? To quote Simon, they were “forgettable”. Who’s going home? I say either Ramiele or Syesha. Kristy Lee probably has a big fan base enamored with her cuteness and down-home charm. But they may not save her this week, either.
Denise you are spot on. Hernandez or Cook have got to go. Castro, White and Johns are the ones to beat. And please, for the health of your musical soul, please listen to Beatles albums Rubber Soul, Help and Revolver immediately. You must be brought in to the light.
Hey, Monica and/or Hawkmama. It’s Denise. Could you e-mail me at the Eagle? I have a favor to ask…
dneil@wichitaeagle.com
Thanks!
Denise… love your blog! And I agree with most of your thoughts… but not about The Beatles! Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is my all time favorite album!! I’ve been a Chikezie fan from the beginning… but She’s A Woman was absolutely brilliant!!
And, a note to Mel… I’m also a huge fan of the late “Michael Hutchins”… but please get his name right… Michael Hutchence. Thanks.
David Cook rocked, but Chikezie JAMMED. They were DEFINITELY the best 2 last night. Carly was ok .. but boring compared to those two. I don’t really like her and am not a fan of David A. Can’t stand that I can hear him take his breaths when he sings. Almost sounds like a gasp every time! Nice voice, but fix the breathing dude! Michael Johns was dependable and I liked Brooke ok too. But I VOTED for David C and Chikezie.
Denise I have to admit you saved me from endless nights of Oprahs latest webinar and book. I also have to admit I did already buy the book but will not feel Opressured to read it now
Now, was it just me or did Kristy sing a wee bit faster then what seemed humanly possible? And to Boobookitty somewhere David A.’s mom has already signed a chapstick endorsement!
Castro- eyes baby, that’s all I can say
Scary Rocker Chick- better then last week but still a scary rocker chick
Carly-my husband loves her so I automatically don’t,sorry Carly
Brooke- good raspy voice, very vanilla though
Stripper dude- can’t get past making everything you say dirty/stripper like which is funny but gross
David Cook-nice sound, weird hair ,from Tulsa sounds like a nice package to me
Bye bye Kristy
Finally Chikezie puts in an awesome performance. I always thought he was one of the better singers. David Cook did pretty good, but for some reason, he still doesn’t impress me. I think Ramiele has a great voice, and she should’ve added a bit more “oomph” to her performance last night. It does seem like she’s doing the same thing over and over, which is too bad, because now she might lose her spot.
I have about the same opinion that you do Denise, but can I just say that I love to read your column! I always read it aloud to my coworkers and we laugh and agree with most of what you say. You are very creative and talented!! Keep it up!!!
As for American Idol, I made a promise to my friends that if this week wasn’t better that I was going to STOP watching it. I’m not a Beatle fan either, but I thought the talent was a little better this week, so I will watch one more week and see what happens.
No real comment today. I feel cheated. My satellite was on the fritz last night and all I got was grainy, garbled images. Guess I’ll have to go to itunes tonight if I want to see what they were really like.
My husband found your blog about American Idol and we have been reading faithfully. We are amazed how you nearly quote our commments every week.
My husband and I do differ a bit about our favorites. I LOVE Brooke. I’m not sure she can make it to a win, but she is my fav!
My final thought…thank goodness for DVRs so we can record and then totally skip Paula’s comments.
I pretty much agree with your thoughts Denise. I was really happy to see some of them actually have halfway decent performances. I was very impressed with Chikezie. He really did a great job. I also dig David Cook. Granted I always feel like I need to brush his hair off his face, but I think he really delivers the song when he gets up on that stage. I was sorry to see David Archuleta have problems. I think we got to see a glimpse of his “true” age. Yes, I realize he’s used to performing but I think he probably felt a bit uneasy with his song this week and totally lost all concentration in the middle of it. I have to wonder if some of the songs he’s been singing thus far in the competition aren’t some of his “portfolio” of music he has learned and performed numerous times. Nonetheless, I think he’ll continue to be a strong competitor, if he can pull it together. I loved Brooks “Hey Jude” too. In the beginning I have to say she kind of came across as “snow white” in the forest singing to the birds and bunnies…but I’m starting to really like her. One thing I have to say…I’m really sick of the wise cracking between Simon and Ryan. They need to cool it. Not funny nor entertaining.
Carley needs to go…she’s a fraud….She was on MCA records at the same time Randy Jackson worked for MCA in artist promotion….and he acted at the audition that he didn’t know her…ya right.
http://votefortheworst.com/20080311/lies_carly_smithson
Also Star Search Winner David “I Forgot The lyrics cause my dad is crazy and was kicked off the Star Search set in 2001 for harassing my competition” Archuleta needs to be gone too….
I think Carly & Brooke may make the top two - a least for sure Brooke and can sing and play a mean piano.
I’m excited tonight! Gosh, why can’t Kristy Lee Cook just get the boot already!? She should have been gone a long time ago. and that Carly chick…I agree with Mel. There is just something about her that I don’t like. Especially when she sings her face expression portrays that of her wanting to hurt somebody hah. I was kinda bummed that Chikezie didn’t make it any further but I enjoyed his performances while they lasted. I also didn’t think David Hernandez was any good and I really think that David Archuleta is a sweet kid who has a lot of potential in this competition. Syesha has a nice voice and David Cook has had some good performances. Jason Castro is a cool and modest performer! Amanda was a cool chick but her voice…I wouldn’t be able to listen to it for long.
