Big B’s Beef expands catering, changes hours

WICHITA — The “more convenient, centralized location” that Liz Bathgate said she was looking for when she moved her Big B’s Beef to Delano seems to be working out.

“It’s been great here,” she says. “We have wonderful neighbors.”

Bathgate and her husband, Brian, moved their restaurant from 4628 S. Seneca to 605 W. Douglas, next to Hatman Jack’s Wichita Hat Works, late last year.

Liz Bathgate says they’ve found Big B’s is more of a lunch destination in its new spot, so they’re changing its hours.

Monday through Wednesday, the restaurant will still be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Thursday through Saturday, hours will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“At 7 o’clock, it seems to slow down here in Delano,” Bathgate says.

With the new site, Big B’s now has catering, too.

“We’re just expanding our catering menu,” Bathgate says. “This is growing. More and more people are asking for it.”

The restaurant also is now delivering downtown. There’s not a set minimum order.

“We usually ask that it’s a few orders,” Bathgate says. “We’re not real picky on that.”

Big B’s Beef to move, double its size with new Delano space

WICHITA — Less than a year after opening, Liz and Brian Bathgate are moving and doubling the size of their Big B’s Beef restaurant.

“We wanted a more convenient, centralized location,” Liz Bathgate says.

The restaurant had been at 4628 S. Seneca.

“We were pretty far south,” Bathgate says.

The new restaurant will be at 605 W. Douglas next to Hatman Jack’s Wichita Hat Works in Delano.

“We’ve always loved the Delano area,” Bathgate says. “It’s such a pretty area. It reminds us a lot of growing up in the Chicago suburbs.”

The Bathgates move to Wichita from Chicago about five years ago.

Big B’s sells Chicago-style hot dogs, Italian beef and gyros. Those items will remain on the menu at the new place and be accompanied by more soups and salads.

The new restaurant will be 1,600 square feet, which will double the space the Bathgates have now.

Big B’s is closed until the new space is ready in mid November.

When it reopens, Bathgate says the restaurant will offer free delivery downtown, which is something it was too far away to do previously.

Still, she says business was great where it was.

“We’re still surprised at how busy it’s been,” Bathgate says. “We didn’t expect to be so busy.”

Big B’s Beef to open on South Seneca

WICHITA — Wichitans soon will have a taste of Chicago without having to make the trip.

Brian and Liz Bathgate are opening Big B’s Beef at 4628 S. Seneca to serve Chicago-style food, such as hot dogs and pizza puffs.

That’s the former Fire It Up Pit BBQ spot on Seneca just north of 47th Street.

The Bathgates moved here from Chicago four years ago and will order all their meat and bread from there.

“Our specialty will be Italian beef,” Liz Bathgate says. “It’s a finely paper thin roast beef sliced on a hearty Italian bun.”

Big B’s is named after a nickname of Brian Bathgate’s. Liz Bathgate says the restaurant is her husband’s dream.

It will seat about 45 and have a drive-through. There also will be delivery for local businesses.

Big B’s opens Jan. 7 and will be open daily for lunch and dinner except for Sundays, when it will be closed for private parties.
