Verizon Wireless to expand at NewMarket Square and Tallgrass Centre

WICHITA — Verizon Wireless is expanding two of its Wichita stores, which both happen to be at Slawson Cos. properties.

The chain has a new store under construction at NewMarket Square at 21st and Maize Road, where there has been an expansion boom of late.

“We’ve had a lot of stores over the last couple of years that have expanded,” says April Reed, who handled the Verizon deals.

That includes expansions by Maurices, Personally Yours, Hallmark and Starbucks.

“We’ve been on a roll in terms of tenants expanding,” Reed says.

Verizon currently has 2,500 square feet in the same building as Bella Luna Cafe. In the first quarter of 2014, it will be moving to 5,200 square feet and taking most of the University of Phoenix’s former space. That’s in the same building as Kay Jewelers and Scottrade.

“It’ll be an updated space,” Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Hill says of the store.

Reed says there are 1,400 square feet of the former university space left to lease.

At Slawson’s Tallgrass Centre development on the southwest corner of 21st and North Rock Road, Verizon is expanding as well.

Starbucks to expand at NewMarket Square

WICHITA — Starbucks is expanding its space at NewMarket Square at 21st and Maize Road.

No one with the company is sharing details, but April Reed of Slawson Cos. confirms it’s happening.

Starbucks, which has been at NewMarket since 2003, currently has 1,500 square feet. It’s expanding into the 1,475-square-foot space Cartridge World left last summer.

Slawson has done exterior work to get the new space ready for Starbucks.

“One of their concerns was that each of those storefronts had its own distinct look,” Reed says. “They wanted to make it look like it was one cohesive space.”

The coffee chain is now in the design and permitting phase.

“They’re shooting to open in May,” Reed says.

Hallmark expands at NewMarketSquare

WICHITA — Hallmark is expanding its presence at NewMarket Square.

In August, the chain will go from about 3,000 square feet to about 4,800 square feet.

“We’re very excited we’re going to be able to expand and grow this location,” says Cliff Sallee, a Hallmark district manager.

“We’re going to be able to get more product lines (and) more cards in the store.”

Sallee says the remodeling that will accompany the expansion will create Hallmark’s first advanced design in Wichita. It will feature maple trim, new fixtures and updated carpeting.

“It’s our very polished … store concept that we do,” he says.

Hallmark is taking the space Personally Yours will be vacating when it expands and moves across the parking lot this summer.

April Reed of Slawson Cos. handled both deals.

Sallee expects the expansion to take less than a month. The store may have to close for about a week during that time, but then it’s back to business.

“This has been a great market up here.”

Personally Yours to move, expand at NewMarket Square

WICHITA — When Have You Heard? last checked in with Personally Yours owner Linda Webb, she was making what she called “the big move” from 21st and Tyler to NewMarket Square at 21st and Maize Road.

More recently, Webb says she had to make a choice: Either expand the shop or retire.

“We are expanding,” she says.

Her store, which Webb describes as a ladies and babies gift boutique featuring custom embroidery, is jumping from 1,260 square feet to 2,300 square feet.

“We’re just moving across the parking lot,” Webb says.

She’s taking the former Wild at Heart space.

The move and expansion will allow more room for merchandise, including new product lines, and will make space for parties and seminars.

For instance, last year Webb says she had a seminar on decorating for the holidays with things already at your house. “We had a lot of fun with it, but we were just on top of each other.”

She had to turn down a local cookbook author who wanted to have a signing there.

“This way, we will have some room to do those,” Webb says of the new space.

Weekend update, Have You Heard? style

WICHITA — A few businesses that Have You Heard? previously reported on are in various stages of opening or reopening.

– The newly remodeled Toys “R” Us store at 8011 E. Kellogg is having a grand reopening this weekend as it debuts the new Babies “R” Us store at the same site.

“This store format provides an exceptional shopping convenience for time-strapped parents, who are shopping for children of various ages,” spokeswoman Katelyn DeRogatis said when first telling us the news in May.

– The official grand opening won’t be until the weekend of Sept. 11, but Personally Yours is opening today at NewMarket Square at 21st and Maize Road.

Previously, the shop was at 21st and Tyler.

Linda Webb’s boutique for women and babies specializes in personalization of gifts through embroidery.

Ron and Bonnie Fehr are opening the second Wichita PostNet on Sept. 1 at Auburn Pointe at 135th West and Maple.

Jim and Liz Anderson opened the first PostNet, a FedEx Office competitor, at the Village at Greenwich at 21st and Greenwich in late 2008.

–Finally, Jan Munroe and her sister-in-law, Jo Degner, have opened their Material Girls Quilt Shoppe in the Travel Air Building in Delano.

In addition to retail sales, Material Girls will offer classes.

Uptown Cheapskate to open next to sister store Kid to Kid on the west side

WICHITA — Sometimes being a cheapskate is a good thing.

Just ask Mollie Schell.

Schell owns Kid to Kid, a store near 21st and Tyler that carries “pretty much everything you need for a child.”

Now, she’s opening Kid to Kid’s sister store, Uptown Cheapskate, to cater to teens and young adults.

Both stores are franchises that sell used clothing and some new merchandise as well. Customers can trade their used clothing for cash or store credit.

Schell says she’s in the same situation as many of her Kid to Kid customers.

“My kids are outgrowing the store, quite frankly,” she says.

Kid to Kid is in 1,950 square feet at 2243 N. Tyler.

Uptown Cheapskate, which Schell hopes to open in September, will be in 4,290 square feet.

That includes the space Personally Yours is vacating when it moves to NewMarket Square.

It also includes the former Bamboo Stix space and the space where American General Financial Services was.

Caro Development owns the building, and Cristi Howell of J.P. Weigand & Sons was the leasing agent.

Personally Yours to move to NewMarket Square

WICHITA — Personally Yours, a gift store that specializes in custom embroidery, is moving from 21st and Tyler to 21st and Maize.

“We’re making the big move to NewMarket,” Linda Webb says of NewMarket Square.

Webb owns the shop with her husband, Michael.

“We have really enjoyed where we have been,” she says of 2243 N. Tyler.

There aren’t as many other retail outlets by her current store as her new space will have, though.

“We’ll have a better variety of traffic,” Webb says.

She’s moving into the 1,260 square feet that Chelmsford Tea & Gifts will be vacating late this month.
