Sports Time Fan Shop West expands into former Under the Cork space at NewMarket Square

WICHITA — Just in time for March Madness, as Joe Ward likes to say, he’s expanded his Sports Time Fan Shop West at NewMarket Square.

He now has 5,000 square feet at the center at 21st and Maize.

Ward took the former Under the Cork space, a retail location that closed in January in advance of parent company Smoky Hill Vineyards & Winery in Salina closing.

April Reed of Slawson Cos. handled the new Sports Time lease.

The two-decades-old Sports Time was NewMarket’s first locally owned tenant in 2001.

After getting through the madness of the next month, Ward plans a grand reopening in April.

Smoky Hill Vineyards & Winery and Under the Cork retail shop at NewMarket Square to close

WICHITA — Smoky Hill Vineyards & Winery in Salina is closing, which means the winery’s Wichita store also is going out of business.

Under the Cork at NewMarket Square will close late this month.

“The winery has really been flourishing,” says owner Norm Jennings.

The problem is he and his wife, Jen, have a new calling.

“Essentially, about two years ago the Lord started to take us on a journey of working with different couples, premarital couples and couples in crisis, and students on just developing healthy relationships,” Jennings says.

They have At Stake Ministries.

He says it’s not feasible to keep the winery and let someone else run it.

“It’s very hard just to hire somebody that can manage the processes,” he says.

He tried selling the winery, but that proved tough, too.

“It’s not a viable investment,” Jennings says. “You really have to be owner-operators. You really need to find somebody that that’s their dream.”
