Mattress Hub to open fifth Wichita store

WICHITA — Mattress Hub is continuing its rapid expansion, this time at home.

The Wichita-based company, which Ryan Baty and Mark Barrientos founded in 2008, is going to break ground on its fifth Wichita site this week.

It will be near the southwest corner of 21st and Maize Road, just west of where the new Chick-fil-A is locating.

“We think it’s one of the best real estate positions in the city, and we’re excited to be there,” Baty says.

“Being able to do this at home, being able to go out and still grow in our hometown, that’s what makes this really exciting for us.”

He and Barrientos each live on the west side.

The new store, which will sell Tempur-Pedic, Serta and Simmons mattresses, will have a 6,000-square-foot showroom. It will be similar to the Mattress Hub near Kellogg and Dugan.

“That’s probably it for Wichita,” Baty says.

That’s hardly it for the chain’s expansion elsewhere, though.

There are 21 Mattress Hub stores in Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. Baty says he and Barrientos are working on five more in the Kansas City area.

Baty says its their Wichita relationships that have enabled their expansion.

“We’ve got some great relationships,” he says.

For instance, he credits David Harris and RelianzBank for a “practically seamless” deal for the latest space.

Mattress Hub continues rapid expansion

WICHITA — Wichita-based Mattress Hub is continuing its aggressive expansion across the region with several new stores and several more in the works.

“It’s just because we’re crazy, I guess,” says Mark Barrientos, who is partners in the business with Ryan Baty.

Friday, they opened a new 7,000-square-foot store at 611 S. Dugan, which is what Barrientos calls Mattress Mile because of all the mattress competition along there.

“We had a great grand opening response,” he says.

Then it was on to Stillwater, Okla., where a Mattress Hub opened Tuesday.

Next is the Mattress Hub Clearance Center, which will open next month at the Plaza West shopping center at Central and West. That’s where Wal-Mart is building one of its Neighborhood Markets.

Barrientos says the 4,000-square-foot clearance center makes sense because of the company’s 12-month comfort guarantee, which allows customers to return mattresses for up to a year. The store mostly will be stocked with those returns.

In early July, Mattress Hubs will open in Dodge City and Topeka, which will make 14 stores for the 3½-year-old company.

“Yeah, it’s pretty good growth,” Barrientos says.

Mattress Hub expands at Towne East and Towne West

WICHITA — Mattress Hub is taking 18,000 square feet in Towne East Square where Steve & Barry’s used to be and opening what the owners believe will be the nation’s largest store devoted exclusively to mattresses.

“That will be our big papa,” says Ryan Baty, whose primary partner in the business is Mark Barrientos. “We’re really trying to set up a destination location.”

The Wichita-based company has locations in Salina, Hutchinson and Newton. At Towne West Square, a new 8,000-square-foot Mattress Hub opened two weeks ago. Previously, the store there was about 3,200 square feet.

Baty says the larger stores fit “right into our motto: ‘You want it, you got it.’ We really think we’ve hit on a niche.”
