WICHITA — Baker’s Furniture and Carpet is expanding – both its square footage and what it sells – at Chisholm Trail Center-Outlet & Retail Shops in Newton.
The longtime Peabody business consolidated its Peabody and Park City stores in 28,000 square feet at Chisholm Trail in September 2009.
Now, it’s taking an extra 2,500 square feet and adding appliances.
“We’ve got such a positive response from the surrounding community, we gladly want to expand and give them more options,” says the store’s Tammy Pickens.
Baker’s, which started as a funeral home and casket maker in 1897, first began selling appliances in 1916.
It then stopped in 1975 to focus more attention on its carpet business.
Pickens says carpet’s popularity seems to come in waves.
“At that time, carpet sales were just booming,” she says. “You know, in the mid-’70s, everyone had to have that shag.”
The expansion should be complete by May.
