Straight up, now tell me — WHAT is Paula Abdul smoking and where can I get some?
Honestly, I don’t understand why FOX isn’t subjecting this woman to random drug tests. She’s higher than a kite, blathering her way though one of the most watched television programs in America and robbing poor Syesha Mercado of her chance to get any actual feedback because the poor girl sang last, and Paula had filled up so much time with her altered state, there simply wasn’t time. (And shame on Simon for egging her on.)
Pretty sad when that’s the headline of the night. But I’ll try to dig up a few more.
The ladies did a bit better this week, though by my count, they’re still no where near the men.
My favorite performance of the night came from Brooke White, the type of girl I’d normally dislike for her pure-as-the-driven-snow persona, but who might be the only girl who didn’t mangle at least five notes. Her acoustic “Love is A Battlefield” was, in the originality category, the equivalent of David Cook’s “Hello” on Tuesday. I continue to love the raspy quality of her voice, and she might be the only one of the women who can actually sell the emotion of her song.
I liked several other performances, but with serious reservations. Carly Smithson indeed delivered some killer notes on “I Drove All Night,” but Simon was right — could she have chosen a more nothing song?
Meanwhile, Ramiele Malubay also belted out some nice ones on “Against All Odds,” but she’s got three things working against her. 1.) Terrible, horrible clothes — straight off the K-Mart mannequin, best I can tell. 2.) Terrible, horrible habit of smacking her lips between every syllable, though she toned it down considerably from last week. 3.) She’s dead inside. But she’s cute, so let’s keep her.
The two who dared to do Whitney — Syesha Mercado with “Saving All My Love” and Asia’h Epperson with “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” both pulled it off, but they also bug me for similar reasons. 1.) Too dang peppy. 2.) Unflattering, high-waisted diaper-esque pants that should have been left in the 1980s. (This means you too, Smithson.)
I think the two to go will be (obviously) Kady Malloy, who’s bizarre delivery of some Queen song I’ve never heard was probably her last free pass on that stage, and Kristy Lee Cook, who’s a gorgeous little gal but who couldn’t find a note in Journey’s “Faithfully” to save her life.
Of course, if life was fair, the first person to go would be Amanda Overmyer. My jaw dropped when the trio of judges gushed over her “I Hate Myself For Loving You.” I know I can’t be the only one who notices that THIS WOMAN CANNOT SING. Someone please explain to me what in the name of Ryan Seacrest is going on here. Is she bribing the judges? Threatening them? Brainwashing them with her magic blond bangs? I seriously have nothing against her other than her utter lack of talent. I just want to understand.
So what do you think? Does Paula need a shower and some black coffee? Is Amanda as bad as my ears keep insisting she is? And which of these two girls will be gone on Thursday?

I agree that Brooke White was by far the best performer tonite. I would compare her to Jason Castro, in that her singing appears effortless, her phrasing is her own, and she simply seems to have a passion for her music which takes her beyond self-conscious performances.
I tuned in late and did not see the first two perform. I have not been a fan of Kristy Lee Cook or Kady although they seem like nice people. Kristy tried to go country a bit tonite which is her forte to the extent she has one and at least she got rid of those horrible eye gestures and winks she used in her last performances. Asi’ah Epperson has never been horrible, but she has never been really good either.
Ramiele was disappointing to me tonite. As for Sayesha, I just say no how . She is absolutely unoriginal.
Carly is really someone I have not warmed to. At least she didn’t yell every note tonite as she has done in the past.
Now to Amanda…she is a rocker and doing what rockers do. I like her. No…she doesn’t belt out like Whitney Houston but neither did Joplin.
As for Paula…they really need to control her a bit. Its way beyond cute and is now like watching a trainwreck. She probably wouldn’t babble quite so much if Randy and Simon didn’t keep interrupting whatever train of thought she eventually manages to put together. But, they need to watch what she is putting in those coke cups until after the show.
I too, think the blonde twins will be the ones to go tomorrow. Am a little curious about Ryan’s tease about the *shocking* show tomorrow. I’m sure hoping my two favorite’s…David Cook and Jason…are not going home. Wouldn’t mind it if the shock was losing David Archuleta, but alas, that is too much to hope for. Based on the message boards on the idol website, it looks like Danny Noriega has the Sanjaya contingent well in hand so we will probably lose some good ones before they finally pull the plug on him.
It’s very sad that Paula’s bizarre behavior was the center of attention tonight. She’s certainly compromising any validity that the judges should have. What an embarassment. The producers need to stifle her somehow. She’s ruining their show.
Brooke once again gave a very good performance. But I’d like to see her do something with a little more life one of these times. She seems rather one-dimensional so far.
Hmmm. Who else sang? The guys were more memorable.
For some reason I can’t enjoy Carly. She has a decent voice but something about her just doesn’t appeal to me. I liked Syesha’s performance but she seems a little full of herself. Ditto Asia’h.
