Baby, they’re no good

OvermyerI think Kristy Lee Cook put it best tonight with her unintentionally appropriate song. “You’re no good, you’re no good, you’re no good, baby you’re no good.”

Was I just cranky, or were those girls perfectly awful? I kept waiting, waiting for just one breathtaking, show stopping performance. But not even the judges could muster up much more than, “Well, you were no good TODAY, but we think we like you IN GENERAL” for any of the female contestants.

What gives? Is this normal this early in the season? We keep hearing how this year’s Idols are so much better vocally than last year’s. But I can’t remember a single night when either LaKisha or Melinda wasn’t AT LEAST on key throughout her song.

I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come. Otherwise, it’s going to be a long and painful season.

You know it’s bad when the standout performance of the night comes from Brooke White, who I actually like but can admit is a tad vanilla. I liked the hoarse quality to her voice on her cover of “Your So Vain,” even though her non-committal guitar playing was a tad distracting. She’s playing! She’s pausing! She’s strumming! Now she’s stopping…

And although I wasn’t crazy on Carly Smithson’s show-opening “Crazy On You,” compared to what followed her, I had to amend that opinion. Something about her just bugs me. Her voice is strong, but really the only thing interesting about her is her Irish accent.

On Wednesday, though, strong and clear voices were hard to come by, and the rest of the girls varied from boring to just plain bad.

Let’s start with the interchangeable blondies, who without the aid of my notepad, I’d be unable to keep straight.

Blondie #1 is Kristy Lee Cook, a.k.a. Shania Barbie. Her Elaine-esque dance moves were only slightly less awkward than her delivery of “You’re No Good,” which in turn was only slightly less awkward than her bright red tongue, clearly coated with a pre-performance lozenge.

Blondie #2 is Alaina Whitaker, a judge favorite whose “Hopelessly Devoted” was hopelessly off-tune. And now we find she’s hopelessly OCD, unable to function should her egg roll make contact with her spaghetti. Um, thanks for sharing?

And Blondie #3 is Kady Malloy, who is apparently a wonderful singer and a magnetic personality — as long as she’s NOT standing on the “American Idol” stage. Her “Magic Man” was so hard to watch, my finger was magically drawn to the fast forward button.

Meanwhile, the brunettes were stumbling just as badly. Syesha Mercado’s “Me and Mr(s). Jones” was dull. Ramiele Malubay’s “Don’t Leave Me This Way” was robotic. Alexandra Lushington’s “If You Leave Me Now” was… wow, I can’t even remember what it was beyond not so good. And Asia’h Epperson’s “All By Myself” was out of her league.

And now, please allow me a short Amanda Overmyer rant. COME ON PEOPLE! I absolutely do not get her or what the heck she is doing on “American Idol.” She was so bad on her butchering of “Carry On Wayward Son” that I’m almost speechless. Not to mention that she looked like she was just tossed out of a dress rehearsal for “Cats,” and who can blame them after all that howling? I’m sure she’s nice, and I know she’s different. But when different can’t sing, different needs to go. Thank you.

So after two rounds of singing, it looks like David “Aw Shucks” Archuleta is still firmly in the lead, and the ladies didn’t do anything to challenge his position.

What do you think? Were they girls as bad as I thought they were? Is the trouble the singers or the stupid genre? And who (Amanda Overmyer) is going to be sent home (Amanda Overmyer) on Thursday (Amanda Overmyer Amanda Overmyer Amanda Overmyer)?

Well I just have to say the girls were better than the guys. I was not wowed or anything however. Carly was my fav last night. She just has the “package”. Kady needs to be the one to go for sure. And Amanda. I love rock and I was a huge Joplin fam but even saying that, this woman is not *it*. She kinda scares me a little even lol. Kady? omg. She is So full of herself and trust me, the porn industry is keeping an eye on her. I would put money on it! She really is good looking but I dont think even an 18 yr old hypersexual boy thinks she is as good looking as she does! Learn to dance and she has a big future in the *other* industry ha! Brooke.. well she just IS Carly Simon but .. I find her cutesy sweetness a bit over the top to be honest. And blonde #? is a cookie cutter version of Carrie Underwood so that could help/hurt her I am thinking. Wonder what the genre will be next week? I can see why the ratings have gone down so much on it though. I have been an addict to idol for every season and the entire universe knows not to call on those nights. I sat on the phone for half an hour last night and didnt even flinch. And is it me or has the stars fllen out of alignment and the earth tilted a bit on its axis? Because, Randy seems to be pms’ing a lot and Simon seems to be the nice one. I am irritated at how irritated Ryan gets with Simon and to be honest, it was not “entertaining or amusing” that on guys night he thanked only Paula Pocket and Randy Ridiculous. He just needs to grow up I think but thats me.

You know it’s sad when we can scrunch the whole show down to 27 minutes on TiVO…singing….ack! So off key!! Fast Forward…Randy’s comments….skip through Paula’s…Simon’s comments…skip through Ryan’s (man, has he ALWAYS been this annoying??)….Next singer. Yikes, hit fast forward again.
Only on the rare occasion where Randy starts off with something OTHER than “well, hey, you know I’m a big fan, but…” did we think “Geez, maybe we were too hasty, and hit the rewind.” And then say….”Ummm, no. We weren’t too hasty. They were just too darn nice.”
    Ugh.
Frankly, I found the commercials more entertaining than the actual SINGING and skipping those is the whole purpose of a DVR, isn’t it?
I’m beginning to think I would have had a chance this season, and I can’t hold a tune in a bucket.
(At least we would have had a local connection to grasp on to! :)

I think Overmeyer (?) did a great job of coordinating the hair with the pants… She’s like a zebra; is she a blonde with a black dye-job or a brunette armed with a jug of bleach? Watch out for Malloy; she may be the dark horse of the group.

Denise is right – what the heck is Amanda doing on “American Ido?” She’s terrible – BIG TIME!!! Brooke has a long journey ahead of her – I think she will make the top 3.

I totally agree that these girls .. none of them .. had “it” last night. I actually fell asleep several times and had to rewind on my DVR … only to fast forward again because it was so bad! My question is .. why are they picking such obscure songs???? I LOVE 70’s music, listen to it on satellite radio all the time .. but these songs really stink!

They should just let all of the girls go. Don’t even make them sit through who’s leaving and when. I think we can bet that a guy will be this year’s American Idol!

Wow. Something must be wrong with me. I actually enjoyed a lot of the performances last night. Not Amanda. Not Asia’h. And poor little girl opera singer is oh so good on the preliminary clips but must develop stage fright for the live performance. i think she has potential, though. Interestingly, my husband was listening to the performance via my webcam as I was watching it. (he travels with his job)… anyway he could only hear the performances and not see them, which is usually a good test of vocal quality. He was very impressed with most of the performances vocally. I actually liked the girls’ night better than the guys’ night this week. And I’m a musician. I think I know good pitch when I hear it.

Hopefully Amanda will go bye-bye. Maybe Asia’h too.
