Attitudes Dancewear, Etc. to move, expand within Carriage Parkway

WICHITA — Attitudes Dancewear, Etc. is expanding at Carriage Parkway, which is going to necessitate a move within the shopping center near Central and Edgemoor.

“We are busting at the seams,” says owner Beth Rea. “Dance has just gotten more and more popular.”

The store, which is in about 1,000 square feet, has been open near the middle of the center for eight years.

“It went really fast,” Rea says.

The new store, which will have about 2,400 square feet, with be on the southwest side of the center. It opens July 9.

“We’ll have a lot more visibility from Central,” Rea says.

Tony Utter of Utter Commercial Real Estate and Joey Ritchie of J.P. Weigand & Sons handled the deal.

The additional space will allow for new and expanded lines, Rea says.

“We’ll definitely carry more ballroom and other lines of dance(wear) that we currently have.”

She says eventually she’ll be able to add clothing for gymnastics and possibly cheerleading as well.

Rea says the dance business has been growing for the last decade.

“If that continues, I have bigger dreams for it, but we’ll just see how it goes.”

Peel’s Salon Services to expand at Carriage Parkway near Central and Edgemoor

WICHITA — Hutchinson-based Peel’s Salon Services was looking to expand its east-side location, and it didn’t have to look far.

Next month the business will move from 2,700 square feet at Carriage Parkway just east of Central and Edgemoor to a new 5,400-square-foot space at the center.

“It’s been an established location,” says president Bob Peel. “It’s been good for us.”

Peel’s is a wholesale beauty supply chain that serves salons in a 12-state area with 59 stores. The company adds about five stores a year.

Peel is the fourth generation of his family to run the 73-year-old company.

He likes the parking Carriage Parkway offers and access off of Central.

“We’ll be spending over a quarter million dollars on the remodel,” Peel says.

“It will become a center where our customers can get advanced education, and they can meet with our architects to redesign their salons.”

He’ll also be able to expand his merchandise line from 12,000 products to almost 15,000.

Tony Utter of Utter Commercial Real Estate handled the deal.

The store, which is not available to the public, will open in the new space on Sept. 15.

Uruku and Julie Balay part ways

WICHITA — More than 19 years after opening a salon near Central and Rock — and one year after partnering with UrukuJulie Balay is leaving.

“I’m going to give up my space,” she says of her salon, which is just north of the Shadow.

Balay is going to join Capelli Salon at Carriage Parkway.

In early 2009, Balay and Uruku owner Tracy Sprague partnered to form Uruku at Julie Balay Salon & Day Spa.

“With the economy and everything, it just made sense for us to join forces,” Balay says. “We were both just feeling a lot of stress, and it made a lot of sense for Tracy to move over here.”

It didn’t work out.

“We’re just very different in the way we operate a business,” Balay says.

“We had different visions for the direction of the salon,” Sprague says.

She’s changing the name to Uruku Hair Lounge.

Balay opens in her new space Tuesday.

“I’m going to be taking care of all my clients over there and looking forward to not having to operate a small business anymore.”
