You don’t say

“Sentimentally, it just makes me feel better about it. I think it’s cool that people are wanting to put businesses down here still.”

Joni Green, who is closing her Elements Hair & Bodyshop after 14 years in Old Town but is pleased another salon (she can’t say which one yet) is taking her place at 211 N. Washington

ACI Design Studio to close

WICHITA — After not quite five years in business, ACI Design Studio is closing.

Former Abode Home manager Brent Dorrah had the idea for Abode Commercial Interiors and convinced Transitions Group owner Bill Jackson to start the company around the time Abode converted to an event center. The upscale furniture store is in Jackson’s Domestic Design Building at 1425 E. Douglas.

“The store’s been improving each year, and as a matter of fact, we’ve had our best year ever this year,” Dorrah says.

However, he says, “We’ve still struggled.”

Dorrah says it’s been a challenging period in the industry, and Internet sales are now more popular than ever.

“We’ve just struggled to kind of get towards profitability basically each year,” he says. “I don’t think there’s any one reason.”

Dorrah says “that’s the sad reason” behind the closure. There’s a happier reason, though.

Transitions Group also owns Furniture Options and ExecuStay.

“They’re doing extremely well,” Dorrah says. “They’re experiencing a lot of growth. … Fiscally, it makes more sense for us to focus our energies on those businesses.”

Swell Event Rental for sale

WICHITA — Tiffany Sporn has decided to try to sell her Swell Event Rental, which was known as Ray Party Rental until she changed the name last year.

“I kind of fell into this company by default,” says Sporn, who took over the business in 2009 after her father died.

Sporn was a hospice nurse before that, and she’s also a widowed mother of four.

“It’s just tough,” she says. “I’m really tired of trying to juggle it. It’s not my true passion and love.”

Sporn, who likely will return to nursing, says she has two potential buyers.

“We’ve got a pretty long history in the community and a nice, large client list that would be beneficial to anyone who purchased the business for sure,” she says.

The business is at 2033 E. Northern.

Sporn says she’s open to any buyer at this point even though there are already two potential ones.

“Absolutely, you bet. Until you have cash in hand, it’s still available.”

West-side Realty World Alliance to move

UPDATED — Realty World Alliance continues to grow, so owner Greg Fox is moving his west-side office to accommodate that.

“Frankly, I’m nearly doubling my space, so it’s giving us a lot more room to grow,” Fox says.

Currently, Realty World has 3,700 square feet at Northwest Centre at 13th and Tyler. It’s moving to 6,800 square feet at 6617 W. Central, which is a former Blockbuster site across from Two Brothers BBQ.

“We decided that we would rather have a stand-alone building,” Fox says. “People seem to find you a lot easier.”

Fox and Troy Farha and Nathan Farha of NAI Martens handled the deal for the lease.

The move should happen in early March. Fox thinks he’ll initially need about 4,000 square feet of the 6,800 square feet, and the rest will be room to grow.

“My business everywhere is growing,” he says. “I’m a blessed man.”