Kady and Kristy Lee should probably prepare to exit. Surely Ramiele is safe. Amanda should go this week however her performance was vastly improved over…whatever that was she did last week. Sadly we’ll probably be subjected to more of her should we choose to tune in. I’ve had about all of Paula that I can endure.
Denise - I echo your sentiments exactly - great minds must think alike. I’m really hoping that the high waisted diaper pants isn’t a west coast trend that will hit Wichita next fall.
I agree, Paula is absolutely out of it with all her blubbering. I sure hope Amanda and Danny N. go tonight - can’t stand to see Danny twisting his lips and his awkward interviews on camera, and his girly motions…….he’s gotta go. Never cared for Amanda she has no on camera personality at all. Brooke has my vote…….I believe she’ll make it to the finally.
Man. Last night was Ah-Noy-ing! Glad to know Randy worked with everyone in the business. Sheesh. Shut-up already. I agree with most of what you said Denise. I still don’t understand the appeal of “Cruella de Vil”-esk Amanda. I want her hide behind a curtain once so I can actually listen to her sing instead of being distracted by her hair and outfit.
I do have to say I liked the girl who did the country version of “Faithfully”. It was a different take on one of my favorites songs, so that always makes me happy.
Finally, Syesha, SNORE…she sure can sing, now try something different.
I can’t wait for the guys again. As much as I find Archeletta (sp?) annoying, I enjoy his arrangements and hope he stays around. I might stop watching is Jason Castro leaves. Love him.

Brooke was by far the best last night. Effortless and enjoyable. Amanda is starting to get annoying. Everything sounds exactly the same. She can go anytime as far as I’m concerned, but VoteForTheWorst seems to want her to stay around. I like Ramiele also, but nobody else seems to have the “it” factor. While Carly has good vocals, she doesn’t WOW me. Bye-Bye to Kadie and Kristie Lee….Syesha’s and Asia’h better step it up or they will be next.
Oh yeah….I was happy I had to watch last night on tape so that I could FF through Paula’s painful comments.
I actually think Amanda did great last night. I thought she was AWFUL last week, but was glad she got another chance. This show needs something different and she is that. I am so sick of the cute little blondes that can’t sing and get voted through because they are cute little blondes. Amanda can sing, she not mainstream and that is good. Kady should go home for sure, she should have gone home 2 weeks ago, as for the other one going home, maybe Kristi.
Was it just me or did anyone else notice the odd way that Amanda was acting after her performance? She was acting very low key…almost sad. Like she’s trying to look vulnerable or something. Even Simon commented that she could “Smile”…then she barely grinned. I wonder whats up with that. Its not like they gave her a bunch of negative comments or anything. You’d think she’d be happy and bouncing off the walls. One more thought…ever noticed how everyone thinks Simon is an idiot when he gives bad reviews..but when he praises them they act like he’s a GOD or something and practically fall to thier knees thanking him. Maybe its because when he bashes them they secretly know he’s right so when he praises them they feel like they really did do good.
“Well, I, you know I think, maybe this time, colors, texture, all I have to say is positivity” could be something Paula said last night. I really don’t know because at times it’s just hard to understand her. The rare times she keeps her comments short I think everyone is thankful!
Syesha Mercado definitely got robbed of her time with judges. Sad, because I think she did a great job and was hurried off stage.
I agree rocker girl Amanda cannot sing, and was surprised to see the judges absolutely love her and Simon calling her performance the best. WTF?
I wish there were a way we could contact staff of American Idol and comment on Paula’s bizzare behavior.
WOW–I’m sorry but I think Amanda can sing. Granted-she is not American Idol material–she does have that old blues/janis joplin thing going on though. Like a previous comment posted-I’m tired of the cute little blonde girls. Amanda’s voice is raw and she can sing the rock songs. I do wish she would get rid of the blonde bangs though. It makes her look like a skunk.
Denise, do you read the comments? Just curious. I agree with what Monica said about Brook and Jason. I felt the same way.
Amanda was not so bad last night BUT if you checked out her face…she wasn’t there. I think she has already decided she is leaving and was completely detached from her performance. She is unique.
I think Luke needs to go and I am torn as to the other guy. But as for the girls…I think Denise hit it.
I also have puzzled over Paula for a while now. It’s weird how she can’t finish a sentence and is stumbling all over herself. It’s a mystery.
Sherry, yes, I do read the comments. And I very much appreciate them this year. Everyone who’s commenting actually has something thoughtful to say. Last year’s comments were usually just a yucky little hate fest. So thanks!
The staff of AI needs to rid of Paula - think we’ve had enough of her blubbering. She’s been fine up til now.
Here’s my take on why the judges raved about Amanda’s performance….because she’s the female pick on votefortheworst.com and if they say they LIKE her, they mess up the voting! You can’t “opposite” vote for someone who the judges actually LIKE!
But it didn’t work.
Dang.
She sooo needs to go.
Paula needs to go, too.
To rehab.
