KAKE, Channel 10, to drop its 4 p.m. news; KWCH, Channel 12, to add 4 p.m. newscast on sister station

UPDATED — KAKE, Channel 10, is dropping its 4 p.m. newscast, but marketing director Bryan Frye says that doesn’t mean the station is offering any less news.

“We’re still doing the same amount of news, just in different time periods,” he says.

There is no staffing reduction related to the change.

Frye says that in January, KAKE added a 4:30 a.m. newscast in anticipation of canceling the half-hour 4 p.m. newscast, which debuted in 2007.

“The problem was we never really had a good companion piece at 4:30,” Frye says.

He says viewers tuned in for the 4 p.m. newscast but then left at 4:30. The station tried several half-hour shows in that slot, but none was a good lead-in to the 5 p.m. news.

In September, KAKE will run the hour-long “Dr. Oz” at 4 p.m. He’s one of the syndicated “You Docs” The Eagle runs every Tuesday.

KAKE, Channel 10, to debut “This Week in Kansas,” a public affairs show

WICHITA — KAKE, Channel 10, is starting a new public affairs show that will look a lot like the one KPTS, Channel 8, just canceled.

This Week in Kansas” debuts at 9 a.m. Sunday with host Tim Brown, who has hosted “Kansas Week” on KPTS since 2006.

“They actually canceled ‘Kansas Week’ after 21 years,” says Brown, who also is director of development for Via Christi Foundation.

KPTS is going in a new direction. More on that in a minute.

KAKE marketing director Bryan Frye says he and his station have long been interested in having a public affairs show and have liked and admired Brown.

Like “Kansas Week,” “This Week in Kansas” will feature journalists in a roundtable discussion. The show also will include politicians and other newsmakers.

Brown says he’s grateful KAKE stepped in to start a program like this.

He says he told KPTS if it was canceling the show because of him, “By all means go ahead and fire me and keep the show alive.”

Sports director Alan Shope leaves KAKE, Channel 10, over contract dispute

alanWICHITA — Alan Shope is no longer sports director for KAKE, Channel 10.

“It was just a simple contract issue that we couldn’t work out,” says Shope, who had been at the station almost nine years.

Shope says the issue wasn’t monetary.

“I was not asking for money,” he says. “I’ve never asked for a raise at KAKE TV.”

Shope is a Wichita native who returned here to be closer to his father, George.

“KAKE’s a great place to work,” Shope says.

But with his father’s death last year, he says, “I really was looking to move on anyways.

“It’s not that big of an issue for me.”

He says he has interest from stations in Kansas City and St. Louis.

KAKE marketing director Bryan Frye won’t comment on Shope’s departure because he says it’s a personnel issue.

He says the station is looking for either a new sports director or reporter.

“At this point, we’re looking for the best person possible.”
