Cleats Sports Bar & Grill to open in former Shenanigans space

WICHITA — Evan Spicer and business partner Shaun Colliatie now have a name and an opening date for their new business going in the former Shenanigans space at Ninth and West streets.

Cleats Sports Bar & Grill will have a soft opening on Jan. 24.

“It’s what we’re shooting for at least,” Colliatie says.

The two are trying to create a sports bar atmosphere with seven TVs, two projectors, a couple of pool tables, dart boards and arcade games. They also want to be known for tasty, reasonably priced food, Colliatie says.

The business will be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. Colliatie says one of Cleats’ signature dishes will be gourmet, stuffed burgers. He says all of the meat the grill serves will be top grade. Fries will be cut fresh, he says.

Spicer formerly owned the Chalet, which he previously told Have You Heard? he never wanted to close “till the city shut me down” last year. He says there were zoning issues at the business even though he operated there for 13 years.

Spicer will manage Cleats, and Colliatie says he’ll be “doing a little of everything.”

Former Chalet owner to open new bar and grill at former Shenanigans space

WICHITA — Former Chalet owner Evan Spicer is working on a new bar and grill in the former Shenanigans space at Ninth and West streets.

“Hopefully we’re going to be opening within the next month or so,” he says. “We’re going to try to specialize in more of a gourmet hamburger place.”

Spicer never wanted to close the Chalet “till the city shut me down” earlier this year. He says there were zoning issues at the business even though he operated there for 13 years.

“For almost 13 years, I was there operating illegally, I guess,” he says, half laughing.

Spicer says he finally got permission to operate, but the city had so many stipulations, he decided not to.

There’s still no name for the new bar and grill, but for applications he’s made so far, Spicer has been calling it Weston 9.

“It’s kind of a play on the location.”

Wazabz Japanese steak house and sushi restaurant to open in former Sumo space

WICHITA — This must be the week for Japanese restaurant news.

In addition to Emperor’s Japanese Grill and Tsu Basa that will be opening on the east side, the Japanese steak house and sushi restaurant Wazabz will open in the former Sumo (which moved farther east) space at 3236 N. Rock Road.

That’s not to be confused with the new Wasabi Japanese Restaurant, which is opening in Old Town.

Wazabz owner Evan Spicer says the Wasabi owner let him know he didn’t care for his name choice, but Spicer isn’t changing it.

“It’s almost kind of like ‘hamburger,’ ” Spicer says. “How are you going to patent that?”

Spicer is an owner in the Chalet, a sports bar at 3030 Penstemon St., and a partner in numerous Sonics in Kansas.

He wanted to open a Japanese steak house for personal reasons.
