Teppanyaki Grill Sushi Buffet to open on West Kellogg next to Best Buy

WICHITA — What likely is going to be the biggest restaurant in Wichita is going to open in January.

Teppanyaki Grill Sushi Buffet is going to open in 13,000 square feet at 6710 W. Kellogg next to Best Buy.

“We can hold about 400 people,” says project manager Ricky Cui.

He’s with Minneapolis-based Teppanyaki Grill Buffet, a company that has six buffet restaurants so far, including locations in Omaha, Neb., Sioux Falls, S.D., Chicago, Lawrence and two in the Minneapolis area.

Cui says the company is interested in Wichita due to its proximity to Lawrence.

He says the restaurant will have 12 buffet tables, each of which holds about 20 to 30 items.

The restaurant’s specialties are sushi and Japanese-style teppanyaki, but there are other kinds of Asian and American food available.

Cui says the chain is looking for a Kansas City location. He says if the Wichita restaurant does well, the company may consider a second location here as well.

Kay Jewelers to open at NewMarket Square

WICHITA — Every kiss begins at … NewMarket Square?

Some of them soon will, anyway.

Kay Jewelers, known for its “every kiss begins with Kay” tagline, is opening at the development at 21st and Maize.

The chain is taking 2,224 square feet where Meritrust Credit Union used to be. That’s the same building as Pei Wei.

April Reed of Slawson Cos., who handled the deal, says the store likely will open in early February – probably in time for Valentine’s Day.

“This is our first national jeweler,” Reed says.

A local jewelry store, Powell Jewelry, is in the same area. Reed says there isn’t a conflict.

“Historically jewelry stores have clustered in the mall,” she says. “People in that category cross-shop so much.”

There are Kay stores in Towne East Square and Towne West Square, but Reed says Kay has also been going into open-air retail centers such as NewMarket for years.

There’s only one other space left to lease in that part of the development. There’s 1,900 square feet available facing Best Buy in the same building as Doc Green’s.

The new Kay will face Maize Road. Reed says there’s only one NewMarket space left along Maize Road. It’s in the same building as Sport Clips Haircuts.

“That would fill up everything on Maize Road that Slawson owns.”

Athletic and Rehabilitation Center to open behind Best Buy near Kellogg and Dugan

WICHITA — Overland Park-based Athletic and Rehabilitation Center is opening its 11th center, this time in Wichita.

“Frankly, we should have had it opened a year ago, but we struggled to find talent,” says Brian Stewart, chief marketing and acquisition officer.

Stewart says employers, insurance companies, case management firms and physicians have been asking the company to come here.

“We are a healthy workforce company that does a lot of things related to injured workers,” he says. “We have been asked for the last couple of years to look at Wichita as a potential growth center.”

That includes physical and occupational therapy, work conditioning, functional testing, on-site services and wellness programming.

The company is taking 5,000 square feet in a new building at 6803 W. Taft, which is behind the Best Buy near Kellogg and Dugan.

Stewart expects to open in early January.

A Springfield, Mo., clinic opened in October. There are also seven of the clinics in the greater Kansas City area, one in St. Joseph, Mo., and one in Topeka.

The west-side Athletic and Rehabilitation Center isn’t likely to be the only one in Wichita, Stewart says.

“If the opportunity presents itself, we’d love to have two or three clinics.”

Stewart anticipates finding more space won’t be an issue.

“The real estate market down here is super aggressive,” he says. “There are a lot of people who are hungry to have business in Wichita.”

Lane Bryant is the latest retailer coming to NewMarket Square at 21st and Maize Road

WICHITA — Lane Bryant is the latest retail shop coming to the newest phase of NewMarket Square at 21st and Maize Road.

The store is one of several — Pier 1 Imports, Kirkland’s, Ulta Salon, Cosmetics & Fragrance, the Children’s Place, Rue 21 and Christopher & Banks — that will locate in the two buildings that form an L shape between Petco and Michaels.

That’s also near where the new Best Buy is at the Slawson Cos. property.

“We were talking to most of these tenants when we were dealing with Best Buy and Michaels,” says Slawson’s Jerry Jones. “Then we had the 2008 financial crisis that just put all these deals on the back burner.”

He and broker April Reed, who handled the Lane Bryant deal among others, kept talking to the companies.

Though the deals took longer to put together than planned, Jones says it’s still a win to get the businesses — especially without a full market recovery.

“We were able to do it in a time where it was challenging to put deals together,” he says.

Rue21 coming to Derby Marketplace

WICHITA — Rue21 is coming to Derby Marketplace at 71st South and Rock Road.

The clothing store, which targets younger males and females, will open in 4,500 square feet of the 7,500 square feet between Maurices and Dressbarn just south of Target.

Construction began Monday, and the store should open Oct. 28.

There will be more Marketplace news coming this fall.

“We do have a couple of different junior anchors that we’re getting extremely close with,” says developer Mark McPherson.

The stores, which could be anywhere from 15,000 square feet to 30,000 square feet, are similar in size to stores like Bed Bath & Beyond, T.J. Maxx and Best Buy — not that those are necessarily the stores that are coming.

Look for more information soon.

White Dress bridal boutique to open Monday

WICHITA — The new White Dress bridal boutique is going to open Monday at NewMarket Square at 21st and Maize.

As Have You Heard? reported in April, Kristi Mouser is opening the shop to sell wedding gowns, bridal accessories, mother-of-the-bride dresses, flower girl dresses, homecoming and prom dresses and special-occasion dresses.

Mouser says she has all the dresses in stock now and will offer a variety of styles and sizes.

White Dress is between Best Buy and Dustee’s Fashion Accessories.

The White Dress, a bridal boutique, will open at NewMarket Square in June

WICHITA — The area around the new Best Buy at NewMarket Square at 21st and Maize continues to fill up.

The White Dress, a bridal boutique, is going to open in June between Best Buy and Dustee’s Fashion Accessories.

Best Buy opens late this month. Dustee’s opened Thursday. The new Michaels craft store opened there Feb. 28.

“It really provides us with a lot of exposure right there,” owner Kristi Mouser says. “We are kind of a good match for the Dustee’s and Michaels clientele, too.”

April Reed of Slawson Cos. handled the deal for the 3,500-square-foot space.

Mouser has been planning the shop for three years with her mother, Debbie Mouser, who will be a manager in the store.

Best Buy will keep its current west Wichita store when the NewMarket Best Buy opens

WICHITA — When the new Best Buy opens at NewMarket Square April 24, the other west-side Best Buy at 6700 W. Kellogg will not close as some people thought it might.

“In no way is that store closing,” says Shawn Barlow, customer solutions manager. “We foresee (that) store still being very successful.”

Barlow says that store draws from Oklahoma and Dodge City.

“There’s a very reliable customer base that we’ll still serve on that side of town.”

The new store is 30,567 square feet and is the new model Best Buy is using.

The other Wichita Best Buys are more like 40,000 square feet.

“What we’re looking to do is serve just a portion of the community,” Barlow says.
