Wasabi Restaurant to open on the west side

WICHITA — Wasabi owner Steve Young is preparing to open his third Wichita restaurant, this time on the west side.

Young is taking two spaces in the center at 2404 N. Maize Road near 21st and Maize Road for a total of 3,085 square feet.

That’s near Logan’s Roadhouse where Frozen in Time, a scrapbooking store, once was along with Peachwave Self Serve Frozen Yogurt, which recently closed.

Bree Kelley of J.P. Weigand & Sons and Don Piros of Landmark Commercial Real Estate handled the deal.

Young opened Old Town Sushi Bar By Wasabi on East Douglas in 2010 followed by Wasabi Restaurant at 3242 N. Rock Road last fall.

The new west-side restaurant, which also will be called Wasabi Restaurant, will be similar to the east-side one.

“Basically, he wants to do a little more upscale than downtown,” Kelley says of Young. “He’s going to have a nice bar in there.”

Young hopes to open in early December in time for the holiday season.

Kelley says Wasabi should be well received.

“I would think that the west-siders will be excited to have them in their neighborhood as an option to go to.”

Frozen in Time, A Scrapbook Boutique to close

WICHITA — Two years after opening Frozen in Time, A Scrapbook Boutique, owner Joni Berblinger Stolz is closing the shop at 2404 N. Maize Road.

She says she’s found that running a store in addition to already having a full-time job – she’s an engineer at Spirit AeroSystems – is too much.

“Sales were good, we had great customers. … It’s a great location,” Berblinger Stolz says. “I just couldn’t put into it what I needed.”

Berblinger Stolz also has a 12-year-old son. For the first year of her store, she says she missed too many of his sporting events. Then, she had others fill in for her at the shop. As the owner, though, Berblinger Stolz says she found customers expected to see her at the business.

May 27 is Frozen In Time’s last day in business.

Berblinger Stolz had a couple of people interested in buying the store, but it didn’t work out.

“I’d still consider it,” she says. “It’s a great shop. It’s a good deal for someone if they’re looking to get into that.”

Two more Peachwave Self Serve Frozen Yogurt stores coming to Wichita

WICHITA — At first we were kind of joking about the weekly yogurt report, but it looks like that’s the reality.

Yes, there are another couple of yogurt franchises coming to town.

Hong’s Landscape & Nursery owner Ilsik Hong and his brother, Jaesik, are opening a Peachwave Self Serve Frozen Yogurt at 2404 N. Maize Road.

That’s across from NewMarket Square in the same building where AT&T and Frozen In Time, A Scrapbook Boutique are.

“I happen to know the people who (are) distributing this yogurt franchise,” Ilsik Hong says.

His brother, who also works at the nursery, will own the yogurt business, but they’ll both operate it.

“He wants to have a side business, so I’m working with him,” Ilsik Hong says.

The nursery is on 31st Street South between Rock and Webb, which Hong says he realizes is a long way from the Peachwave that will be “way out west.”
