Shamrock Car Wash to build at former L&M Cycle

WICHITA — The building that was home to L&M Schwinn since 1969 is coming down.

A new car wash is going in its place at 132 S. Rock Road.

L&M, which is now L&M Cycling and Fitness, moved to 3590 N. Woodlawn behind Smashburger last month.

Shawn Penner of Shamrock Development is bringing his second Shamrock Car Wash to Wichita.

His first is at 3530 N. Woodlawn.

Penner’s new car wash will have three bays.

“It should be a real good location for us,” Penner says. “Traffic is great. Access is great.”

Penner says there’s some utility work to do before he can proceed.

“We’re ready to go. It’s just a matter of waiting on Westar at this point.”

Smashburger chooses SHS for brand help

burgerWICHITA — Denver-based Smashburger has hired Sullivan Higdon & Sink as its agency of record for its Wichita and Tulsa markets.

“We have more work to do to develop the brand in the Wichita market,” says Smashburger founder Tom Ryan.

He says the Smashburgers at 3570 N. Woodlawn and in Derby are “doing fine.”

“All restaurants can do better,” Ryan says.

“I don’t think we opened that market as strong as we opened other markets,” he says. “That’s why I wanted to get some fresh eyes on the brand.”

He likes SHS for several reasons.

“We used them years ago when I was with Pizza Hut,” Ryan says.

Also, he says, “They had a great history of bringing new brands to the Wichita market.”

He particularly likes how SHS helped Go Wichita Convention and Visitors Bureau launch its new brand with a mix of traditional and social media.

He hopes to use both for his restaurants as well.

“I would expect to see a resurgence of the Smashburger brand in Wichita,” Ryan says.

Derby Smashburger set to open

For anyone living or working in Derby who wants to count down the days until Smashburger opens, here’s something to look forward to.

The opening date for the new restaurant, which will be at 1220 N. Rock Road, is May 20.

Smashburger to add second location

The Wichita area is getting its second Smashburger restaurant, but it won’t actually be in Wichita.

Derby — more precisely 1220 N. Rock in Derby — will be the new location.

“There is a method to the madness,” says Smashburger spokeswoman Jennifer Miller.

She says the chain, owned by Denver-based Consumer Capital Partners, likes the demographics and traffic counts in Derby.

“Derby seems to be growing,” Miller says. “Our president (Scott Crane) is a former Wichitan, so he knew the area pretty well.”
