Wasabi Japanese Restaurant owner to open similar concept in former Bossa Grill space

WICHITA — Wasabi Japanese Restaurant owner Eun Young still has plans for an east-side restaurant, but they’ve changed slightly.

Young, whose first Wasabi is at 912 E. Douglas in Old Town, signed a deal this spring to open a similarly named restaurant in the 1,782-square-foot former Froz space at 3242 N. Rock.

After striking that deal with Occidental Management, Young learned of another nearby Occidental space that became available.

Now, he’s worked out a deal to take that 3,200-square-foot space where Bossa Grill used to be.

“He wanted the bigger space and obviously liked that it was already built out for a restaurant,” says Occidental president Chad Stafford.

He handled the lease with Occidental’s Bree Kelley.

Stafford also sold Young the restaurant equipment in the building.

Young is tweaking his Wasabi concept.

“I am going to try to be kind of a little bit . . . upscale,” he says.

The name will still be Wasabi, but it will be spelled differently. Young hasn’t decided how yet.

He likes the expanded space because it will allow him to do booths.

“I can make it more private.”

Young hopes to open in about two months.

Stafford is now working on finding a new tenant for the former Froz space.

“We’ve got several interested parties right now.”

Bossa Grill to close this weekend

WICHITA — Less than a year after opening, Bossa Grill is closing.

“Sometimes you need to know when you need to quit,” says co-owner Alberto Moreira.

He opened what he and a partner from his native Brazil hoped would be the first in a chain of restaurants at Northrock Retail Center at 3242 N. Rock Road.

“So many people like my food — like everything,” Moreira says.

But not enough.

Moreira says not enough people came through for a good return on investment.

“It’s better we decide to close.”

Leisa Lowry with J.P. Weigand & Sons is now working to sublease the space.

The Bossa concept may not be dead, though.

“We need to think about it,” Moreira says. “We need to learn about our mistakes.”

His partner is talking with someone in Miami about opening there, which Moreira says might make sense with the Latino community in that area.

Moreira says Saturday is Bossa’s last day in business here.

“Thank you (to) my customers.”

Bossa Grill Brazilian franchise to debut in Wichita

WICHITA — An international company with ties to a Brazilian restaurant group is bringing a new franchise concept to the United States and opening its first restaurant in Wichita this spring.

alberto“Wichita is a good lab,” says Alberto Moreira, who is bringing Bossa Grill to Northrock Retail Center at 3242 N. Rock Road.

Moreira points to Wichita as the successful home to franchises like Pizza Hut and White Castle.

“It’s a good test market for a restaurant.”

Moreira and Wichita business attorney Michael Biggs are partners in Bossa Group International with several Brazilians who are owners of TAC Comercio Alimenticio.

That company has 80 restaurants in Brazil, including the Bonaparte and Donatario concepts that are the inspiration for Bossa Grill.

“We’re taking what works in Brazil, and we’re adapting it for use . . . in American markets,” Biggs says.
