Starbucks to expand at NewMarket Square

WICHITA — Starbucks is expanding its space at NewMarket Square at 21st and Maize Road.

No one with the company is sharing details, but April Reed of Slawson Cos. confirms it’s happening.

Starbucks, which has been at NewMarket since 2003, currently has 1,500 square feet. It’s expanding into the 1,475-square-foot space Cartridge World left last summer.

Slawson has done exterior work to get the new space ready for Starbucks.

“One of their concerns was that each of those storefronts had its own distinct look,” Reed says. “They wanted to make it look like it was one cohesive space.”

The coffee chain is now in the design and permitting phase.

“They’re shooting to open in May,” Reed says.

After more than two decades at Twin Lakes, Fashion Bug to leave by late January

WICHITA — After more than two decades at the Twin Lakes shopping center, Fashion Bug is preparing to close, though it’s not happening just yet.

“We don’t have a close date yet,” says store manager Lindsey Constable.

She says the store will continue to receive new items through the end of this month.

Sales of as much as 60 percent off are under way.

Constable says when Ascena Retail Group bought Charming Shoppes earlier this year, it decided to close the Fashion Bug chain.

Ascena also owns Maurices, Dress Barn and Justice, which are not going out of business.

Although Constable can’t say for certain when Fashion Bug will close, she says it won’t remain in business past the end of January.

Maurices to expand at NewMarket Square

WICHITA — Maurices is expanding at NewMarket Square.

“I know that they’ve wanted to expand for years, and we’ve just finally found an opportunity to do that,” says April Reed of Slawson Cos., the NewMarket developer.

The shop, which sells women’s clothing, accessories and shoes, currently is in 3,622 square feet between the former Borders store and Justice.

In July or August, Maurices will move to 6,000 square feet near Bed Bath & Beyond. Old Navy recently downsized, and Maurices will take its former space.

Reed, who handled the deal for the space, says Maurices is making the move in part to expand its plus-size offerings.
