Broadway Burgers owner to open second restaurant with more to follow

WICHITA — Now apparently is such a good time in the burger business, Rick Laham is opening his second restaurant only months after opening his first.

In September, Laham opened Broadway Burgers at 2345 N. Broadway in what was once Liz’s Broadway Burgers.

“And now, thank God, you can hardly get in the place between 11 and 2,” he says.

This week — or next week at the latest — he’s opening a second Broadway Burgers at 1659 S. Broadway in a building that formerly was home to Dog-N-Shake and Dairy Queen.

“The secret is . . . you have to give a heck of a value today,” Laham says.
He has deals like a half-pound fresh hamburger with a Delano Bakery bun, fresh fries and a drink for $4.99.

“We’ve got some people come in for lunch and come back for dinner,” Laham says.

He also serves other dishes, such as chicken fried steak and chicken strips.

Laham plans more restaurants on the east and west sides of Wichita near where other restaurants have recently closed.

“All these other places were built on such a high overhead,” he says. “We aren’t in the fanciest places in town, but you’ll feel comfortable and good.”

Delano Bakery to sell to-go items at Dolci & Joes

WICHITA — Delano Bakery, which actually is at 1025 W. 29th Street instead of its original Delano space, is now going to have a presence in College Hill.

On Monday, the bakery will begin selling its products at Dolci & Joes at 3425 E. Douglas.

“It’s the face of the bakery,” Delano co-owner Brant Dumford says of using the restaurant as a retail outlet.

Delano Bakery already supplies a signature bread for the restaurant’s sandwiches.

“It only made sense to start some other joint projects together,” says Dolci & Joes owner Joshua Crowe.

Crowe says the first three months of Dolci & Joes have been fantastic.

“We’ve really appreciated the reception we’ve received.”

The restaurant’s bread will now be for sale along with other kinds of loaves and brownies and cookies.

College Hill residents have been hoping for a new grocery store to replace the former Dillons at Central and Oliver. That may not happen, but the next best thing could.

Owners of the more than 17-year-old Delano Bakery, which sells its bread at Dillons and to area restaurants, are eyeing the space for their first retail outlet.

Brant Dumford (pictured right), who owns the business with his father, Kelly (left), and brother, Cy (center), says the holdup is the landlord is worried how the bakery could affect Sugar Sisters Bakery & Cafe next door. delano

But Dumford says his business is strictly about making and selling bread while Sugar Sisters is a restaurant.

“We like to stay with the custom artisan specialty breads, and we don’t want to push anybody out of business anyway,” he says.
